🚨L1's euro♦️ shenanigans 🍷🚨

Thinking about moving the 306 on.  It's an HDI estate,

Brain splurge:

Recent cambelt (2 years).

No rot

Everything works except the AC which is questionable.

Rear axle was refurbished when it was in the hands of one of the well known axle builders (who also did the belt) a couple of years ago.  Downside: it's been lowered as part of the process.  It looks "sick" on 17"s, but it only has 15s on.  It probably does roll less than stock, and not so long ago I might have considered it an improvement; but we're moving to upper weardale where the roads have undulations, so laden up it could be a pain.  The ride is still lovely, but flying over bumps flat out isn't going to work out long term, and Mrs L1 took the 205 by choice last night which tells me what I needed to know.

Spare wheel and cage are missing.  I've fitted a new wiper arm and blade on the back, but I think the motor is seized.  And I've removed the stupid wind deflectors as they hid the mirrors from the driver..

It pulls nicely, has OEM headlight protectors, and an OEM CD player which still works with the stalk controls.

It owes me £750.

Paul is a nice chap. Sold him a 405 a couple years ago that I regret. Easiest car sale ever, just left it in a pub car park with the keys on the inside of the bumper and he got it collected.

Open jury on this one at the moment.

Bucketeer got a fairly miserable 38mpg at 65mph last night, which is I think a record.  Certainly the worst on any car he's delivered for me (S60 2.4t, baleno, 205, 206GTI, probably some others).  It's also abysmally slow, and throwing lots of codes for fuel additive and DPF etc.  It's missing a few bits of trim and has obviously been unloved for a few years, and the ABS is kicking in when braking gently so needs a bit of fettling.  And OH MY GOD the beeping.  Aftermarket reversing sensors and a Nokia phone kit make a god awful racket, plus throwing errors for the fuel flap open and eco mode due to the DPF.  It might be a bit much for me, though a lot of it just needs a bit of time and graft.

On the plus side the ride is amazing, beautifully smooth, the steering is great despite the crappy tyres all round, and the interior, though minging, is one of the nicest places I've ever sat now it's been scrubbed twice.  It does need cleaning again though.

It might be cheaper to lift the 306 (which is a known excellent car) than get this working properly though, so we will have to see.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I tried cleaning the MAF, and fucked it.  EML on, 8mph up hills type fucked.

I bought a good, used Siemens one off eBay for £20.  It was the same, but I assumed that it would need the code clearing, so drove the @Jimblob @Jimbob McGregorMcGregorMcGregor's and he stayed at work till 10pm helping me establish that it too was fucked.

A nice* shiny new no brand one came from ECP today, and whilst the EML is still on, it can at least reach 60mph and is faster than it was when I got it.  Still taking 18 seconds to hit 60, which should be closer to 10, but that's probably the fact it's not been able to regen the DPF since the fuel filler cap sensor broke, whenever that was.  I have made an appropriate hack to put in place so the ECU can dose the right amount of Eolys fluid assuming those codes also vanish after a while.

ABS still kicking in at low speeds, indicator stalk still tired, headlights still in desperate need of a polish.  And the tyres on the back are worn unevenly, but I suspect they might be part worns.  It's not been loved in a long while.

On another note, @chaseracer, does the boot lock on the 205 work with either of the keys?

306 still kicking about, roffle kinda paused until the 406 gets a go/no-go

Hmm, this one’s going to take more looking into isn’t it? Perhaps checking vacuum pipes/actuator/turbo, etc etc although all the codes are dpf additive  related.

Let‘s look at dpf loading etc and it might well be worth pulling it out and pressure washing. Also do I see that these things have swirl flaps.....?

I've had two 2.2s and one was the forum bike 406 coupe, which sporty shite fixed with a MAF. I then owned a C5 which seemed ok speed wise but the sheer glacial size of it seemed to not suit the engine. But then equally the other C5 I had was a 90 and it seemed a lot faster!?

I'm really not sure why the 2.2 136 is so prone to issues.

Sorry you're having a time of it with the car.

I've got one ignition key and one door key.  One of them does the fuel filler too.

Don't suppose it's an issue not having a boot key... since I can just use a rake to lock / unlock it.

Spent a bit of time driving the 406 around this weekend, partially because Mrs L1 has lost the keys to the 205.

It's a load better with the new MAF, and with the fuel cap reed sensor disconnected.

Still not sure if it's staying though, as Mrs L1 thinks it's "too big" and doesn't like driving it.

I think the words of our friendly tester were: "it's always a fail, and it's always obvious"

Can you not just knock the guts of it out with a broom handle or whatever once it's removed through the open ends, then refit without it looking any different?

I found them halfway down the garden, but decided it would be best to have a spare ignition key.  I have a key blank but I'm avoiding small confined spaces with the public in, so I sat with a file.

Marvelous.

However, I didn't want to have to carry two of these bulky keys around, I bought them for the 306 which needs a transponder

On the left ignition, on the right doors.

In the middle, god knows

(Apparently I have to spell it out.  I cut each side to copy a different key; now I have one key which does it all, but has the be the right way around)

That’s what I would do (have done for a few diesel cats) and in the case of a dpf have it mapped out.
