Guy said he has had bad fuel from the station I filled up at and had the car go into reduced power mode. That didn't flag any faults which was strange.

Maybe causing knock detection to strangle the performance and feel like a reduced power mode but not quite far enough to trigger a code?

When I bought the Merc I was told it had been bought from an insurance company as a cat S write off and that’s why the V5 was absent. It was probably a bit ill advised to continue with the purchase… but I took the gamble anyway.

Now some time later the V5 I applied for arrived…

That's my conclusion too, just surprised it didn't throw a code because it was way out of limits.

Excellent.

My previous Civic that was written off is a Cat N and doesn't show on the V5. Shows up on a HPI/similar check though.

1.8 EX Plus. No messing about here.

Wasn't actually fussy on spec, just wanted SE Plus or better Tourer and they're rare as anything. Just happened upon this one. Not a whole lot of difference from the SR. LED headlights (same as the Type-R), keyless start/stop/entry and adjustable bolsters are about the only things I can tell.

Would you recommend one? My accord has just failed needing a bit of welding, time to change i think. Can`t decide between this shape as a hatchback or spend more to get the tourer. Or spend even more more on the new shape with the 1.5t. I like Hondas

Excellent.

One of my Civics was like that - it'd been sandwiched in an accident and had repairs at both ends, to significant expense. Auto Trader claimed it was a Cat C but the V5 was clean.

Going to try avoiding writing an essay and keep to the point!

10th gen civic are, unsurprisingly, far better. My mate has a 1.5t with the CVT and it's a cracker. Bloody quick for what it is and responsive. Chain on the 1.5t, belt on the 1.0t. Size wise they are the same as an Accord, which is why they discontinued the Accord in the UK. I didn't get one as they are still expensive. My mate saw exact same spec and year as his, with more miles for the same price he paid for his 2 years ago.

9th gen Hatch Civic have a pretty decent boot still. Mrs SiC really wanted the estate which is why we got one. Her friend has one too and loves it. Tourers aren't necessarily any more expensive, just rare and so you'll need to do the miles to find one. We ended up doing over 800 miles in 2 days to find this as only 4 suitable (ULEZ/CAZ compliant) in the UK. Hatches in comparison are far more plentiful.

I'd love a 10th gen but I'd have had to spend an extra 50-100% more than already I have. This cost nearly 10 grand and to me that is a lot of money for a cooking model 6 to 7 year old car. Needs must but I have conceded that I will have lost 6-8k in the next 3-5 years. Newer will be loosing even more.

How tall are you? The 8th/9th gen had magic seats. Honda achieved this by putting the fuel tank under the front seats. This means leg room is compromised and you are sitting quite high up. 10th gen ditched this as Honda did the same civic world wide. The American market likes more room and biggest market, thus dictates that. My mate is well over 6ft and can easily fit in a 10th gen but no chance in a 8/9th gen. This may be a deciding factor for you.

Also most 10th gens have adaptive cruise. This was nearly a deciding factor in me getting one. Just budget overruled that.

I`m glad I`m not the only one that had this conundrum :)

Your car seems a nice example, they do seem rare. A local tourer at a delaer sold in couple of hours.

Its frustrating that had I bought a 9th gen 18months ago I would of been content spending maybe 7k. A 10th gen as you say is more, I havent yet driven one but the additional power would be useful.

Good point on the seating, i`m 5`10 so should be ok.

Mmm still a tough decision

Just hired a Nissan Leaf for a couple of hours,  just out of curiosity.. well?

Meh..

Started with 100% charge. Heater on as it was cold 142 miles.. dropped almost straight away to 124. Turned heating down but not off. Set at 21.  Did 61 miles and used exactly 50% charge. Loved the regen 1 pedal driving ,and the adaptive cruise was nice, but otherwise...not for me. I like to be warm..I spend enough of my life in the cold to worry about not being able to be comfortable,  this is a major deal breaker for me without anything else. It's actually  noisier than my Focus at 60mph too.

Jumped in my 8 year old Focus to drive home, and prefer it. I'll put off my future daily plans for a couple of years at least, especially as this is now the norm after changing the last nippy caliper.

Maybe these electric cars could have diesel powered heaters installed? You’d only need a small fuel tank and they don’t use much fuel at all.

