Anyone know much about these Image 1 of 16

Common fail point's around the 1.6 petrol etc.   Looking quite likely the K11 is on it's last MOT if it gets one this January, and these keep coming on my shortlist to replace it.

It's a late '90s Toyota, it doesn't have failure points.

They are fairly bullet proof. The garage I used to work at sold literally dozens in eight years, and I can't remember having to do any ball joints. The bushes in the radius arms at the back can go. The VVti can use oil, but goes on like that for years. Two of the gearbox bearings can go, but the noise they make makes it very obvious, and they can be changed with the box in situ by someone with the right bearing pullers.

I can't think of any other faults I've seen more than once. They are quite lively, with even the 1.4 having 97hp compared with 75 for the equivalent Golf.

Since this is a facelift version does it have the 3ZZ-FE engine that is known for oil consumption? I had a 2000 Avensis with this engine and it used 1 liter of oil per 1000km.

That's my Mondeo failed in two weeks if I forget to get the one of rear plate lights sorted. I've only just noticed it's out.

Nope - again, the Mondeo your Mrs now owns had a number plate light out on the last-but-one MOT - if you check the history you'll see it was a minor and thus not a fail.

I've just re read the manual and I think I'm wrong here. Been a few years since I've tested.. I'm way behind. 😔 used to be a fail, before all this major/minor stuff...

They can use oil, but it gets to that sort of level and doesn't get too much worse. It doesn't seem to make them smoke, either. One customer did come back and complain, so we changed the oil for some sort of GTX10/40 for high mileage engines and apparently that improved the situation.

Yes, so was the Avensis i had and had been like that for years. I have also had a 1998 Avensis with the old 1.6 that had over 300,000 km on it and it did not use any oil so I prefer the older engines and would rather choose a car with them.

Mechanically indestructible as others have said. Check rear end of sills since its easy to do, keep changing the oil and filters and drive forever. 40mpg should be achievable relatively easily. Please tidy those front hubcaps with a thorough clean, gentle sand and some hubcap paint. Its even a facelift model so has improved* face. I think @dozeydustman was giving away some service bits as his one - the only one in recorded history - went a bit wrong after racking up 113 billion miles and was not economical to repair.

To be honest, aside from checking for the usual signs of major issues that can affect any car, rust is the only thing I'd be really going into looking at one expecting to be a possible issue.

We sold quite a few of these at the garage and never had a bit of trouble with any of them.  Solid, dependable workhorses, if deathly dull.  Seriously, they made the Hyundai Lantra courtesy car we had feel exciting, and I hated that thing.

Granted, partly because they replaced the Proton with it without asking me if I wanted to buy it before they sold it off...which I took as something of an insult as they all knew I liked the Proton!

Ive now given up hope with the garage that has got my Audi. That's been 3 weeks and they've just fobbed me off. Why they just dont tell me they are too busy or aren't interested I don't know. I'm a polite and reasonable man.

I put a post up on the Audi 80 pages saying I might be breaking it and I think I got about 10 messages asking to buy it whole for £5-£600.

I realised that the headlights are worth a lot of money as are a lot of the other parts that are specific to final edition models so they are all clearly wanting to make a fast buck out of me.

There is a used stainless system for sale for £350 but that's just too close to the price of a new one for me.

I'll get it back and decide then. The same thing happened with the Cavalier and I felt differently once it was on the drive.

Mondeos always used to fail because one of the 3 taillight bulbs were out. Still winds me up when I see a mk3 like this..

Yes its 50% of the rear position lights on each side need to be working.

Ford were trolling the UK by putting three in rather than two or four, like some other German manufacturers.

Mine are mk4s, I haven't bothered to count the bulbs yet.

Edit: by the looks of it its three per side...

Our was just shy of 200k when it developed the ability to squirt oil and coolant everywhere. Until then was 100% reliable and lasted my wife’s side of the family 19 years with little more than routine servicing and consumables. Ended up with crankcase compression and a handful of oil seals gave out.

I have some parts going for £cheap but they’re for a pre-facelift 1.3 with the 4E engine. Some I have put by for another shiter and will eventually get round to posting them!

There's a guy that's been on a train since 8am on his way to collect it.

Gone - chap had come from Thornaby. Knocked me down a little bit on price but I'm happy, and that was a very easy sale.

£350 plus fitting to get it back on the road isn't a huge sum. Especially if the owner of the system would have some flexibility on price

Major news in the Greengartside fleet.

FATHA has since disposed of the troublesome Skoda Octavia and has bought this fine machine..

A 2006 Renault Modus 1.6i Initiale in Ron Atkinson Gold with nearly a full year’s ticket and a stack of receipts for everything, right down to a wiper blade. All OAP owners before my dad and it is clear to see it was cherished in the past. It was advertised on facefart marketplace for a few weeks and there were no takers. It was only ten minutes in the car so on my week off I decided to go and have a look. A test drive was done and money exchanged hands. Bizarrely, the front coil spring broke as I moved it off the guy’s driveway. He offered to fix it at no cost to me so I didn’t chip him down on the price as it seemed fair and it was a genuine stroke of bad luck. A thoroughly decent chap who was into his cars too. Anyway, I picked it up Thursday morning. No pez station shot as there was half a tank of fuel in it already.

FULL LEVVER INTERIA. Made from real French cows, dontchaknow.

Even the quirky little ‘boot chute’ works!

However, there were a couple of three bits that needed sorting. Firstly the front towing eye cover needed replacing as it had broken tabs.

Luckily, my local scrappers has a Modus in exactly the same colour so I managed to salvage the cover and replaced it.

This Modus also helped donate a few other parts too.

I didn’t realise that it was missing the rubber lip that goes across the top of the bonnet/bumper. The donor car came up trumps here again. Evidence this hasn’t been cleaned under here in a while.

Sorted, much better. It’ll also stop the water running down the inside of the bonnet etc.

I also disconnected the rear parking sensors as they were constantly bleeping whenever reverse gear was selected.

GINUWINE RENNO SENSRS, too. It’s only a temporary fix and I will look into getting it sorted.

I also found an original dealer sticker out of a scrapped Renault so I put it back in it’s correct place. Originally sold at Mitchell’s of Lowestoft, it then went to Hornchurch in Essex, then Clacton and amazingly back to Norfolk in a little village near Norwich, and we bought it from there.

And for some bizarre reason, the aerial whip was spray painted silver! I assume that was because of the OAP owner’s difficulty in locating their car and that was done to make it stand out? A quick splash of satin black and lacquer brought it back to standard.

As it is the Initiale model, it should have Xenon headlamps but there is a receipt from 2017 stating that they were replaced for standard units because of a fault in the system somewhere. A great shame and it will be something I will try and get sorted. As a consequence, the Xenon’s operated with an automatic headlamp leveller of some sort - basically there was no internal adjuster fitted. Again, the scrap Modus came to the rescue and I managed to retrofit a headlamp adjuster and this now works.

Dad paid £750 for it, which I think is worth every single penny. It drives absolutely brilliant and I am seriously impressed with it - one of the best cars he’s purchased in a long time. I’m on the hunt for a set of genuine mats for it so if anyone has some I’d be very grateful. Next big job will be to replace the timing belt and dephaser pulleys.

VERDICT: SOLID GOLD SHITE.

That looks a fantastic little thing.  I'm not sure I'd want to go to the hassle of refitting Xenon headlights mind - every car I've owned with HID lights they've been completely shit.

Cheers Wuv, yeah I’m sure they were replaced for a reason. I don’t think dad’s too fussed either - I’ve done the hard bit of putting the adjuster in so at least it’s MOT-acceptable.
