I somehow get the feeling this might not be practical.

I've driven to Inverness from home a couple of times now, but that was for work and I was getting paid for it.  over 1100 miles round-trip is just rather a lot for a weekend.  Which is a real shame, as I would love to come to one of these finally.

Did consider bringing the whole family, as SWMBO is not averse to sitting in a field and talking shite, but bringing a 4yo and 5yo is probably not a genius idea, and would mean the drive would have to be split over 2 days each way.. which means we're then looking at essentially a week away...

It was only 100 miles further to drive to Barcelona.

I always laugh when people say 550 miles is too far, when you live up here everything is a long way away so you get used to it!

I regularly travel between Chez Saabnut and my place south of Le Mans, a distance of 939 miles each way. Cars that have done this run (some several times) so far are 1989 Saab 900 Carlsson, 1935 Rolls Royce 20/25 (twice) 1934 RR 20/25, 1968 Rover P5b (3 times) 1989 Saab 900i vert, 1978 Bentley T2 Turbo, Cobra (many times) plus the 9-3 diesel (so many times I have lost count). In the spirit of Autoshite, my last WBOD Saab 9-3 which cost 200 quid did the journey 3 times (once towing a boat) and my current WBOD the 200 quid VW Polio TDi has just completed its first trip. I have never used my European breakdown cover!

Just pop up for the weekend, you know you want to. As a friend said as I set out in the Polio, not knowing if you will get there is half the fun. I may* agree with that.

In all seriousness, should anybody FTP within 50 or so miles of my place, I can collect so you enjoy the weekend before calling your choice of recovery company to return home. I will provide contact details with navigation details nearer the time.

Do you still have the two 30s Rolls Royces, will they be on display at Shitefest?

I've been doing some pontificating about this, cost and time wise.

TL:DR - don't count me in yet by any means, but I'm not counting myself out right now

Given university commitments/essays/dissertations and the like, I don't have the time or money to make a week or holiday out of it, although that does sound very attractive. Further, as someone who doesn't do cars, or social media, MrsYoof is incredibly tolerant and understanding of my tendancy to go and meet strangers from the Internet, but she wouldn't want to (and I wouldn't make her) travel that far to stand/sit about speaking to people in a largely car-oriented environment. So I'd want her to be okay with me going away for a couple of nights by myself, and I'm not sure her tolerance or understanding would be pushed that far. I would  argue the point that I'd leave on Friday and return on Sunday; no more than two nights.

On the basis that she is okay with the principle, I have then considered travelling. It's 450 miles from here to AB30 by car - 7hr 30. I'm an absolute softie-novice when it comes to long distance hauling. The furthest north I've driven is York, the furthest I've driven in one day is to north Devon (220 miles). I have literally nothing on anyone on here.

I doubt I would want drive (or be a passenger) for 450 miles in one go for a two night stay somewhere; I'd be so tired I'd not enjoy the event. I don't do flying because I'm a massive blouse, so this leaves the train.

I'd spend £150 on petrol going there and back (two x £75 tanks in the S60), so that would be my budget for train tickets. The interesting news is that it looks like I can do Peterborough to Aberdeen in 6hr at a cost of around £150 for a return ticket (leaving Friday returning Sunday). This is a general ticket and not 'split' or an 'advance' booking price. This only works on the assumption that I can cadge a free lift all the way to Peterborough and then home again.

This is also assuming I can crash, for example, at 17_Coffee's place or something, for nothing other than modest beer tokens.

While a lot of you will do this on a whim, it's a biggie for me, but the attraction of Saabnut's amazing treasure trove of dreams and meeting people properly (as I never really socialised properly at Buckinghamshitefest) is making me have serious thinking time.

Hmmmmm....

stuff about getting a train

Cool! I can pick you up from the train station in my beige Mondeo and blend in with all the other taxis!

I have a spare room in my house which is comparable to the spare room I stay in at your house when I visit. :P

if you live further than 150 miles from the scottish border

fly

its only a weekend - why spend 2/3rds of it travelling

l kirk is still 200 miles from langholm or 160 from carter bar

Beko - I don't do camping. I need amenities.

I really cannot emphasise enough how much of a useless southern softie I am.

Problem with flying up is that it's not just the 1h flight.  I've looked into this before now for travelling to Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and various other locations we have kit at.  to make any of those journeys its:

50 mins drive to the airport.  10 mins to transfer from car park to terminal.

2 hrs of fucking around doing sod all, that you have to leave, just in case security is chaotic, and you need the extra time.

1hr flight.

15 mins to get out at the other end.

45 mins drive to your destination.

So what was a 1hr flight suddenly becomes a 5hr journey.  Given that I can drive to Glasgow/Edinburgh in only 2hrs more, and it's done on *my* timetable, not the airlines, that makes a lot of sense to me.  Many times I have been able to bring forward / delay my journey by an hour or two because it suited me.  Flying just doesn't have that flexibility.

Even flying to Inverness, although it made more sense than to Glasgow/Edinburgh, still wasn't worth it.  I did the journey both times in Discoveries (a 300tdi that gave me a headache, and a Td5 that was much more refined), and both times the journey was part of the experience.

Not a million miles away.. that is Ashington isn't it?  I am in Pulborough.

Correct, Willow Way to be more accurate.

All those years of crap teachers at Rydon & Steyning Grammar *shudder*.

The SVM's closest Shitefest yet was in Malham.

I've done Malham (184mi each way), Wales twice (334mi each way to Devil's Bridge), Lincolnshire (314mi each way), Wilts (390mi each way) and Bucks (410mi each way).

Aberdeenshire should be a doddle.

Same except the Wiltshire one. And the furthest away one I did in the bus at 8.8mpg

If anyone wants to fly / train / bus to Dundee, lifts could be arranged.

Aberdeenshire eh? That's not even far away! Not for someone who once went to Kent for a Xantia anyway.

Or someone went went to That There London for a pair of hi-fi speakers in less than 17 hours
