That is a risky thing to say to a man with an everlasting supply of rusty cars!

What car is that crusty A-pillar affixed?

That's a git of a job that repair...one well known to anyone who's owned a Classic 900 I think.  Really nicely done!

Thanks!!

This full rear quarter I replaced on a Ford Falcon earlier this year was harder. Took me hours of fettling, set up and getting it clean and straight before I cut it welded anything.  I TIG’ed it all too ?

Just replaced The Volvo's engine oil (20w50 from Euro Car Parts) and filter (genuine Volvo from eBay), a job which took me all of 20 minutes due to having done it so many times over the past 16 years. If I recall correctly, it took me nearly two hours to do the job for the first time in 2004...

Ordered some new wires and plugs and a tin of red spray lacquer.

Unfortunately the site only had 4 plugs and all others are trying to sell the same plugs for over 4x the price.

I'll wait for the lawn mower supply place to restock their plugs and order some more. It's nice when your car takes the same plugs as a tractor, that immediately subjects them to I'M NOT PAYING THAT MUCH I'M A FARMER pricing.

Hopefully I'll be able to make a little progress soon but I need new tires for the daily. Best quote yesterday was $870 for 4 fitted and balanced. I think I'll go with that. Just in time to be working from home for 3 weeks.

Brakes for the Chieftain are $28 a wheel with $15 core return to be re-lined, so I'm going to take that option and the wheel cylinders are $32 a corner. Flexible pipes are $18 each made to the correct length.

Sounds cheap until you multiply it all by 4 but that's the way it goes. I think I may be ordering some parts to finish off one radio that's on my bench too.

Currently in a static "hurry up and wait" mode which is annoying. It'll end, the question is when. If it does soon, the car will be on the road for summer.

406 tinkering today.  Application of snake oil first off.

20200313_214258.thumb.jpg.d84cfa24fd36a0cec680b0598c4242c9.jpg

Then an oil and air filter change.

20200314_125348.thumb.jpg.1c62b8aaa94bf79b5ae45e8acd776cec.jpg

I also tried to cure the idling rough until fully warm issue by fitting the recommended fix of a BMW E46 fuel filter, thus bypassing the plastic filter housing that can let in air due to hairline cracks.

20200314_134254.thumb.jpg.904ff472711b0755cba8374355426c4c.jpg

Plumbed in easily enough after this pic, but it made no difference so I just changed the OE one instead.  The old one in there was incorrect I think, being shorter than the housing.

That's me out of ideas, so I'll just continue running it until it becomes undriveable, or I get bored and buy something else.  But I've done 4,000 miles in it since November and it keeps being a good distance car.  50mpg on a run with an 80 litre tank is handy...last trip was Pembrokeshire a couple of weeks ago, 600 odd miles in three days.  Here it is at St Brides Bay.

The rear NS brakes started to make a noise soon after I took this.  Dousing the caliper in WD40 cured* it, but I suppose that's next on the list together with curing the thudding noise from the rear (might be droplinks).

Might have to get myself a set of those, especially if she'd make a few in green.

I remember when Saddam waltzed into Kuwait - 4 star went up to £1.90 a gallon. Thankfully somebody drove into the back of our royale and wrote it off.

With a little time to spare this morning, I went over to FATHA_ GG’s and did a bit more work on Dudley.

I had bought some cheapie cutting compound, some polish and spray wax from the local garden centre the other weekend so thought it’d be an idea to use them on the car to see what they would do. I also took along a clay bar and a few other bits from my stash.

I clay barred the car, this is just from the front drivers wing....yeesh....

Clay bar all done, and cutting compound, wax and polish applied resulted in this...

All that is left is to give the interior a bit more of a clean, there are a few mouldy bits in there and also to remove a bit more pet hair. I found a pet hair remover brush in a car in the scrapyard so I’ll give that a try. I need to change the oil and then book it in for an MOT test with my mate. Then if it passes it will be up for sale.

Oh, and the sunroof seems watertight so I really don’t understand why it was sealed up in the first place. I did notice the passenger side windows misted up when the roof was sprayed with water so I’m at a loss on that one. Still, looks good, eh?

Have a sideways random picture, because Micra.

I am at a car gathering at Towcester, I am not sure I would recommend it as it is very wet!

