I received the remapped ECU back from Noobtune today, great considering I only sent it on Monday. So that's a hike from 150 to 220bhp. A no brainer for £100.

I went straight out for a drive as soon as I had refitted it and the car behaves in much the same way as the manual. Mash the pedal and while it does go quickly, the box just kicks down and the car overall simply makes more noise. But stir the pedal at 1/3 throttle at optimum boost which appears to be between 2.5 and 3.5k and it delivers a real kick in the back. It only changes down 1 gear at this point, making use of torque and boost. The auto seems to really thrive on the extra torque. 

I had to go home when my petrol started running out!

Very pleased indeed.

I had a 150 bhp to 220bhp noobtune, it definitely makes for a nice drive for very little money!

Feels like it but it works well. It's always behaved like that though, even before the map.  In contrast the Jatco in the 75 is a lazy bastard and has to be poked with a big stick to change down from top if I want to quickly accelerate!

I think 440nm is the safe limit. Some remaps push to 480nm apparently.

Iirc they have this 6spd box with the petrols on the 9-3:

They are a bit recalcitrant aren't they?  Then when they finally wake up they dump two gears and leave you about 200rpm off the redline.  Or is that just mine?

This was a engine that came with a scrap Mk2 Golf I bought a while back for spares.

It came with three diesel engines,two 1.9 turbodiesel that were scrap unfortunately, and this 1.6 turbodiesel, even though it had been left outside I managed to turn it over with a prybar on the ring gear.

I stuck it in the shed and said I'll try and get it going someday.

A few weeks ago I decided to have a tinker with it,drained the lumpy oil and a few litres of water out of the sump.

Dropped the sump and the bottom end was surprisingly clean,the same under the rocker cover,was expecting it to be choked up with the black death.

The oil pump was seized from being filled with water as the oil filter housing was missing,but one from the 1.9 block wasn't and fitted a treat.

Next was to sort out an oil feed pipe to the turbo,the 1.9 oil filter housing won't bolt to the 1.6 block,so I tapped out a 1.8 petrol housing to fit the oil feed banjo bolt into it.

Next,the 1.6 turbo was seized solid,but the 1.9 wasn't,plus the exhaust I have wouldn't suit the 1.6 only the 1.9,so decided to see if I could bolt the 1.9 turbo and manifold to the 1.6 head.

It went straight on,but the oil return pipe was different.

Now,I could use the 1.6 oil return pipe on the 1.9 turbo. 

Had to remove a wee bit of material from the manifold to clear the pipe,but only a minimal amount. 

Lots of other small jobs were needed,such as swap over the clutch and pressure plate as the one on the 1.6 wouldn't suit my gearbox,checking the timing and just generally getting it ready to try and fire it up.

Today was the day.....Will it run or had I wasted a load of hours and effort on a no hoper piece of scrap??

Lots of tinkering,bleading,checking,bleading,twatting the lazy starter,bleading,heating the glow plugs,flattening the batteries later.......

The fucker only fired up!!

Didn't run it for too long as no water and an oil leak but it runs.

Chuffed.

Plan is to build it into an rough old Mk 2 GTI 3 door  shell I have knocking about.

I've been letting it do its own thing for so long that I can't remember! Like a grumpy co- worker, it's sometimes better just to work with them than against 😂

My 2011 107 had all new brake lines two years ago just before I bought it. Another common foible then.

Thanks,I really wasn't sure it would run.

It took ages to get it turning over freely with a ratchet on the crankshaft,but plenty of ATF down the bores got it turning smoothly,then I figured I had a chance.

Back in the early 60's there was a young boy, about 9 years old, and every time his parents pissed him off, by not letting him do what he wanted to do, he always said that he would run away and join the circus. Little did this young lad know, that 60 years later, as a pensioner, he would. Yes folks, I'VE JOINED THE CIRCUS. Well, I will actually join on the 29th of this month. 

