The new news 24 thread

I've moved a few cars around outside skattrd_acres so I can clear some of the weeds away and create a little more parking space.

The P38  has been run around the yard, it seems to run ok, so that is going to head off for MOT and fixage soon. Worst case scenario, it needs a new gearbox, but I'm feeling optimistic.
Both Aerodecks have been started and moved, the blue/grey one was missing most of its coolant, so I've refilled that and it seems to be ok, I can't see where the coolant went either and it doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere obvious. I'll keep an eye on it.  I might even stick that in for MOT and use it a little this summer.

The red e36 tds has now had new brake pipes done by the garage and a few other minor bits, I reckon I'll take the P38 up there and swap it for the e36, leaving them to hopefully fix the Rangey.

Spoke with the Mrs last night. As I have paid more than 50% of our Dacia Duster I will be looking to hand it back.

Plan is to get her a runaround sub £500 mean time then when things improve, get an older BINI.

The monthly finance payment on the Duster is better in my pocket than Dacia's.

They’re useful things to be fair. Been fighting the urge to buy a brand new one.

I’m considering selling the Golf, really like the car but just not feeling it unless the roofs down and suns up...which is rather rare just now.

Also not helping I've found something local  for sale (has been for a while) that ticks a lot of my boxes...only down side is the silly high road tax!

Away min. The sun does not need to be out to put the top down, just needs to be dry. I put the top down on the Audi at any opportunity!

Took me a minute to work out who this was!

The MR2 has no soft top fitted as the one off it went onto the black car, this means we have the choice of the hardtop or no roof at all.
I've done the no roof at all thing once so far and got caught in torrential rain in traffic on the way home. Great* fun.

Well that is true, but it’s just not the same and novelty wears off quick. Although now the roof works by its self going up and back down now it’s a lot less hassle to do so!

Still, I’ve had fun and memories with it but time to move it on. :)

Anybody know where one might acquire a Phase 1 Renault 19 windscreen? My mate had his cracked by a stone from a passing car and can't source a replacement...

From what I can tell the phase 1 and phase 2 had slightly different screens?

Why would I buy a car with a 200-300 mile range, which would take well over an hour to charge so I can continue my journey.

When I can have a car, which can do 350+ per tank of fuel, which can be replenished in a matter of minutes at a service station?

Range of electric vehicles is also affected by lights and auxiliary devices which also reduce range.Nah I pass on electric for the time being

I played hooky from work today and went down to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. #FOS (as they kept telling people on the tannoy). It was hot, but not horrendously busy, although I expect there are going to be a lot of very sore red people tonight. Knowing that I’d be like a cooked lobster in an hour I decided on chinos, a white linen long sleeved shirt and a Panama hat. I thus fitted in with the landed money lot, rather than the  car manufacturers t shirts and trainers lot. Although it did mean I was asked things like- would you like to try our hand picked champagne?

it has grown massively since I last went about ten years ago. The first few years there was no area to sell kit cars,, chattels and yachts!

A total freebie as I was sent a ticket for doing the x1/9 inspection a week ago. There was no way it also turned out that I was paying £18 for a brochure! Or £6.50 for a bacon butty, although I did succumb to the need for an ice cream at the very top of the climb for £3.

i know you’re not interested in photos of the flash cars and I didn’t take any either.  Fastest up the drive was a Renault Clio!  Also in the rally area, paddy hopkirk’s monte winning mini, a rally Mercedes 190 and a couple of Peugeots including a flatbed!

One new windscreen fitted today! However the guy noticed a scratch on it. After he'd fitted it, cleaned it and was taking the after video that they do and caught it in the light

IMG_20190704_131139.thumb.jpg.249cb9357a76de5277bc05b40359d681.jpg

He did ask if I wanted to do a claim and get a new one, but it's on the passenger side, barely noticeable from inside and frankly I don't really care, its better than a smashed windscreen! It's filthy now anyway as the washer jets don't really work on the drivers side! He noted it down on the job sheet so if it does happen to crack from it in 6 months it'll be an easy job.

He did however love the zx! Said he was thinking the other day it's been years since he's seen one and here one is. Was over the moon to not have rain sensors, heat sensors, cameras and other shit to remove (his words) and afterwards told me the tale of how back in the day AX rear screens were incredibly common to change, as some plastic clip let's go and sends the/one of the struts through the glass. They had the change down to half an hour in the end, but had to strap the glass to the frame for 12 hours whilst the adhesive set or it would pop out again...

Was a thoroughly nice guy. I did then think of knocking my insurance back down the 3rd party right afterwards, but it's just my luck it'll fuck me over one way or another, so I'll wait and pay a month of £70 before doing it...

The AX  rear hatch had a plastic bottom half with the lock mechanism held in place with insert moulded "bolts"

Due to the vibration of the diesel, the bolts ripped themselves out of the plastic.  I fixed mine by drilling 2 holes straight through and putting coach bolts through.

The hatch also vibrated sideways, and would rub the paint off the corners where it vibrated against the bumper.  Ie shite.

That might be what he means, there was something about a 50p clip from Citroen that fixed it, they just used to order 50 at a time... He spoke very softly, with a heavy cockney accent and my hearing is shit at the best of times. I was just happy to chat about old cars, i ran through my history with him and he seemed very impressed with it all.
