Can't you hoist them up and sling them from the rafters ?

No rafters ?  Useless idea.

Appreciate there's the question section, but here's one that's been bugging me:  You know if something like a Mk2 Escort/FS1E/other sought after vehicle comes on eBay with a 99p start, how come within minutes/hours it's been bid up to a daft amount? You don't get it with 'normal' motors and I don't get why people just don't wait until the end and then bid.

Auction fever? People really thinking they can win £15,000's of car for £279?

I have always found getting a decent oil level reading on my 2400 I/E Pallas is a problem, I have done it several times and get a wildly different result each time.

Et tu, Brute? Et tu?

The reading has to be taken only when stone cold, that's for certain. But here I am pouring the oil in, with nil result. Where's it all going? Is it yet another leak?

Got the steering rack boot changed on the 45 today.  Wasn't too bad of a job - nothing was seized, even the ball joint came undone without me having to hold it in place.  Most difficult bit was getting the big end of the boot over the rack and then getting the cable tie on - it can't really be done from the side of the car as the inner wing is in the way, so you have to go in via the engine bay, but the rack is right down the back of the engine with lots of pipes and shiz in the way.

Going to nip outside again in a bit now it's dark and tweak the headlight aim.  I have no idea whether my local garage will still be open for retests tomorrow - I'll give them a bell first thing and find out.  If not then at least it's done for whenever things start to reopen again.

Got one of the rear shocks changed on the volvo. Wasnt very difficult. The old shock was completly gone no pressure at all in it and wet with oil/fluid.

The other shock seems ok but i will change during week. No great urgency on this now as retest has been cancelled as test centres here are now closed.

Are you parked over a drain and have you lost the sump plug?

No drain beneath the car. Sump plug doesn't appear to be missing. If it was, there would have been a pool underneath the car when I collected it after the oil was changed.

Just kicked off in the street at 2am. All the neighbours are out screaming and shouting at each other. Heard one say "keep your distance". At least they can argue responsibly.

Also a little update, one of the neighbours came out and started giving people a bit of hand sanitizer out of a small bottle.

Basically a young lad was visiting his girlfriend (unsafe) and had an argument, then he went in another neighbours house(unsafe), then it all calmed down after 20 mins and they all lived happily ever after*

*Well for about two weeks until they die in agony as their lungs pack in caused by covid 19.

I wish I was making this up.

After a properly shit week, something happened last night that almost made me smile....

I’d been over to my dads 30 miles away to drop him a couple of bags of shopping off and was heading back through Burnley, about 19.00, so all the supermarkets etc were closed and the roads were deserted.

A girl in a Bini was at the side of the road and a policeman was talking to her through the window...I assume they were stopping people and checking their reasons for being out. As I drove past, he looked at me then got back into his car and started to follow.
At this point, I was waiting for the blue lights as I approached the junction in front of me about to turn left. As I was slowing, the lights changed to green and I went to turn just as 2 young girls in a little supermini thing coming the opposite way thought they could cut across in front of me.

I slammed on and held my hands up to them as if to say WTF? They started gesticulating angrily until the passenger spotted the police car right up my arse.

Sure enough, I set off and the police car waved them through before they lit up and pulled them over behind me.

Small things etc but I’ll take what I can get at the minute.

Got the news today that I'm being furloughed on full pay (a far better situation than is the case for a lot of people, and for that I'm thankful to my firm's parent company) for at least three weeks from next Monday, due to the ongoing crisis.

Until then, I'm going to keep on trucking!

I'm now thinking of what I jobs I could/should do on the cars, weather permitting. The Volvo could do with a few things doing to it, such as fixing the some of the advisories from its last MOT.  I have most of the replacement parts already in stock, so I'll probably have a spannering session at some point. It could also do with an ATF change (I like to do it every two years, and it's an easy enough job), but to do that I'll need to source some suitable fluid (D2 or D2 compatible) next time I'm anywhere near a car parts shop on the way home from work which is still open...

I have lost my valve grinding twiddle stick.  This is a bit of a nuisance since I've got everything else together to crack on with the valve replacement but without the stick, there's not much point.  I know as soon as I get a replacement the one that's hiding will appear.

Christ, staying at home with not a lot to do (even obeying the 1 hour max walking exercise) makes me do some strange things... Posting on here for one, instead of the usual shiteperving.

Cleared out the garage yesterday, will make my fortune in a clear out sale of crap when we are safe.

Replaced 6 litres of transmission fluid in the Ovlov, not a bad job.... No pics as needed to get it done before it rained.

Be safe out there children.

Push a short length of plastic tubing over the valve stem, and then put the stem in a battery drill chuck.  You can now wind the valve back and forth without wearing your hands out, and as long as you regularly re-distribute the grinding paste, can get a very good grind like this.  I've done it several times, and despite nay-sayers on t'internet saying it won't work, I find it does and if anything gives a better finish than I can achieve with a constantly-falling-off-mini-toilet-plunger.

Use a drill to hold the other end and lap it in like that? Don't forget to change direction periodically to maintain the grindiness.

I put together a nice toolkit for the car today to help keep my towns delivery (and non delivery) cyclists on the go.

Anything that I appear to have missed was likely in my emergency kit anyway.

It all fits quite snugly. I think I might screw a spanner rack onto the lower hatch so I don't need to go rummaging for a 15mm every time I want to take my bike in and out. And given the last bike I had in here had 3 different sizes of axle nut, probably for the best anyway.

There's one on the way in to my local Sainsburys that flashes the registration up on a screen next to the speed hump. I've no idea why but it resolutely refuses to acknowledge the cracked old dealer plate on the front of the Volvo. Day or night, the screen just stays blank. My other half (not a Simpsons fan) found it hilarious* when I'd always say "It's a ghost car" in a poor Chief Wiggum impersonation.