Where was the car? Saw a few and put a (refundable) deposit on a few - so might be back up again!

Yes, this did hurt. With a dead car, I just had to get over the fact that second hand cars are so much more expensive at the moment. Was hoping I'd have got another year out of the A4 and when car prices hopefully start to become a bit more sensible again.

I'm 5ft10 and fit perfectly, even if a tad high with the seat on it lowest position.

You can tell them to heat up when on charge. So when you get into it, it'll be nice toasty warm and ready to go.

Thinking about buying a cortina estate, I was picking up a spare wheel for my 504 from a local 504 owner and he had a bunch of other cars hanging around including a Granada estate, Amazon estate, MK2 Capri and a couple of 504 pickups.

He mentioned having a cortina he was thinking about selling and I had a quick look. I like the look of it so thinking I should sell the Estelle and buy it.

Was overnight in a sort of boutique hotel with a guest having particular taste in motors too….

Looked to be in daily driver sort of condition, and still with its original plates, or very good replicas….

The eagle eyed will see I also got a parking ticket on my travels, but not at the hotel.

It was in Henley in Arden in the midlands. Just checked and its still gone.

I`ll have to try both generations out, if they don`t get sold before I get there that is. I reckon a fair few ex Honda accord tourer owners are snatching the civic tourers up. Nevermind eh :)

Peugeot did that with the electric version of the 106.  Had a petrol fired heater with a 5 litre tank.  Worked really well too, got furnace levels of hot way quicker than the standard car's one and didn't hurt the already limited range.

You could get one in a Trabant too, but I believe they could be a bit  ,erm, temperamental...

Spent all day looking at potential cars for my parents after selling their 2008 Audi A3 last night to a dodgy trader.

Their criteria for a car was something small, basic, petrol, 5 doors and cheap to run. I went to look at a K11 Micra this morning, then a 1998 Toyota Starlet but didn't buy them.

I felt like I had seen everything gumtree and marketplace had to offer when this slightly older A3 Quattro turned up 5 minutes walk from their house. I had a go in it and it seemed to drive fine so just bought it.

My Mrs seemed to like it so has taken ownership and lent my parents her Camry until they can find something suitable.

Been tidying the garage the last few days. It's got to the point where there is enough clutter that it was even annoying me. Still a long way to go and I could really do with another roller cab to have more places to put stuff away.

It's also given me a chance to fix my welding cart finally. The lighter hobbyweld cylinders were fine but when I put one of the heavy BOC cylinders on the back, it broke the carts back.

It's been like that for over two years now.

To try sorting this, I welded on some large triangle braces.

Also gave a good chance to practice my welding again. I leave it too long and loose the knack a bit. You can probably tell which was the first one I did and the second where I cranked up the power and wire feed.

Doesn't matter so much though after attacking it with the grinder.

Once the lick of paint dries eventually dries in this cold weather, I'll see if it takes the weight of the cylinder this time.

Did manage to snag my thumb on the wire wheel. Went straight through the glove without slowing down. Fuck knows how I didn't do more damage. One day there is a good chance I'll end up needing hospital treatment after being in my garage.

Get some cut resistant gloves. They do work, about 10-12 years ago when I was young and stupid, I'd been using Father's rat tail grinder with a flap disc one handed and it hopped about and "brushed" off my gloves. No injuries.

I didn't realise such gloves existed. Usually I wear welding gauntlets and they work pretty well against rotating grinders, but are clumsy. Hence wearing these thinner PU gloves. Usually I wear vinyl, PU and then welding gauntlets. The vinyl gloves do keep moisture in though and messes up my skin.

Looking at Screwfix, the cut resistant gloves look similar to the PU gloves I was wearing but with that cut resistant (Kevlar?) feature in. Not as cheap as the ones I wear but if it stops a serious accident, they'll pay for themselves.

Had the 'rona a week now. I am feeling better but still have dizyness and a cough like Val Kilmer in tombstone. Surprised how much of my spare tyre has gone in just a week.

Spent some of the week looking at used cars on tinterweb - prices truly are depressing for mainstream stuff - given that £6k+ is being asked for a ten year old mondeo £12k for a 500 hp Jag XFR seems better value for money.
