Olly the orange car needs new boots. I thought I'd buy another set of winter tyres to stop me bogging down occasionally on the odd camping field. There is no choice left anymore! Places like tyreleader have some Hankook iCept's in 185X14 with a gorgeous tread pattern, but they're away on the continent & are likely to drop off my tyres with a huge extra bill. Where do folk buy their's from now Britain has become global?

They say all taxes are included in the £ amount. They are probably like AutoDoc where they are a VAT registered EU company and the customer doesn't pay anything on arrival.

well, we have had a 50% success with the Toyota's brakes.

Captains side, no bother at all, calliper off, worn pads out and all back together.

Drinkers side, not so good..... some loon has been in there at some point and rounded off the bolts holding the calliper to the carrier.

great.

so, kerry put the wheel back on, and we'll get George in town to look at it as he will have the tools and knowledge to be able to get it apart.

and the issue with the brakes is i think that the drinkers side is seized and not working correctly, so it'll most likely end up getting either new sliders or a new calliper.

don't you just love old cars.

I simply can not get fuel.

Well, if you'd filled half a dozen jerry cans like the smart* people you'd be fine.

It is actually a cruel irony that the fuck nuggets hoarding fuel are now the people who actually have some and the people filling up as normal are now fucked.

A collection retrospective. I didn't really plan to document this, so not many pictures I'm afraid.

On Monday evening last week I drank quite a few cans and browsed Gumtree in a slightly inebriated state. I spied a cheap, but oh so very crusty car in the place what cars go to rust, Inverness. A message was deployed and on Tuesday morning the chap called back and offered to hold onto the car until Friday and even knocked £100 off the already reasonable asking price. A deal was made.

A collection plan was hatched for early Friday morning.

Leg one got underway at 6:20am and was completed by glamorous red Saab convertible courtesy of @SRi05 - Top man.

I was accompanied on the trip by @davidfowler2000 and as a perk of his employ, he bagged me a £6 train fare. We met at Glasgow Queen Street for the 0700 Inverness Service.

IMG20211001064316.thumb.jpg.f679c163f845ef97bde52703f0ee2034.jpg\

Disappointingly this service was being operated by a Class 170 DMU, not an HST as we'd hoped. Furthering the disappointment, there was no trolley service on board.

NO LOITERING, by order.

We arrived in Inverness and spied our first scrap of the trip, a Volvo 940 estate, also a remarkably rust free 02 plate Pisshat. We were met by the seller at the station who kindly gave us a lift out to his house about a mile away.

Monies were exchanged and the crispy car collected.  On the road to the petrol station we spied an Austin Maxi (!!!). We sloshed in some fuel at Tesco and got a quick bite to eat.

IMG20211001112256.thumb.jpg.49fa2bd6603a555d87b7892f913d4764.jpg

A real 40 footer this one, but oh so very cheap and with plenty good bits to plunder. It is really incredibly crusty and the exhaust is bursted to all fuck, but engine and box seem bob on, there are some natty seats and some other good bits.

IMG20211001124029.thumb.jpg.14ab6f5c80d78b0bb02f3036c74388f5.jpg

We took the back road down towards Fort Augustus which was entertaining. Here is the MX-5 with Fowler having a pish in the background.

Fort William was achieved and a pub lunch taken. The Fort as fucking dismal as always.

IMG20211001135556.thumb.jpg.902d01523e4fa7ec2af1db8831c10f02.jpg

Despite the gloomy skies we managed to keep the roof down from Fort William to Ardlui. The road home was a real rich seam of scrap. We spied @Tommyboy12 and @sharley17194 heading North on their heroic trip. Scrap count that we can remember;

02 plate Passat estate NOT ROTTEN IN INVERNESS!!!
Austin Maxi
Montego Estate
Citroen AX
2 x Citroen Xsaras and a third on 4 axle stands
Triumph TR6
Vauxhall (Carlton we think) Hearse "decorated" for some gumball rally that's going on up there this week
DeLorean
Reliant Fox camper (pictures earlier)
E reg Ducato camper
Smiley Transit Camper
Volvo 940 Estate
MG B GT
Saab 900 Convertible

Home was achieved almost exactly 12 hours from initial departure;

what on earth are those wheels off ? they look enormous :)

a blast through the highlands in a Mazda is always a treat, well bought, sir.

what are your plans for it ? a wee trip out to knockhill, by any chance ?

