In 2003 I got royally fucked about by the DVLA when getting my licence back after losing it for medical reasons. I still get angry thinking about it and a couple of years later someone sent them a letter bomb through the post, I can't say I was surprised someone might do that as they appear to no clue how much people value their licence....

It wasn't helped when a locum doctor at the surgery I am registered at sent off a letter last to them saying god knows what to them. This doctor hadn't even called me in to examine me etc, whereas my 'normal' doctor cleared me to drive in late 2017.

 

I did send in a formal complaint to them because the website tells you to send in one thing, but they also expect another form with it. Paperwork was being to'd and fro'd for months because they don't tell you what you need.

 

I'm very surprised they don't get more threats of the illegal kind as when some people snap they can't be reasoned with.

Bit of maserati fettling done this morning, 2 of the courtisy lights didn't work when you opened the doors, managed to source 2 new lamps for £20, fitted today, still didn't work, usual issue, cleaned earth's up now bright red lights when doors opened.

Also need to fit front discs and pads to thema but one minute it's glorious sunshine, next it's pissing it down. Job for next week I think

have picked up the black mini from George's in Malton.

 

the car has been there for a month getting the head gasket, waterpump and the cylinder head overhauled with hardened valve seat and new exhaust valves fitted. Now we can use unleaded without having to worry about puuting additive in with it. as we were getting the headgasket done, NOT getting the valve seats done at the same ttime seemed to be daft.

 

now it has taken the machine shop most of that month to do something that should have done and sorted in a few days.

 

hmmmmm......

 

still, the car does seem to run ok and with no over heating, at least not so far. the reversing lights are still coming on at random points as we think the switch in the housing is jiggered, so as a stop gap fix i've taken the bulb out of the lamps. well that fixed it for now!

 

oh and teddy is making him self comfortable. 

 

and look, i'm not the only one getting the old car out, cos Rodny mini met this lovely looking 2CV in town thi morning. its lovely. and i've not seen it about town before. so we are not the only one getting ready for Drive it Day.

Need CE, D, DE & H. Not interested in pulling any trailers, did a few days of artic lessons, hated it. (But I hate towing with a car as well - I can do it, I'd just prefer a larger rigid vehicle to put things in)

 

I'd give buses a go if it wasn't a normal service bus. Coach tours or private hire with a shonky Leyland National is more my cup of tea.

Been here in France for about 10 days. In that time I have cut the grass, drunk wine, strimmed the edges, drunk wine, cut the grass, drunk wine, planted my herb garden, drunk wine, mowed the grass and drunk wine. Things were going well. Was talking to a friend who had her car in at a specialist for brake work, but the specialist dropped dead before completing the work. She is not sure what has been completed but the handbrake does not work. I am completely unfamiliar with these cars, but agreed to have a look, so she dropped it off this afternoon.

 

 

It came with a HBOL and the handbrake looks complicated with special tool mentioned but tomorrow I will find out.

Handbrakes on 2CVs can be tricky, mine used to be difficult to use the handle without it jamming,  then I did not make one 2CV rally when it started dragging. I handed it over to a man who knew and now it is perfect.

I have the special tool somewhere. There is a short set of steps to do it, but they go out of setting with monotonous regularity with use.

Yes, NL registered, the owner lived in Amsterdam before moving to France. The specialist was going to sort French registration as well, so I am also looking into that. I will get the 2CV up in the air (well on my ramps so I can get under it) tomorrow and see what I can do. At the moment the handbrake pulls all the way out with no effect whatsoever.

Disc handbrakes never stay in adjustment for long. You ideally need a special tool to enable you to turn the eccentric adjuster and the lock nut independently. All access is from above. Get the heater hoses out of the way and watch out for sharp edges.

Went round to my dad's today to get a few jobs done, first I helped him with his Mk1, it's never ran right, even when I owned it and it's not got any better, he's invested in a new carb for it in hope that would cure it but that's flooding like the old carb before it, we couldn't work out why?

 

 

After asking on Facebook and a suggestion asking what happens if we bypassed the fuel pump and gravity fed the fuel into the carb instead and found that it runs perfectly so we've now worked out it's the "new" Quinton Hazell fuel pump I fitted which is most likely at fault and its pumping too much fuel into it. I think dad's going to fit a fuel regulator to it now to see if that cures it.

 

 

After that we dug his 1956 Ford Popular out of the back of the shed for the first time in about 3 years and took it down the barn to remove the clutch, amazing it started straight up and drove out fine.

 

 

 

 

We took it up the road to the barn, it has clutch judder but to remove the clutch is a bit of a faff, first you remove the wooden floor, disconnect a lot of bits, drop the rear axle to pull the turbo propshaft away from the gearbox before you can lift the small box out. Once out we think the clutch plate which looks new (but recon) is poorly made and isn't flat so it's a little bowed, dad's going to fit a full kit and try again.

 

 

 

Also finished the head on my Marina, it runs sweet as now, unfortunately the clutch was stick on so couldn't get it in gear! Not sure how that happened but thankfully after a bit of cranking over in gear it broke free and was fine again!

 

 

So all in a pretty productive day!
