Stanky's Geep - fire sale

Recommended Posts

The seller said that it is blue, and has no roof. So Google suggests it might look like this

Or a blue version of this

Or most likely this

But I reckon I can cut a vaguely-square bit of ply and whack it in the hole then its basically running, right?

Sounds good but be ready for lotsandlots of hassle from our beloved DVLA. Owner says it is unfinished, and therefore will not be registered. Does not meet requirements for keeping original reg no off the donor so will be Q plate and will have to go through SVA or whatever it is called. All doable of course, but hassle.

I was pondering inviting the Solent Shiters over to assess it at some point soon-ish. The sensible-hat questions I have are:

1. Does it have a V5?

2. Does it have a VIN?

3. How fast does it go, mister?

4. What is original Escort

Don't the DVLA have some kind of point system to determine if it can keep the original reg? So lets assume the chassis and both axles are Mk1 escort - does that give me enough points? What else does it need or am I barking up the wrong tree? (please note this is not going to put me off, just a few more challenges to overcome)

Chassis can't be Mk1 Escort, because they're monocoque. I guess that's the crunch point. I think you need either body or chassis regardless of points these days. The Suzuki plan sounds like a nice fall-back. Or I wonder if they'd fit a Daihatsu Sportrak chassis?

Well, I can't wait to see it.   A friend of mine used to lay the bodywork up for these over at Chichester (Quarry Lane I think....).   My MOT man had one years ago - he managed to fit child seats in it and was a fussy bugger so they must be alright.    What a cracking find - if that word is appropriate in this application.

Edit - It WAS Quarry Lane, the brochure popped after I had written my post!

Thanks, good point re monocoque - I'll see whats what tomorrow with that. I assume a motley collection of angle iron, waxoyl and rust with some rotten ply self-tappered to it but there. i think it will be character building or something.

If its already on a Q-plate, does that mean it has been SVA'd and I just (hah!) need a regular MOT?

i went looking for it earlier and there is only one house along the road that has a conspicuous tarp-covered thing down the side so i think I know where it lives.

As Ultrawomble pointed out, it doesn't matter what it's like there's a couple of hundred quids worth of 1600 X-flow , axle and gearbox. In fact sell the Ford bits throw away the chassis and plonk the plastic pseudo Jeep body on whatever V5'd chassis it'll fit on .

Presumably there's no rule against buying a dateless plate and putting it on, just as you might with any other car?  Surely YFR 716 (just for example, being one I used to own) is eligible to be put on this exactly as it was on my 1990 Chrysler leBaron?

Yes, I'm afraid there is specifically a rule that you cannot put a personal reg on a Q plate, once a Q it stays a Q unless you can convince the DVLA it has enough points, which is pretty difficult to do retrospectively.

TBH all that DVLA guff sounds like stress, I say remove and eBay the running gear, chop the rest up and take it to the tip, and have a cheapy easyJet/airbnb weekend break to Lisbon on the proceeds. 'A bit wasteful' you might say. BUT, in the future when something good comes up, you can simply reach for the story of the Jeep and the trip to Lisbon, and all wifely objections will immediately evaporate. Think of it as an investment in the future

Basically what you're saying is no matter how I look at this, I cannot possibly fail? I like this. A lot.

pics of the horror tomorrow early afternoon when I get back from a family lunchtime activity.

I'm going to look for a trailer and local offroad venues (or allotments as they are better known) as a plan B.

Moving this over here in case anyone has missed it. Needing this gone within next 2 weeks due to losing parking space. Couple of faults but nothing major. Its mot'd til jan and in good running order. Price drop to £300 as is for quick sale, otherwise i fix the faults and stick it on bumtree for twice that amount! Would make a good winter beater for someone

Going to try this on here before the fun that is eBay or similar.

My mum has recently replaced her trusty old SportKa with a newer 500 and currently it’s just sat in the garage.

It’s only done 38k with I think mum being the third owner plus a very large file of bills. As you can see from the MOT history ‘a lot’ of miles have been done in the last few years....! Has the leather interior, an aftermarket Bluetooth kit, Air Con that works and four good tyres plus working remote key.

It has had some attention by a welder in the past but the filler area is solid and other than a few obvious bits on the sills and corners of the rear bumpers is in nice condition.

If anyone is interested please let me know. I’m back there later this week so can look at the paperwork or anything else on the car in more detail.

      She’s looking for about £750-800.

Car is currently SORN and located in deepest Lincolnshire (near Spilsby).

Departarting from the norm, I'm being lazy and have actually managed to convince the seller to deliver to my house at no cost. It's only the other side of town but haven't got the time to collect today.

2 hour countdown starts at 9am

Hot on the heels of last week’s collectioneering of a Xantia, another collection starts here and now. Well it is probably a collection as long as the car is as described, but I am optimistic.

Clues. It’s enormous yet quite cramped. Never had one before and it could be considered blessed, saintly even!

      It's the green one.
If you're proper horny for it then PM me, but anyone with cash can buy a car any time. Meh.
Would roffle, but CBA with the admin.

      Therefore, funtime!

      Another KruJoe-spec 99p start AUCTION...

(GBP (Pounds Sterling) bids only, no licked Twixes (John_F, I'm talking to you), bid increments 50 pence or more, that's up to you. Auction ends 24 hours after the last bid. Other T&C's may apply if I haven't thought of them yet.)

      It's a risk, but I'll take it.
I've thought of a number as a reserve, roughly bridge price plus today's £50 MOT fee, so above that, I'm happy. If it doesn't work, we'll re-think, but his is will be a cheap car for one of you lot.

      Location:

Central, so close to everyone on mainland UK.

Collection: most days/times are possible, evenings are good. Relaxed timescale, storage is not a problem here. I can bring you to it from Skipton bus or rail station.
      The Car.
My dependable daily for two FTP-free years. Ex-JohnK and Bramz.
1.4 Rti run-out model, lots of toys.
Cheap tax and cla$$ic policy friendly (£140pa, Carole Nash. A.Flux quoted similar).
Tested until 31 May 2020, advised on two back tyres.
Not yet 62,000 on the dial. Likely to be SORN'd before June. V5 here, with loads of history.
New oil and filter last week.
Good batt, exhaust, brakes etc. There are a few minor niggles, I've just lived with it. Character, innit.
Squishy-comfort velour in fine fettle. (Almost) everything works.
The bodywork scrubs up well but there's some bits of rust if you really go looking. It doesn't stop it being a respectable motor… until… last week one of my favourite brothers rubbed a tractor down the side, damaging two doors and the mirror.

All still work fine, and I still have the (undamaged) plastic strip from the door. I don't have the arsedness to try improving it cosmetically and I'm ready for a change of daily anyway. The worst would likely push out from inside. As would the small bit on the arch – it's single skinned there. Until that happened, nobody has ever turned their nose up at it, and it has attracted a lot of positive conversation.

      99p anyone?
