bloody cars.....

replaced the n/s headlamp bulb yesterday.

this morning? am greeted by the bulb failure thing lit up on the dashboard. cos the o/s bulb has now blown in sympathy....... SO i've had to get another headlamp bulb. at least the guy at the local motor factos didn't have to look up on his computer what bulb the Rover actually needed. He served my yesterday!

been to the local tire emporium cos the back tires were pretty fooked. and ended up buy 4 of them.....

cos the front tires weren't that clever either. they were about legal which frankly the rear tires weren't.

bastard Rover.

That is pretty common to be honest with the bulbs. If I have a bulb go and I think its original to the car, I tend to replace the matching one on the other side. Chances are if one is end of life, the other isn't far away!

I did a little bit of digging, post 1971, I'm sure I can narrow it down further based on the dial label.

It'll definitely be 70s-early 80s. Dial label doesn't tell you anything except it's pre-1995 as that's when they changed all the regular landline numbers to have leading ones or twos, so 021 (Birmingham) became 0121, etc.

I also have one, but it has a non-standard case, it's blue with a black receiver and dial bezel, and the wiring doesn't match any schematics I've seen, so it doesn't ring and I can't make it do so. Works, though.

It will be a visual ringer for use in areas where loud ringing would not be suitable, i.e. library, theatre, hospital etc.

Someone once told me they were for deaf people, but what use is a telephone to a deaf person!

All this talk of telephones is getting me excited, shame I don’t know anything about UK models.

I'm sure my dad told me they were for deaf people too.

Honestly when I opened the box it made me realize that she really does have the measure of me, I should probably keep her around!

I live for things like it, everyday objects that literally everyone has/had that have their own histories that nobody normal cares about the details. I have a lot of information in my head somewhere about GPO phoneboxes, not the phones inside, just the red bit.

Maybe why I fit in here, i like to think, easy to find another 23 year old to enthuse about engine swapping a 205 but not many who get being so interested in the mundane. To most it's maybe "retro" but not much more. Found the same when I was into bikes.

Bumped into a friend out with his cycling club, one of them was riding a very clean 1980s Colnago with full Dura Ace. He didn't even know or care what frame tubing it had, despite it having three stickers proclaiming it. Our conversation was brief and awkward.

this was my bedside phone while i was over at Zels place, I was well pleased to find it was hooked up and working :)

(wonder what the neon lamp looking thing in the receiver is for, a visual ringer?)

There's a lot going on in that photo. Looks like my sort of place.

I know that the little oblong on the top can be removed and a switch fitted. It was if you were on a 'party line', ie a shared line with another house down the street because the exchange was full. We were like that for a time in the late 60's or early 70's. You had to lift the receiver, listen to whether it was in use then if not, press the button to get the line.

No trimphones here sadly, but I would like one.

A pink Ericofon! Now that is a rare beast, even in the 60s

10/10 would recommend a rotary phone setup, I only have rotary phones hooked up in the house and they get used regularly as mobile reception is appalling here. I once hooked up about a dozen at once using all my double adapters, I nearly deafened myself with the bells and may have slightly* broken the line distribution box for the town.

yeah it was owned by a Old Lighting collector that also had an impressive phone collection, I almost took home a rotary phone from him, but sadly it was not to be

LOL to the hooking them all up, I know someone else here who did that too

(I can imagine in your case, them all ringing, then stopping suddenly, and then the "Oh shit why did they stop? whats happened?!" :) )

Well if I hadn't got enough problems with the C4 of much slowness I've bought another car with engine problems. Scooped up an unrusty, amazingly, Mercedes c180 with a rattling timing chain. Bodywork other than the bumpers is really good and it has a mtex interior in immaculate condition. Drives well as it has only done 110k. The best bit is it has a proper lpg system fitted that is registered on the logbook and works fine once warmed up. Cracking colour too. Price? 200 quid.dbf57578076eb7afb2b278168ef1c9b9.jpg

That is exactly what happened! In retrospect, I think it was closer to 20 phones connected at once.

Later that day I went to the post office and the linesman was there in the line distribution box fixing what I had done. I asked him what he was doing and apparently “someone’s line overloaded” which had taken out all the phones in town!

Let’s just say I never did that again.

Fitted the new door mirror to the Land Rover, I was dreading the job as you have to undo the top hinge on the driver's door to unscrew the bracket from the back of the hinge. Everything came apart and went back together easily for once. I have left the door panel off as I'm waiting for a new window regulator, hopefully that will fit easily as well (I only replaced it in June so the fixings may not have seized up yet) Did run out of glue fitting the new vent flap seal, but that's a job to finish tomorrow.

Re old phones - does pulse dialling still work with modern telephone exchanges?

I can confirm that it does, no matter what some on the internet say! May vary by exchange obviously, but it currently works on mine.

If it ever stops I think you can get boxes that convert pulse dialling to DTMF, and it's almost certainly trivial* to build one in these days of Arduinos and such.

If you've never seen an old school phone exchange working, go do that now, it's so blindingly simple but at the same time hilariously complex. Like I could probably come up with the concept given the time, but to execute it on such a staggeringly large scale amazes me. Here's a video about a fairly niche aspect of phone systems, but shows an exchange working: https://youtu.be/bUIiUXvnkUQ

Sorry for derailing the thread to now be the New Old Telephone 24 thread....