This all came about because a mate from daarn saaf visited in his rig and then had brake probs. Took him to a RV specialist I know and arranged to get his rig towed over there. While he was there somebody turned up in a big RV with a traffic on the back. Had a chat with my mate and asked him if he wanted a job. Mate couldn't do it because of health reasons, but he got me a number which I rang a couple of weeks ago. Ivor the boss fella was away for 2 weeks and would give me a ring when he got back. Had almost forgotten about it to be honest, when he rang.

It's called Circus Vegas and I had the interview this morning at the NEC where Job entails mostly driving, crew minibus, small trucks with trailers, etc from one site to the next and also doing maintenance work when not. I think it's right up my street. Go all over the country, always got lekky and water on site and get paid. It just goes to show, you never know what's round the corner.

 I may have to do a circus shite thread. I'm thinking it might  be a first on the much venerated Autoshite, although I could be wrong. There are those on here who have done some odd stuff.

@puddlethumper congratulations on both the MoT and your new job! I did five seasons with a small family run circus touring the UK and absolutely loved it. If you start a circus shite thread I'll see if I can dig out some pics of the ERF rig I used to drive for them; the convoy also included a TK, D Series Ford, Leyland Road Runner and a Dodge.

New scan tool arrived today. Reads+clears codes and live data on pretty much all model cars and on all their modules. Found all the same errors on the A4 that my genuine VCDS did. 

Basically when we all got told that DIY'ers wouldn't be able to diagnose modern cars or even read+clear their error codes, these cheap diag tools makes that a fallacy. Just under £270 and it arrived next day from Amazon.

The DS150e knock offs that you can buy are okay but don't do modern stuff (basically around 2012 on aren't properly supported) nor Porsche. I had no way of scanning my Boxster and 2015 Civic. Even the Civic isn't exactly new now. 

Plus having something stand alone is waaaay less hassle than dragging a laptop out, that inevitably has a knackered battery, just to read+clear a code quickly.

More Saab weldage. This was the most complex bit (OSF wing/inner wing) where multiple panels meet, and there are curves and swage lines to deal with.

Luckily I made a template of the shape before it fell apart. Joggled and a return formed for the trim to grip onto

Then cut out the bottom of the wing including the lip it welds to as it was rotten, so had to form a new one, this looking from underneath

It may not be clear what I've done here but there's now another plate behind the inner wing repair so it's double skinned, this is actually to form the wheelarch lip but thought I might as well go right up to my cut

Typically as I was welding this I ran out of gas, just a small panel to make the rest of the lower wing and I'll be finished. Lip is there to weld this section to

Been reading through another early 20th century book on car mechanics I've bought. This one, which has a title that can roughly be translated to "The automobile, handbook for motorists, mechanics and repairmen" is excellent, with lots of advice regarding makeshift roadside repairs, which were often needed 100-odd years ago.

MoT on the MG is due beginning of next month, drove past the MoT place on my way home from work to pop in and see the chap who does them and asked how busy he was. Got a few spaces tomorrow was his reply, as he was backing a Rover 45 off his ramp.

So I foolishly booked it in tomorrow. It was pissing with rain which unveils issue one. The wiper linkeage balljoint has popped off, and only the drivers wiper works. That’s a fail.

Its somewhere behind that lot, but a temporary fix has clearly been rigged and failed before. It’s not my first rodeo with temporary fixes for broken wiper ball joints, so and elaborate system of zip ties later and my repair should hold for a couple of weeks so I can get the bits. To be honest as long as it holds through the MoT that’s fine with me! 

Next guaranteed fail is that the passenger door doesn’t operate from the inside, thankfully that’s just a case of fiddling with the handle and tightening everything up.

So that’s the two simple fails done, can’t see anything else obvious. Which means it’ll fail ok something major no doubt! It’s only done 1700 miles ish since the last mot… so hopefully it goes ok!

Just got back from the opticians, many pennies lighter, and have new specs on the way.  I'm a bit overdue because of *waves hands at world*.  Prescription hasn't changed much, but just enough to push me into needing varifocals.  Hope I get on okay with them, it'll be nice to not do the specs shuffle when I'm working on the car with instructions, or when I'm checking stuff in the supermarket.
