It's a shame they're fucking worthless even working else there would be a very good earner in buying them up at scrap money and learning how to rebuild them properly

I just tried to read the forums about RX8 swaps but it was harder than fixing the engine. I'm getting the impression that these cars a bit of a nightmare.

By contrast my own simpletons engine swap advanced a bit yesterday after I bought an ex LR 90 2.5 petrol home. It is to go in my P4 which at present has its original worn and gutless 2.2 six. I always intended to fit something else as these oddball sixes are stuck with an unalterable low compression ratio and are thus a poor choice to run on LPG, though it has been doing so for a year now.

The gearbox bell-housing has to be swapped for one from an 80 P4 then it should go in fairly easily and I can enjoy all those extra 10 brake horsepowers.

Before you write me off as insane I should say horsepower claims before the existence of trading standards were more than a little unreliable and the 2.5 has quite a bit more low down torque.

If all this fails the new engine can be taken to 2.8 litres and quite a bit of tuning stuff is available to get it close to what people in the modern world take for granted. On a Fiesta.

Went to a (house clearance) auction today.  This Merc was hiding in the corner for the next sale. 2.0 Auto, 129k on the clock, deceased owner, I'm tempted but the front n/s wing is a bit frilly and the passenger door mirror is missing. Other than that it looks quite clean.

Plenty of time to think about it as the next sale isn't for 4 weeks.

I'm not having a good car week.  The Jag's MOT failure means it may have to go, with or without a ticket and the Skoda, normally a paragon of dull reliability, decided to rip a cable out of the passenger electric window mechanism (plastic bit snapped off, whole new regulator needed) so that's marooned on my driveway with a bin bag taped over the window until my tame mechanic has time to fit it in.

On the plus side, as the Skoda's now a company car (and therefore I technically only own one car now) my boss has given me his spare 'loan' car - a Y-reg Rover 75 2.5KV6.  Despite saying I don't like these, after a hundred miles or so mixing motorways, A-roads and B-roads full of hills and hairpins I have warmed to it, even though the engine is quite gutless for its size with absolutely no torque - makes a nice noise though.  Handles well, comfortable and spacious, he's looked after it well over the time he's had it but it would benefit from some new plug leads and a de-clonk of the front suspension, steering rack is tight on one side apparently although the steering feels good.

Earlier this afternoon, I saw something which I'm pretty sure isn't legal in the UK.

A guy was pootling along on a bicycle with an engine. One of those properly shonky looking things. Of course he wasn't wearing a helmet or any other protective gear.

However, I couldn't help but smile as he went past. It was so fecking slow it was hardly a danger to anybody but himself. :D

Pretty sure it should be registered, insured and the bloke should have licence and helmet.

Funnily enough I saw someone on an ancient, possibly French, engine on wheel moped on Saturday, again no plates or helmet.

Depending on what it was, it may well have been perfectly legal. I was given one of those things, years ago. Badged as a "Mason", it was a REALLY heavy mountain bike, with a 34cc two-stroke engine. The engine drove a rubber wheel, which in turn drove the back wheel of the bicycle. It didn't run when I was given it, but I got it sorted, and got a right few bob for it.

ISTR that how the drive is transmitted determines whether it's a moped or not. Rubber wheel against the tyre=no, directly driven chain=yes. I think anyway, it was a pretty long time ago.

I also believe that some of the home shopping catalogue companies sold them for a time.

is it auto or manual? i dont think the autobox does the 2.5v6 many favours, its an engine that loves to be revved, but never does attached to an autobox.

duff VIS motors will make a miserable drive as well.

It's a manual, seems in good health as it is very smooth but the air con really makes a difference and it does seem to bog down when pulling away from roundabouts, there is a subtle miss under load sometimes noticeable which I would put down to old leads but it's tiny, barely perceptible. It had no torque but goes well enough if you keep the revs up and is a lovely motorway car.

I'm used to the 4.0 Jag now though plus a torquey old diesel so I'm a bit spoilt.

I have an Auto and that is super slug until 4000 rpm and then revs well, but not what you really want.

Wings on these are a consumable item....don't worry! A new mirror will be about £20.

A good 190e is as treat. Every journey is an event. They do go wrong though and are best treated to specialist care.

Ask me how I know.

Did they ever do a 4x4 with selecta box? I had a d plated 750 fire years back and from what I recall it struggled to top 55 and didn't half drink fuel. Wouldn't mind a 4x4 though.

;

No, no auto 4x4.  The 750's should be better on fuel than a 999cc, maybe the carb was knackered?

He's wrong about using a 2x4 to reshell a 4x4, the floor pan is totally different virtually a mk1 floor pan, converting a 2wd wont work either for same reason unless its a mk1 which is worth more than a 4x4 anyway!

Still some cheapish 4x4's about if you are willing to do some work and they really are fun off road!

I think the 2dr was available right upto the end of the D2,and I'm guessing it was an Irish commercial originally for tax reasons.....

No , that's what makes it interesting there was never a 2 door Disco2, even the commercials, predominantly for Ireland and other tax avoiding foreigners , as you say, were all 4 doors.

BruthaN, just spotted this and sent it to me.

WTF? Is it a factory prototype or maybe series 1 sides stitched into a TD5?

Anyone got any idea?

Not sure you can stitch a 1 side into a 2 as the overhang is longer. Side glass is five door sized, so I suspect the door has been blended into the side panel and I doubt that window opens.

So a bottle of holes rad weld turned up from Amazon today. Half the price of Kseal and does the same so gave it a go.

After dumping it in the expansion tank the bottle says leave to idle doe 15-25 minutes but after 15 it was still leaking, went for a drive.

Bugger me it worked! Obviously it wasn't getting hot enough standing there but now it's totally dry on the bottom of the radiator. Found a spray can of cavity wax so gave it a quick shit of that to be sure.

By the looks of it the top and bottom are symmetrical so I can flip it over and try again if it pops.