Balls...I forgot that was on today.  Last one I had to depart from virtually as soon as I arrived as I got a phone call telling me the roof was blowing off the shed!

Only 20 cars instead of the 100+ of last time and I am not sure you really missed out unless you like driving in the rain!

Started tidying the garage a bit as I'm planning on getting the Triumph out at the weekend. I opened the bonnet to see a little face looking at me. He then jumped out and managed to run along the door to the boot.

IMG_20200302_165111.thumb.jpg.bf5da5bc8429d531e810d9fead55c786.jpg

As I get to the back he runs back to the front.

IMG_20200302_164958.thumb.jpg.d873e933bf5d0485b94771f0a7ef9d57.jpg

And then back again.

IMG_20200302_165055.thumb.jpg.4bf4872e0121765d69d13b225125c0dc.jpg

Then he comes round the drivers side and of course I'd left the window open so he jumps straight in the car. Bugger. Though it seems he's been in before as a polystyrene cup I'd left under the back seat had been nibbled away at.

IMG_20200302_171609.thumb.jpg.9252a84c2c02291d73e03ac2990e4fab.jpg

But he's obviously been living in the bulkhead which is not good. I keep a couple of rags in there for cleaning the dipstick and general wiping of oil and these had been chewed into little bits with lots of leaves added for extra comfort. This is after I'd removed most of it.

IMG_20200302_165734.thumb.jpg.441cf259db2807d5ad6a75d4e30e2f16.jpg

I always leave the bonnet popped as if I don't use it for a few weeks (and it hasn't been out since before Christmas) it helps to prime the fuel pump before starting. So that little gap and this bit of nibbling of the seal that runs round the scuttle...

IMG_20200302_171712.thumb.jpg.7ac8a1167376f0b42407cba893dcbac8.jpg

... was enough to get in.

I knew I had a guest in the garage because the bird seed I keep in there had been got at and all the sunflower seeds had been removed and taken to a different part of the garage to be opened. I wouldn't mind if he stayed in the garage and there are plenty of nooks and crannys he could make himself at home in but moving into the car itself is not good. You hear about them chewing wiring. Fortunately it all still works at the mo but I have now ordered some of these.

Screenshot_20200302_184637_com.android.chrome.thumb.jpg.b42ece9ac0ed43de3aa7ddc724af3f01.jpg

And my job for the weekend is to get the Triumph out properly, take the seats out and give it a damn good hoovering.

Mousey update.

So the above humane mouse traps arrived the other day. As you can see one end has a little compartment in to which you put mousey foods, I used a few broken up peanuts.

IMG_20200315_085908.thumb.jpg.4a4a2130cb413691e1c6708b42295226.jpg

This drops into position at the rear. The front has a spring loaded door which is set off by a sort of springboard in the middle.

IMG_20200315_085936.thumb.jpg.4df0fd3e84bad246f5a3825c7785c853.jpg

So I half filled the compartment with the broken up nuts, then put a few loose ones inside the main body and a few just outside to entice him in the right direction.

I came back the next day to find this.

IMG_20200315_090017.thumb.jpg.55239eb885497ca331af498d9c47b3cf.jpg

Definite signs of activity but no mouse. Why is that?

IMG_20200315_090025.thumb.jpg.7e0a43b5942d621c6fd16dd70b8f8bb3.jpg

Yes, he's just eaten his way out! Look...

IMG_20200315_090037.thumb.jpg.61fabf102dfda24fe94320ca7607b7fb.jpg

And with my finger to give sense of scale. He is very small.

IMG_20200315_090056.thumb.jpg.e9b383515206172f6031927ef34e35fc.jpg

But it gets better. That was all yesterday morning but I forgot to take pictures. Yesterday whilst there was no mouse there were still plenty of broken nuts about the place. This morning I went back to take pics for this report and the rest of the nuts had gone. Including the ones inside the trap itself. So not only has he escaped he's gone back in through his hole to go back for the nuts he left behind. I can't compete with that, mousey wins, the garage is his.

Of course as I said before I don't mind him being in the garage, I just don't want him in the car. So as my friend pointed out I should probably just leave him food in a corner of the garage then he won't need to go looking in the car.

We've caught eight using those traps, two were dead in the traps, caused by stress I guess. All were bigger than yours so maybe they couldn't turn around to chew their way out or they didn't have time.
