DodgeRover
Alternator change in the street on a Lexus RX300 is about an hour and a half and can be done without other dismantling. Sadly the damn thing wasn't the cause of the horrific bearing noise I am experiencing will try it with the belt off tomorrow to see if I can eliminate the A/C compressor
trigger
I've been chipping away with a few jobs on the Marina over the last couple of months, when i last drove it in August the car lost all power and died and the suspension rattled so I've had it in piece sorting the problems out, it needed the steering rack rebuilt, a proper fuel cap fitting (which ended up being a bigger job than expected!), the clutch slave cylinder being rebuilt and a few little jobs, the lost of power ended up being the round cup battery terminals being a lose bit on the battery, so silly jobs like that. So after all that done it now drives really, really nicely, probably as good as new now, which isn't that surprising seeing it's only done 25000 miles. Don't listen to those who say Marinas are shit to drive, buy a nice one and they are as nice as any other car from it's period. Today i had one of my East Coast Retro car meets so i used the opportunity to take some decent photos of it. I need to get a dent man on those boot dents! I have been asked to display it at the NEC next month on the Marina club stand, i hope it's up to standard. danthecapriman, catsinthewelder, Exiled_Tat_Gatherer and 35 others

How do you clean under the bonnet, without getting fluids in the wrong places and the electrics to die? I'm always scared of doing an under bonnet clean that does more harm than good. Your cars are always so clean under there. egg
trigger
Ah, well I just sprayed all Jizer around, gave it a blast with my pressure washer avoiding all the electrical bit and then spent the hour afterwards trying to get it restarted again... Spottedlaurel
eBay listing on the local F-reg Sunny ended yesterday at £620 reserve not met. I reckon that price was probably there or thereabouts. Owner sent me a text today asking if I wanted to make an offer on it. If I didn't already own one I might be interested, but I would want to let my silver one go having put a bit of money and effort into it - I'd lose a fair chunk of what I've put into it, and would then have to go through the same thing again. If it was a £50 heap it'd be worthwhile to stick on the driveway for spares, but it's too good for that even if I could snag it for Not A Lot. And I do have a gravel driveway, but I don't have the time or ability to do a Doctor-style job and make some money out of it. wuvvum, Split_Pin, BorniteIdentity and 2 others

Great show as always; thanks again to Trigger and everyone who helps at the meets. Here are a few photos I grabbed before I had to rush off. Very nice XJ40 Pair of Zodiacs Along with a Herald Very unusual to see a 5-Series of this generation, it was in excellent condition 50's Vauxhall content Gorgeous Alfa GT Seen as Trigger is sans SD1, someone else has stepped into the role of representing the SD1 owners society. I am not a Mercedes man by default, but this SL500 really pushed my buttons. However this Mk2 SRi was in the running to be my highlight of the show. Absolutely stunning. Although this Mk1 was equally appealing too, I loved this. First time having seen an Ro80 too Capri S Clean 480 It is funny that this was here today, as myself and someone I know at work have somehow ended up talking about Monzas a lot lately. This 3.0 was very appealing. BMW 323 Autoshite coloured Rolls Royce First time seeing this here. The noise upon arrival was something to savour. This was also impressive too, in a very unexpected way. Mk3 Cortina duo Along with this HB Viva Photo isn't as good as those on the previous page, but everyone likes to see it. And to finish, the Renault 12 which I have been trying to photograph for bloody ages, having missed it at a previous show and driving around Stowmarket. vulgalour, trigger, Skizzer and 11 others

LHD, though. ...and a late one, with the bigger tail lights. Note that the reversing light is on the wrong side for UK / IRL, but NSU by this time were not going to tool up the tail lights specially for UK where sales were now very low. If a UK car, would have been a special order at the time it was first registered. Brodders

GrumpiusMaximus
Saw just about the scariest thing last night on the M2. Just after the Medway bridge was a coach on fire, attended by the emergency services. We were on the opposite carriageway. It was harrowing. I'm glad to say that it would appear nobody got hurt, thank goodness.
beko1987
Can anyone recommend a ball bearing lubricant? It's for vacuum cleaners, but bearings are bearings. I've been scopping general grease in, but the machine I am refurbishing now could do with something a bit more special... Bonus points for it being easy to get hold of on ebay/amazon etc! DodgeRover
There's the grey graphite grease, no idea on it's suitability for a given application though.Do they have seals on the bearings or do they get full of dust and crap?
Ghosty
Anyone in Manchester have a rattle gun I can use? The GTi engine doesn't have any sort of cam locking facility and I can't be arsed putting the whole thing back together to have to do it again for the cambelt. That sounds excessive, work the stuff one until it's loose or it will either bugger the housing or the shaft.
DodgeRover
Right for the Shiters of the future and the good of the internet in general I can reveal that on a mk1 lexus rx300/ Toyota Harrier if you need to delete the aircon pump then the belt you need is a 6pk938, this JUST clears the top of the aircon pulley when fitted, a couple of mm longer might be better but I'm not sure of the adjustment remaining on the alternator. skattrd
somewhatfoolish
Spinning around... In a dry only vacuum cleanerDoes the non-freespinning one feel gritty or rough when you spin it, or can you rock the outer part relative to the inner? In either case it really needs replacing. Any general purpose grease will do the job as long as the seals keep dirt out. Don't fill the bearing up completely, push grease in until it starts squeezing through the other side then wipe most of it off again. beko1987

Knowing the state of the motor when I got the vac (exploded fan) it's taken its fair share of abuse! I'll probably fit it to the top of the motor and put the better one by the fancase. I think I've always over-packed them before then, I've filled them right up and popped the cap on! Will pap the bearing number up when I get home. The ones on ebay are £5 with £silly foreign postage! Their no 608zz cheap ones for sure
