Picked up a cheap banger today. With the Bini clutch nearly had it, Boxster going off for roof repairs and the BGT having its misbehaving streak, I needed something. Simply no time to sort the Bini, BGT I'm not allowed to commute in and the Boxster disappearing for a few weeks. Had a look last night and found this at a bomb site style dealer.

Cheap because p/x, ABS light is on and dodgy paintwork repairs. Clutch does seem on the high side. Clean tidy, plenty of tyre tread and pads. Drove straight and true, if a bit gutless. Few slight knocks over bumps maybe. Cheap enough though that if it lasts 2 weeks and scrapped, it was cheaper than a car rental. But a bit too good for that though.

Paint work has got some comedic rattle can spray repairs. Bet the paint underneath is in better shape that this repair.

Google says abs light is caused often by dodgy fuses. Strip fuses that live on top of the battery

Took a bit of poking to realise there is an additional section here

Fuses all good though. Bugger

Quick check of interior fuses spotted one missing where there are electrical contacts. Could be it be?

Found a 5A blade fuse in my stash.

Started up and ... Result!

Quick scan showed a few intermittent codes. Cleared and I'll see if they come back.

Air filter looks brand new.

Engine oil is at minimum and the engine is a bit rattly. Not sure TADIS. I'll probably get some cheap oil and filter to bung on.

PAS is there and clean.

Possibly could do with a top up though.

Service history is just the book. No record of cambelt.

However it looks like someone has been here before in its 15 year history. Belt doesn't look too bad either.

Throttle body was filthy.

Gave it a quick clean out. Accelerates much smoother now, especially letting off the throttle.

Washer fluid container appears to leak though. Guessing it'll be a bumper off job to replace.

For some reason i can't tax my new Mondeo online, I've been trying repeatedly but it's saying my green slip number is not valid, yet I just received a little letter warning me to tax the car or Sorn it or else.

What gives?

whats the date of the last V5c issued according to the DVLA checker online?

if it does not match with the date on your green slip then im afraid that the number wont work

(the string of numbers on the green slip is just an extension of the 11 digit V5 number and that changes every time a new V5c is issued)

but before all that make sure the number your giving it is 12 digits long! if its only 11 digits long then you may only have the main reference number, but just add 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 etc to 9 to the start until it works if thats the case

Drop the first digit? @LightBulbFun is your expert.

thats for when you need to pretend to be the previous keeper, to do a keeper change online or such :)

I mean you could tax it like that, but then it would be taxed in the previous keepers name LOL

As shit as it is, it actually isn't too bad a car. VAG do really know how to make a interior feel alright and drive acceptably. As I someone said to me, Porridge is good for you.

The MG6 is in for it's 2nd mot in my ownership tomorrow, so I thought I'd best check it over... Really not liking the look of that rust on the subframe or the filler pipes. It's not structural as far as I can tell, so fingers crossed for a pass and then I'll spend some time cleaning and rustproofing.

Hopefully it's not going to be a problem anyway- the rear subframe is completely NLA on one of these.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for that?

In other news;

Sue is still down at Mark's garage waiting for parts, so it looks like I'm stuck with Boris for another few days. You know, I don't mind a courtesy car once in a while as long as it's half decent, but Boz is seriously shite.

And I still can't get on with all this naming your fucking cars idiocy.

I have to admit that those exhaust tips that aren't actually even an exhaust tip are one of those things that really big the heck out of me on some cars.  Especially when it's absolutely blatantly obviously fake - yes Ford and Peugeot I'm looking at you two in particular.

Just...why?!?  It's one of those things which I just cannot fathom why somebody decided it was a good solution to some problem.

Those Fabias are pretty decent at being "an car" though, if just soul destroyingly boring.

That paintwork is something else though... that's up there without the brush painted "repair" on my first Saab someone had used red telephone box paint for...

Well done that man! Make sure you set your alarm Sunday night.

I wake up at 8 every morning anyway, I'll be setting it a bit earlier because sign on for training is 8:45. Once the 2 weeks training is done I won't start until 11am!

This is the advert for Fabio the Fabia:

Knocked 50 quid off that 🤣

Cartakeback say 223 collected too.

I think I might attack it with some paint thinners and see if I can remove some of it. I wonder if it's either lacquer peel or a scrape. Probably started doing it and then they carried on. Only realised how bad once it dried. Mrs SiC grandad did similar with his Astra - he was well chuffed with the result and thought no one would notice. Part of the reason we got him off the road 😆

I call it my little shitbox now and to be honest I actually (shamefully) say I quite like it. Perhaps it's so worthless and the fact you need to ring it's neck to get anywhere. Both things that sometimes endears me to a car. Give it a few weeks when the honeymoon period wears off it may be different.

I might attack that wonky fake exhaust tip with an angle grinder though. Presumably it exists to make the young buyers think it's sporty and cool?

ALL the manufacturers do it now. Even a 300bhp Golf R. See which tips are dirty when you see one next.

Woo, fucking Hoo!

Phone call tonight - Suzy is done & dusted. I'm taking Boris back in the morning for the big swap-over.

Anyone want pictures?

I managed to Sorn my new Mondeo, it was a less than 2 second job at the post office.  Still no idea why the online service wasn't working for my car.

Still awaiting the V5, I guess there turmoil in Abertawe!

So I need the move the Passat on to a new home ideally on or just after the end of the month.

Did an oil change on the Shitbox Fabia yesterday evening.

VAG have this weird thing where they put the air filter into the engine cover. Which this cover is just push fitted onto the engine

Sucked the oil out for convenience.

Oil filter is in a ridiculous place on this car. To the right of the alternator, right next to the manifold. Had to wait till the engine cooled down before I could get my hand down there.

Oil filters have a hex socket on the end. Thought it was weird but made sense once trying to get the damn thing out.

Naturally I got engine oil everywhere trying to remove it. Stinks now as the mancat gets hot and burns it off.

Pollen filter is filthy. Will need to get another. Fiver from GSF.

Offside droplink is buggered too. Boot split and loads of play. Explains the noise going over bumps. £11 Drivetech cheap or £14 "GSF Premium".

Radio surround was blutack on. Basically whoever fitted it didn't put the cage through the inner surround first. Just put on top with blutack and then the outer cage radio surround was too far out to clip on.

Pulled it all out and fitted it properly. Including pushing in the retaining tabs as best as I could. Which was also not done.

Also disabled that really annoying beep on ignition off that Sony Head Units do to remind you to remove the faceplate. Irritatingly it forgets all it's settings when you disconnect the power.

Swap the yellow and red leads on the harness behind, the positive and switched lives are reversed on VAG shite.
