SiC
5 hours ago, Datsuncog said: Going by the sheer amount of anger I heard during my time at Halfords from formerly loyal Renault owners, they really pissed on their chips with duff electrics and fuel pump issues. I'd wager a huge amount of Renault bad reputation came from the crank position sensor connector. If the crank position sensor doesn't see what position the engine is, it can only assume the engine isn't running. So the engine stops and no codes are stored. Even worse it usually only happens when the engine is hot - like a 40min journey where it'll be bloody awkwardly away from home. No codes and no start. Cool off and it'll run again. Also sometimes made starting hard too. Many replaced the crank position sensor to have the car run fine again. Then a few months later it does it again. By which point, as Renault are worthless at the best of times, it gets binned. Turns out the root cause was actually the connector to the crank sensor. You can actually splay the pins out in the crank sensor to get a better contact and it'll work again for a while. The proper fix is a new crank sensor with a new design connector. Problem is, Renault only discovered this too late and the damage was done. Add in direct injectors IDE engine being a massive flop and only lasting a year before being canned. Then early 1.5dci (pre 2003 pretty much) munching their fuel pumps and destroying the whole injection system. Finally the sunroof (which many had due to Renault being highly specced on even low models) drains on the Laguna II that dump water into the body computer and Fritzing it out. Then the Mégane II having the body computer above the wheel arch and hamfisted mechanics not putting the liner back in correctly. Then the first introduction of electronic handbrakes where it uses a cable rather than caliper wound system (cost) and those stretched without the system taking it properly into account. Window control modules that failed on the Mégane/Scenic II. Finally the Scenic II with a multi way plug under the front seat that always got wet when a child spills their drink, rain getting in, etc. All little things that are easily prevented but often didn't know about. Being cheap cars and French, they're disposed of rather than fixed. Unlike Similar aged Passat/etc that would get fixed with its similar problems as perceived value. I can't find anything local that's tested and legal, or not suffering from some major engine fault or serious rust, for under £1500. Yes, it's this one, drives really well and would be not a lot more than half of £1500. Will update tomorrow when MOT results are in... BeEP
Avensis now has a new MOT 🙂 I can PM more details if you're interested; if not then expect a for sale thread at the weekend! Split_Pin, Craig the Princess, Datsuncog and 2 others
Datsuncog
Congrats on the MOT! Luscious as a brown Avensis is, I think I might have to pass this time round - a quick look at ferries, planes and trains indicates it'd cost me about £400 to get over to Cambridgeshire and bring it back over to this side of the Irish Sea, and (perhaps more pressingly) would occupy most of a weekend where I'm meant to be boxing things up ahead of the move. A pity, as I really do like yours! But, much appreciate you giving me first refusal - and best of luck with the sale. In other news, it's possible that a vehicle may have been sourced... dome, Tickman, BeEP and 3 others

Datsuncog
Heh, maybe not an ideal place to park a Subaru, from a rust prevention perspective... In other news, stay tuned tomorrow morning for what will (hopefully) be a very short and uneventful collection thread. I really need some uneventful cars for a bit... Datsuncog
Okay then... messages have been exchanged, and deals have been dealt. This morning, I'm off to collect An Car. Hopefully. This time, planes will not be involved - unless something goes spectacularly wrong... It will not be very exciting, but that's ok - I'm not really feeling a need for serious thrill these days. Departure time is thirty minutes. Meaning I should probably go and get a shower... Amishtat, Dirk Diggler, mk2_craig and 6 others

Datsuncog
Well, the good news is that I was smart enough to grab an umbrella. The bad news is I didn't think to check it over first, as about a third of the spokes are bust. So it's kind of like having a large, damp rook hovering over my head, dripping on me. Also, mindful of the previous inter-Hibernian collection, I made sure to bring my sunglasses this time. Gloves might have been a better bet... Fingers = friz. Datsuncog
First stop achieved: Fun fact - despite everything running through the same DVLA office in Swansea, motorists in NI can't tax a newly purchased car online. A trek to a central Post Office is necessary. Relieved of £180, off I go again, to the next marker point... Datsuncog
Actual breakfast achieved: Also a replacement umbrella - which I've no doubt will be every bit as good* as its predecessor. Onwards! Datsuncog
Destination #2 arrived at: Not a huge choice of destinations in this wee country. Literally the only three options from this station. If you're looking to guess what I'm picking up, a subtle clue may be derived from some vintage items that I brought with me (other than a smashed umbrella, obvs): Dyslexic Viking, Split_Pin, GrumpiusMaximus and 4 others 6

Shirley Knott
I'm going to be presumptuous and start the guessing game.... Not Japanese after your recent tin worm disaster, but spashus and grown up? Is it something Swedish? Datsuncog
Datsuncog
Heh, I have mentioned Swedish before on here, haven't I - and I have had rather a bit of grief with Japanese motors over the past nine months or so. But you have to remember that I never, never learn. 🙃 Because I'm moving house soon, this car is also quite a bit smaller than the Rotback. Of course. When it was brand new (believed supplied by a main dealer round the corner from where I grew up) I was driving this... The new acquisition is roughly in a similar market segment - but has a smaller engine than the car I was piloting when I was 19... privatewire, Shirley Knott, Dyslexic Viking and 2 others
Datsuncog
Belfast skies... Next leg coming up - all change at Lanyon Place. Amishtat
I think I know what it is, not a bad choice if so. Datsuncog
Train has managed to be seven minutes late, despite the Northern Ireland rail network being significantly less extensive or complex than many model railway layouts... Still, these 4000 series CAF trainsets have passenger USB outlets, to distinguish them from the 3000 series which brought me in from Carrick, so at least I can top my phone up as I go... Datsuncog
Second breakfast: Poo count: anywhere between 1 and 5, possibly more. Rather stern note to self: desist from consuming leftover prawn stir-fry the night before travelling anywhere. I might have forgotten my gloves, but I did have some loperamide capsules with me. Otherwise this whole enterprise could have ended up a shitshow in rather more ways than one... 😬 tooSavvy, GrumpiusMaximus, Split_Pin and 1 other 2
Datsuncog
Lo! The invigorating vistas from the Costa Del North Down. Despite average house prices on the southern side of Belfast Lough being nearly double those of their northern equivalents, they still have to look across the water at us plebs. Including the delightful* coal burning power stations at Kilroot and Ballylumford. Not far to go now. Seller knows I'm on the way, and has apparently washed the car in readiness. Now that's more dedication than I can generally muster. But then, the car has been in his family from nearly new... Datsuncog
Arrival: Bit of a blast from the past. I used to commute from this station when I lived nearby, some 14 years ago. Datsuncog
So, we're officially a two-Toyota family now. February 2000 Corolla 1.3 Liftback. One family owned since it was a year old, and they seemed truly sad to see it go. A few giffer-dings here and there, but overall it's remarkably straight. Clean. Clean inside, too. Original ICE system, no less... And 111,000 miles backed up by old MOTs. I'd written a ton more but my post unfortunately got eaten, so I'll come back and elaborate later when I'm not on a mobile network. It's maybe not exactly the car I want - but it could be the car I need right now.
