Stanky's Geep - fire sale

Stanky

Recommended Posts

Thanks, provisional plan is the afternoon of the 9th December (Next saturday) when my wife and daughter are going out so we have free reign of the drive, garage and - most importantly - kettle.

If we can pump the tyres up, free the brakes up enough to push it off (or failing that drag it off with a tow rope) then move it the 800m to my house either towed behind a car or pushed, and get it up on my drive initially for inspection. If I'm very organised there may be space made in the garage for it afterwards.

tea and biscuits can be provided and potentially pub lunch too? How's that as an incentive?

Well scored Stanky!! Can I just throw into the mix of possibilities, that different rules might apply re IVA etc if it can be demonstrated the build date was before a certain cut-off date? Or am I thinking of something else and therefore talking out of my arse again.

Maybe phenolic ply? Seems to last many years being used and abused as trailer flooring, out in the open.

I've had a look at this stuff, is it treated all the way through so can be cut to shape without leaving exposed edges? It looks (and I'm probably wrong) like a sort of coated board which is perfect if you can get it made to shape, but I suspect that the D-shaped bit which forms the front footwells will only have one coated edge (the trailing edge)

Or have I got it totally wrong? £20 for a 10' x 5' sheet isn't bad at all.

It seems to be a bit of a minefield, DVLAs own guide say it's not required for a vehicle over 10 years old, but elsewhere it says ALL kit cars need one.

If it's definitely not been registered before I would enlist some tame fibreglass lickers eg http://www.jagoownersclub.co.uk/, they will surely be able to advise the best way to go about it.

Just get some outdoor grade ply, some seam sealer/Tiger seal or similar and cut the boards to shape. Then paint them with something like waxoyl under seal all over then apply a bead of sealer around the edges of where it sits/screws to the chassis or body tub and secure it down with the original bolts or screws etc it had before.

The sealer will stop moisture getting in under the joints and the under seal will stop the wood rotting again.

Room for one more helper Mr Stank , I can bring the 3 litre of Mitsi to assist with the dragging out ceremony . Do you know what stud pattern the hubs are , I might have a set of Ford rims and wheels for temporary fitment if the old ones are shot .I've got some lorry straps for extra dragging strength as well .

Of course! There is always room for one more!

The hubs are escort so 4x 100? deffo 4 stud. The wheels on it are ok, but the tyres are on the deflated side so will need air. If you have wheelnuts though that would be superb as most wheels only have 2 nuts holding them on.

Old Fords of this vintage are 4 x 108. Pretty much any four stud Ford wheel should do the job.

That looks great actually! PM me the chassis number if you find it and I'll HPI for you and ascertain the original reg.

I work next door to an established Kit Car manufacturer. They'll take a car for an IVA and be out all day, only to return with a fail sheet as long as their arm.. and they've been doing it for decades! It'll always take at least two attempts to get through. Lights half an inch too low, roll bar bolt exposed within a mm of an area it shouldn't or some other shit - Sounds a right PITA. After spending another week rectifying the thing to pass at the next attempt, they'll return with their fresh Pass certificate and put it straight back to how is was!

Which is exactly the reason they fail in the first place.  They build the car how they want it to be, then do the bare minimum modifications to get it to pass the IVA, and then return it to how it was intended.  if they'd just build it to pass an IVA in the first place, they'd likely pass first time.

Phenolic ply is the way to go, treat the cut edges with a wood hardener, blob of silicone over any screw heads or holes and it will last forever, plus it comes in non slip varieties.

Top quality win, looks good in Ivercar blue as well. Is the race on with Mr Wobbler to see who recommissions fiberglass tubs the quickest?

...and what's all this put a bazuki chassis under it bullshit? has any one ever driven an SJfallover- they ay feckkin awfull- makes the ride of a mk2 XR2 seem comfortable!

I think you've been reading to many glossy mags, they are ace off road and can corner pretty hard I've never tipped one yet even when I was an 18 year old macrae wannabe.

This one which was sourced from this very forum was very competent once the 1600cc vitara engine was shoehorned in, it embaresed some rather expensive Olli types
