brownnova
So what to do with a car you’re trying to convince yourself you should sell… go to a meet for that car and then go for a drive through the Welsh hills of course. Having not actually given it a good run since October I thought the heavy rain last night will have washed most of the salt away, and I’ll make sure to power wash the underside too. So I taxed it and drove it about a bit. It’s a good fun thing, forgot how much. Not sure what I’ll do without an MX5… I’ve had one on the drive for nearly 8 years in total! Second thoughts on selling… definitely… After the MX5 meet I met my wife for a brief mooch round some antiques… these were my favourite antiques… Then it was time to do the bi-monthly cabinet reshuffle and move the cars about to put the Merc at the front so I can tax and use that now I have the logbook. Decided to put the Pontiac in the back as it’s the least likely to be used in the next few days. Also started the Nova again took 3 or 4 goes but went happily enough, it really is quite tappy though. But I can’t get it to move… might need to give it a tug with the Elgrand to free it off. Floatylight, gm, richardmorris and 9 others

wuvvum
Got the new in-tank fuel filter fitted to the Volvo this afternoon. It's definitely running better, but it's still not quite right. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and give the carbs a clean - that is going to have to wait until warmer weather though. Not much else done this weekend - the hub nut for the Mazda still hasn't shown up so I couldn't do that job. I spent a little while trying to work out whether there's an easy way to mount the replacement universal radiator fan I've bought for it, but I think I'm going to have to either buy or make some brackets as cable tying it directly to the radiator isn't going to be a long-term solution - it's surprisingly heavy. Once the Volvo had vacated the ramps I put the front of the Laguna up on them to see if I could find any sign of a boost leak. There's nothing obvious - most of the pipes are hard plastic or metal, there's only one short bit of rubber pipe on the intercooler outlet, and that looked OK as far as I can see. I'm not hugely bothered - the car is plenty quick enough as it is, even if it is probably not giving 100% of its potential performance. My bodge expert repair to the boost pipe seems to be holding together too. I've been running around in the car for the last week or so just to try it out - it's nice enough but it's very similar to the 75 in what it does (except the ride isn't as good but that might be because it's on 18s rather than the 16s of the Rover) so it might not be hanging around in the long term. Soundwave
Investigating why the Rover's driver side electric window has ceased functioning... happily turns out to be a broken connector inside the switch rather than anything awkward or expensive. Stripped the switch down, attempted a rather clumsy soldering repair... it sort of worked. Window now goes down when you press the switch down. And when you press the switch up it goes... down still. More investigation needed, or possibly just buy a replacement switch. Still, it's not an entirely failed venture - I restored 50% of the window's functionality... Jamie
So my wife has booked a car with Enterprise to go to London with work. She booked a D Auto which means Large car / automatic This is what they dropped off and posted the key for this morning Rang the branch and explained that a skoda fabia isn't a large car. This is only automatic we have in sir, Ah right well if I book a suite at a hotel and you've none left ill just take a standard room even though I've paid for a suite, no bother! Cunts. Also it's 3 years old says 'service now' on the dash and the key is loose as anything 😅 grogee and GrumpiusMaximus

Choose the smallest car they have, C1, Up etc but tick the box for ‘automatic’. They probably won’t have one and voila, free upgrade. You just have to be prepared for the 1 in 50 chance they do actually have one available and roll with the punches if that happens… Yank Tank, GrumpiusMaximus and richardmorris 2
High Jetter
Similar to my trick at airports - get off plane, wait for baggage, go for a coffee, THEN go to car hire desk. MJK 24
I hired a car in Faro about 7 or 8 years ago. I usually use Air Auto but they were fully booked so I ended up reluctantly using one of the big brands. I think it was Avis. Anyway, I saw they had Dacia Sandero’s on their fleet and was hopeful of getting one of those. I went to the desk and the girl got my paperwork. I looked down nosily and noted I had been allocated a Megane. Only when she saw I had my own insurance cover sorted, she excused herself and went into the back office with the paperwork. She came back a minute or so later and the Megane had changed to a Sandero!! They must have thought they were trying to punish me! Spurious
Currently renting a 2020 Three pot turbo Clio in Poland. It's excellent, drives well, interior is ace and it's very refined too. Looks smart too. You can only hear the engine if you thrash it, frequently driving about in 3rd gear at 3k rpm and I'm none the wiser as I cannot hear the engine. You actually need the rev counter to change gear as it's that well noise dampened. Big spread of torque. Gone are the days you'd thrash a 1l and only get more noise. Mrs Spurious is very enamoured and wants one. She's agreed to pay part for it as she's very frustrated at me turning up to pick her up in Shite. (Dont worry I won't get rid of it all the shite). N19
A few years ago I rented a van from a local firm. Not my usual go-to place, but this crowd were close to where I lived then, and I only needed it for a couple of days. When I arrived he took me out to the van, ordinary SWB transit, did the walk around, then tried to turn the ignition on. Nothing. Dead as a dodo. First offered to jump start it, then after protestations pointed to a medium wheelbase saying "I'll try that one instead". It started fine and I took it away. On my return a couple of days later he proceeded to ask me for an excess payment "because you got a bigger van than you'd paid for". Needless to say, I was not forthcoming. Oh, about 12 years ago I was with a friend who'd hired a Luton - the clutch was slipping wildly ("just rev the engine sir" went the rep). Protestations followed that we were about to fill the back with Stuff and then spend 5 days hurtling around various parts of the countryside, and that we didn't want to risk it giving out midway. "Well, it's not broken now sir so I can't replace it" goes the rep. Five minutes round the block later, and with an eye-watering smell of burning clutch, wouldn't you know but it's broken down and won't move at all (opposite a popular greasy spoon). The rep sighed heavily as he brought a replacement out (very quickly and from the yard, so it's not as if he didn't have one!) We have a Dacia Duster with that 1.0 three pot Turbo, even given the car's size, it's very quick. Excellent for motorway driving in our case. Our Sandero Stepway has the 90hp 0.9 TCe version which is also very quick. Honestly, I prefer my NA 1.2 3-pot Fabia, but only on flat or downhill stretches. AnnoyingPentium
Fabia did okay on it's first day of active duty (commuting). I don't want to speak to soon though, I've still got a lack of power (I know it was slow anyway) so I'm thinking that either it's time for cylinder 1 or 3's coilpack to have the screaming abdabs. I have a 1 litre 3cyl turbo in the new fiat. I don’t know if this is common to any others yet though. I’m happy with it - good range of torque and quiet and 50mpg. It does tell you on the display when it would like you to change up. But this is purely economic and not for performance, and you can get it to give up and stop telling you what to do if you are heavy footed.