Drove the Disco home 1.5hrs yesterday and didn’t feel dizzy. Drove the 335D for 2 mins last night and felt dizzy. Drove it again today and just carried on, did about 70 miles in it today and no longer feel dizzy…

Honestly no idea, the mrs was fine so clearly no fumes or anything like that. I honestly think it’s something to do with the motion of an auto and the fact I’ve barely driven it in the last couple of weeks.

Thankfully it’s passed now!

I'm not actually sure. I've not looked at it since Friday but I'll check what size they are.

I hope so! I think my initial plans are to have a quick gander at just how rotten it is underneath and like you say give it a last hurrah at Knockhill. It's tested until December anyway.

I seem to be broken. Last couple of days whenever I drive I go very, very dizzy and it lasts for an hour or two after I’m out of the car too.

No idea why it’s happening and it’s pissing me off.

I get like that from time to time and have been diagnosed with BPPV - benign positional paroxysmal vertigo. If I look at a certain angle my eyes flicker very rapidly (nystagmus)

If any of this is familiar Please get checked before you have a crash.

New car boughted!

No collection, the AS fairy, namely a Welsh shitter from over in the North West came and delivered it.

yes, we now have two Mondeos, I'm asking what my life has come to to end up with his'n'hers Mondeo mk4s.

However, being the 2.0 TDCi when the dpf, dmf, injectors and boost control work they are really quite good.

The B5.5 Passat the new Mondstrosity is intending to replace its going to be hard to give up, it will be missed, but I got offered a deal I could barely turn down so the Passat will find a loving home elsewhere.

The forward acceleration feels lazy but competent as compared to the pisshat, which is remapped to some crazy power and response at low revs. However the Mondeo brakes better, drives the twisties very very well and the seats are comfortable, which is becoming important for me more and more.

And it's bigger, Mini CF the elder can do forward rolls in the boot.

I'm told the DMF was recently replaced so if I were to get it remapped...

No, I'll see if I can forget the Pisshat's brutal acceleration and how much fun that is.

Just had my class 2 breakdown recovery interview. Seemed to go well.

I need to sit down and fully understand the money as the basic hourly rate is terrible but it’s then built up with driving time, call out charges, out of area charges, complex recovery charges etc. He said the long and short of it is the minimum any of their drivers earn is 27k which although is poor for HGV, it’s still a few grand more than I earn now and for a brand new driver it’s at least a foot into the industry.

Should hear in a couple of days if I’ve been successful.

its happened a few times over the last few years , it sort of restricts my use of ladders and going to high places .

have discussed this issue with Dr's but it has got now where since the covid/cancer issues over the last year , they have rotated my head , scanned it , poked it and not had a clue whats happening in it ..  and sent me on my way ..

It’s normally caused by a small amount of the liquid in the inner ear forming a crystal and interfering with the tiny hairs on the inside of the balance loops (labyrinth). Video below explains it. Quite often the result of an inner or middle ear infection.

For me, looking up and to the left gives me the wobbles, worse if I’m dehydrated or I move my head sharply. Everyone is different and if it’s persistent you will need to see your GP and declare to DVLA. Sometimes just the epley manoeuvre once will stop if for years between attack.

EDIT: the manoeuvre may make you nauseous or chunder (if really bad)

Car shuffling, I want to get the 145 into the garage before winter sets in, unfortunately this means evicting the Visa and leaving it out in the elements. I haven’t really made much progress on either this year, not as much as I’d like anyway. The Volvo is a really tight squeeze in the garage and it’s pretty hard work getting it in and out without damage, the idea of using it as a summer daily and garaging it overnight sounds like just too much work, I’m pretty bummed out by it all and I’m wondering again why I restrict my life so much with these crunchy old motors. The Visa still has a mystery fault meaning it doesn’t run and some pretty large welding bills are looming for the Volvo, although the steering and brakes are now sorted.

I’m sure it’s all feels very familiar for many shiters here.

Indeed.  I have three cars which really should be spending the winter under cover (Renault 6, Innocenti, Volvo 164) and only one garage.  I might have to step up the efforts to sell the 164 - I may even brave eBay.  I'm beginning to regret selling the Ducato van so hastily as the Innocenti would have fitted in the back of that and the VED on the van was a lot less than the rent on a second garage (assuming I can even find one).
