A contractor's van went up in flames this morning and this is what's left. Props to the local (volunteer) fire service for putting it out this quickly.

*I forgot to add the doors were open and there was a puddle of melted tools and boxes. Father and I wonder if one of those tools' batteries went up.

Out of idle curiousity

Out of idle curiousity I'd probably plug it into my old Linux box to see what's on it. Disconnect it from the web.

Cant see it doing any harm* if you load it through the terminal with minimal services loaded.

*maybe not.

Its our neighbour's Hyundai firmware card for their I30 sent to the wrong house.

It's worth a few hundred quid apparently!

Now safely next door.

Just as well you didn't just format and use it! I had a big sample of dog food delivered recently, to an unknown person, at one of my business addresses. The recipients phone number was on the label, no response to calls or voicemail. Rang the company, got through on 4th or 5th time, they said they'd investigate, never heard anything. Gave it to a staff member. (Yes, she has a dog!)

A dog's dinner.

That happened once when I was a student, looking after a relative's house. One day a box containing four bottles of very fine champagne turned up. The address was correct, but the recipient's name was completely unknown to me....

I did 275 miles in the Swift today - more than it's done in total over the last 3 years.  It drove absolutely fine, was comfortable enough (although the ride is harsh on bad surfaces) and appears to have done about 49mpg.  It sits quite happily at dual carriageway speeds and keeps up with traffic pretty well for what it is, although it's a bit* slower than @davidfowler2000's (rather wonderful) Volvo V70.

Apart from the fact that I'd drive any car if I was given it, a 68 plate A class Mercedes is my idea of ultimate polished turd on wheels.

Apologies if any of you have one.

I’ll be honest... it’s a very nice car! The interior especially is very well thought out. I was impressed.

There’s a photo of me and my two brothers about 9 years ago in front of my old Porsche 924. My mum wanted to recreate said photo 9 years on, but in front of the Mercedes... I remarked that surely it would be more amusing to do it in front of the Pontiac (same colour, marks an amusing journey from sports car to people carrier) but she was insistent on the modern car!

Subtle digs... all about the subtle digs!

Wish I’d come to the FoD instead....

Aye, made an arse of the petrol situation and had to divert, then got caught in fog. Car went really well though and the initial rage has calmed at home...

Went to a classic car meet earlier. Turned out to be absolutely packed. Unfortunately starting to turn away some nice cars. Shame as it was supposed to be a pre 90s meet but there was a lot of modern cars (think brand new X5,etc) cluttering the car park.

Did you head back up the A1? The North bound traffic was something else,It must have been 15 miles of tailbacks from Newcastle up,I'm glad I wasn't stuck in it . As we where driving back south.

It was a Peugeot (obviously) 208, I think. How do you balance it if there's no hole in the middle? Does anything else have wheels like this?

Yes. My Peugeot 407:

20210405_110053.thumb.jpg.cd9154d8b111a1908c2d3801596f22f0.jpg

Some of the other alloys I've seen for the 407 do have a centre cap but some particular alloys don't.

Funny, I was just changing the oil on my own Felicia today and the filler cap looks like this.

IMG_20210530_104240.thumb.jpg.47eb5b6ec5b72a6e2a8acee8110b0822.jpg

But mine is the VW engine and it always looks like this, often worse and there is condensation steaming out of the exhaust for ages. I often watch Mrs Yoss reverse into the drive and think that really shouldn't be doing that. In winter it's obviously worse.

Trouble is most journeys are no more than five miles so it never clears. I've checked it after long journeys and it's always clean. I don't know why it produces so much condensation, is it just mine or is it a general VAG thing? I don't get it with the Favorit or Triumph.

I spent about two years worrying that the head gasket was going but I've had it 9 years now and it never gets any better or worse so I've stopped worrying. I still take it for a long run before the MOT though just to stop the steam coming out the exhaust.

It's typical of that generation of small VW OHC engines, and not helped by the poor design of the crankcase breather system.

You're absolutely right not to worry about it.

Balancing machines have adapters to fit these sort of wheels, Citroen, Renault 5-stud old Beetles etc.

As long as the adapter locates the wheel in the same way the car does there is no problem as long as the tyre-fitter can be bothered to find the correct adapter.

Drove past this yesterday afternoon in Tunbridge Wells while out delivering and did wonder what happened.
Also drove past a few prime specimens of chod in Groombridge as well as a few steam/traction engines.
