It didn't get polished at all last year, as it only did 150miles. I thought I'd try the poorboys black hole and that blue paste wax on it. It's masked a few of the surface marks quite well. Not so much a deeper scratch on the windscreen surround but other than painting it I'm not sure anything else will be better.

I may have killed this 13mm socket, but the bolt is out! Autoshite Rule #3 wins again.

Still have some concerns with the hub nuts on the Nippa. I think they're 33mm, but I'm using some wacky imperial size, one and 5/16th" or something daft, from a Mini. It is a little loose, but nonetheless, it has got both of them off. Halfrauds want £20 for the correct socket, so given I'll probably never use it again, that idea can sod off.

 

Discs and pads arrive tomorrow, though I'm now a bolt short. Someone is sending me a pair of used calipers though, so I'll ask them to chuck in a few bolts.

Does anyone have an opinion on P38 range rovers? Namely the 2.5 diesel ones. Noticed one cheap but without an MOT. Maybe cheap enough to break If it's no good.

I didn't realise the nippa had the silly disc behind up set up !

Transits have this and the 100 onward ones are a major pain in the ass when they go rusty .

Some rovers and hondas had it too and you had to slidehammer the hub off .

From my experience, watch for diesel pump leaks. They're also pretty terribly slow and the electrics make French stuff seem impressively reliable. I think the P38 is the only car too terrible for even Sam Glover.

No matter how hard I google this is the sort of feedback I get on them. It's a 200k example with no MOT so I think I'd be wise to give it a swerve

I'm sure there are folk on here who have bought one and survived, but the potential to be a massive money pit should not be ignored.

I've had one experience with a P38. 4.6 with LPG.

 

The LPG worked on test drive (somehow) but then failed to work once I got it home which kind of defeated the object of me buying it. I had a couple of other concerns with it so I shifted it on. 500 miles later the bottom end let go.

 

Would not buy again.

I drove this one on Thursday which I could dig out a recommissioning thread for if you're interested; drives really nicely IMHO.  

 

Very much would, if I had the skills / knowledge / experience / and a little bit more money.  Task (who it belongs to) said he was impressed with it compared with his late RRCs and that the scare stories are no worse than for the later RRCs which have nearly as much electrical wizardry.

They're getting on now so expect the relevant problems with old age

Diesels are slow.They can be pepped up a bit with a Tuning box.

If it overheats then the head can warp beyond repair but there are plenty of Omega/Beemers to rob one off

Can suffer from hot start problems,a bodge is available easy enough

Most of the air suspension faults are now easily sorted,if it's still on its original airbags then they're doing well

Problems with Hevac are common but loads of info and help out there

Becm's can be reprogrammed to remove immobiliser so no worries there

They demand a good quality battery,and possibly a smart charger to keep it topped up

Loved mine,would definitely have another but only if it came​ with a Nanocom reader

 

How cheap is cheap LT?

My name is Callum and I have one good P38 and one fucked one.

 

I would advise getting a manual one if you can find one, because you need to hang onto every single rev to wring any shove out of it. I haven't driven an auto, but from what other people have said, it doesn't sound like the gearbox is set up to allow you to do this, and they are extremely glacial as a result. They like a drink, but not catastrophically, my trip computer says i get 23mpg round the doors so I reckon actually closer to 20.

 

Mine's had all the troublesome electronic bollocks taken off (no EAS/immobiliser/remote locking), has done 158k and is a reliable daily hack. Like others have said, the heaters are troublesome, and my driver's side blend motor is stuck, so it only blows cold, which is fine this time of year. It was stuck on hot for most of the winter though, so the car must have a sense of humour. Literally everything else electrical works though, so I think the reputation for gremlins is slightly undeserved.

 

I've just lost an eBay auction for another one actually, were we looking at the same one? It was green.

Have been to see a cracking ZT 190, shed-loads of service history, no hint of grot, well cared for example.

 

However, it's got the VIS rattle and it seems slightly down on power (from what I expected anyway - I've never driven one before). Plenty of torque, well planted and keeps going, but it doesn't seem as free revving as I expected. However, I'm comparing this to the 820 Vitesse I travelled in.

 

Heavy V6 vs 2 litre turbo: am I comparing apples and oranges?

 

Am I right that if it's already rattling, it's the inlet manifold that needs replacing? If it was just down on power, I'd get away with the VIS motors - or have I got it wrong?

 

Price isn't bad, but was trying to avoid a project - if it's manifold time, I'd want to reduce the offer.

Gah. Amazon have just advised that the replacement Camry caliper I’d ordered isn’t available. Looks like it’ll have to be a repair kit then, I’d rather that than an exchange unit from a company I’ve never heard of before.

 

Rather limited spare cash this month however, so that’ll have to wait until next payday and I’ll use the other old things instead (Laurel driven to work today).

Discs and pads arrived for the Nippa. Hoorah! Went to fit then. Oh FFS...

That's the Nippa now stranded off-road for another gawd-knows-how-long. Naturally, they arrived so late in the day that the place I bought them from is closed for the day, so another working day gone. This is officially shit.

 

All the more annoying as for once, I opted not to buy cheap shit on Ebay, but went to Brakes International instead.

My recently acquired Lincoln town car was a bit of a gamble, and was priced to match a malfunctioning alarm and mot measured in days. I've binned the alarm, and seeing nothing obvious amiss chucked it in for a MOT today......

Which it passed!

Got the shed ZX back today, and the ropey clutch was a bit of a shock after the smooth gearbox and clutch of my other recent purchase. Still, at least it doesn't take ages to start anymore....

Garage said it's missing a seal by the intercooler meaning it's leaking a little bit of oil, should I be concerned? I'm not looking to preserve it.

Bought a new fan belt (auxiliary belt? Drive belt? Accessory belt?) For the focus.

 

Tried and failed to find the tensioner. Turns out it's a stretch belt and you need a special tool to fit. Thanks for that ford.

 

Also turns out the water pump runs off the fan belt in these so I can't really ignore it.

 

I'm not for buying a special tool so what's chances I can take a bolt out of the alternator, tilt it down to fit the new belt then lever it back up again??

Is it a hammer, a smaller socket and half a scaffold bar?

If it's a single pulley you can fit the belt carefully with a round shanked screwdriver and turn the engine over by hand

In the end I undone the top two bolts and pivoted it forwards on the lower bolt

I don't know if I missed something, but have you bought another car?

 

You are probably going to have a higher turnover of cars than Cavcraft this year if you carry on at this rate.

 

In other news, the 75 passed the MOT with no advisories today, which was a pleasant surprise.
