Now a 2003 Volvo XC70 D5... Here we go again...

It only got 54mpg coming back a week later. I was on it's arse full of wine though and I wasn't sparing the horses.

I got flashed in France on the way there at an indicated 130mpg at 4am. I was bricking it, but never heard anything back.

I’ll have to double check in the morning but I’m deffo on for 550-600 miles to a tank. OBC said 600 miles plus. Haven’t officially worked it out and not had it long but it seems to be pretty good.
Yeah mine reckons those sort of figures for a full tank. I topped up from half to see what the MPG was looking like.

Maybe I'll let this tank run and see what mileage I get from it!

That’s pretty much exactly what mines doing. - both on the OBC and real MPG.

Well that's more than a little disappointing. I'd never trust the readout to be telling the truth but 11mpg is waaaay more than I was expecting.

One thing that is annoying me... And this may well be because I've not had a diesel for ages, but...

Does anyone else get that common-rail top end rustle from the engine intruding into the cabin? The engine sounds sweet, and this is also a feature of a friend's diesel Dacia Duster, but I find it really annoying! It's not loud, but it's there...

It's like I've got a midget under the bonnet constantly crinkling a crisp packet.

I can't say I notice it but then all my daily drivers have been dirty diesels. I have been working through a long list of rattles/buzzes from the engine bay though. It could be yours has similar ailments?

  • Engine top mounts (all three buggered)
  • Both vacuum engine mounts (had the popping when the oil filler cap was removed at idle)
  • Front lower torque mount (one bush completely missing so was metal on metal)
  • Replaced a missing engine cover bush (the hard plastic bit of the engine cover vibrating against the block)
  • Replaced a couple of the flimsy air filter box mounts which were broken
  • Repaired the mounting tab of the alloy air pipe running down the side of the engine (again vibrating against the block)
  • Reseated two injectors. Possibly still one more  needed.

I've spent a bit of time on YouTube listening to other D5s and I think it's just a dieselly thing. I can hear the same noise in the other videos, so I'm not going to worry too much.

Gave it a good bootful a couple of times today and although it's not hugely powerful it doesn't half give you a shove in the back. Interestingly the fuel economy seems better accelerating briskly up to speed and then holding it there.

The Volvo managed to blow another headlamp bulb last night. Funnily enough I’d noticed a set of brand new Osram Nightbreakers in the spare wheel well that the previous owner must have left, there. Duly fitted this morning, so we’ll see how long those last!

Off to pick up some trim restorer from Halfords now, so will be giving the car a good clean this afternoon!

I'm just back from a 100 mile round trip and even being totally open minded there's absolutely no noise other than the 5 cylinder rumble that I can hear. It's one of the quietest cars I've had to be honest.

I'm still torn. Every diesel I've had has had this top-end rustle - I think it annoys me more in this car, because of how refined it actually is. That said... I have discovered a pool of diesel between some of the injectors so there could be an issue there...?

There's no hard starting etc though and plenty of power.

Day off today, so thought I'd crack on with a couple of jobs on the Volvo. But first, a little jaunt for a photo:

Then I thought I'd crack in with taking the bumper off, to replace a seized headlamp wiper motor and a smashed fog lamp. Quite impressed with myself that I managed both jobs with no issues and it all works!

Yep, sounds like injector seals which could possibly be the source of your noise. SiRobb's videos on youtube show the process very well. Genuine Volvo injector clamp and sealing kits are the only way to go at £20 a set per injector. Bit of a  finger nipping faff changing the snap rings on the injectors but overall not a hard job if the offending injector isn't encased in black crap and pulls out easily.

I’ve managed to do a whoopsie on mine when reversing over a kerb so need to reattach my bumper. How painful was it?

It's really easy! It just slides / clicks into place. There are two bolts at the front that hold everything together, and where the bumper meets the wing it just slides on and holds it in place.

Slight update...

Had the oil changed the other day as, although it's only done about 2000 miles since it was changed by the previous owner, that was 12 months ago now. Thought it best to have it changed.

I've also ordered a new rear wiper assembly, as the plastic cover on the wiper arm of mine is cracked - cosmetically the car will be looking really good soon!

In the not so-good news, the gearbox gave me a massive slip on the way to work the other day, which is a tad worrisome! Until now it's been perfect. I checked the colour of the fluid and it's bright cherry red, so obviously it's had the fluid changed a few times recently - probably because the gearbox was playing up. I'll see how it goes, but it could be something as simple as the adaptions not being reset when the fluid was changed... Or I could need a new gearbox. It'll get whatever it needs, but for now I'll run it and see how it goes.

I did the full fluid change on mine before I used it properly doing the 'Gibbons' method. What came out was filthy and took bloody ages to do the '2 litres out, 2 litres in' thing. I read up about the adaptions and opinion seemed mixed about whether it's needed or if you just need to reset the fluid counter. One forum post had a link to Volvo technical notes saying doing the adaptions were only needed if replacing the solenoids, just a counter reset needed for a fluid change as it's an adaptive system so itll be constantly adjusting. That's all I did on mine and it seems to be OK. I think I may have had a slip too but I put it down to pissing around with the cruise control at the time (you'll have noticed the reset feature is a little rev happy). Fingers crossed that's all it was. I desperately want to like this car but it's my first auto and its only the autobox which I'm not yet convinced by.

Well no more slipping from the autobox - yay!

Just filled up after being very accelerator-happy over the last tank. 40mpg... Go figure...

It does seem that the more I use it the quieter its getting as well which is nice. When I had the oil changed I asked the mechanic what he thought of the engine noise - he thought it sounded great for a D5 so I'm satisfied all is well!

  • 1 month later...

I've now stuck a few thousand miles on this, so it's probably time for an update!

Good Stuff:

  • Goes well, and a comfortable cabin
  • Looks smart & presentable
  • Plenty of power for commuting / motorway work
  • Only things that physically don't work are both heated seats (control module or something?)

Bad Stuff:

  • Engine seems noisy in the cabin - I suspect some auxiliary system / vacuum leak?
  • Autobox likes the occasional slip - much better in geartronic mode
  • Small oil leak which leaves a very small patch every night (about the size of a 10p piece) right at the front of the car - intercooler?
  • Pulsy steering
  • Possibly a poor injector or two

I think my plan at the moment is to just keep running it. It drives well, tyres are wearing evenly and the lumpy running from cold, which I suspect is injector related, clears quickly after starting. Its last MOT was advisory-free, save for the significant oil leak which has now been rectified (crank seal). We'll see how it does at its next MOT in January, and at that point I might give it to the local specialist to just sort everything out. We'll see. The only exception to this will be a gearbox oil change in the not too distant future, to try and eke out as much life as I can from the gearbox.

Just been on holiday with it, so here's a photo of it looking lovely in Matlock:
