They've got CCTV that covers the car park, so tomorrow my tack is to be will be all nicey-nicey with them and ask if they might mind me looking through to see what went on.

Well no luck on finding the culprit. The legion we less than helpful even though I asked very nicely and insinuated I thought it was one of the contractors I had visiting me, but they were incredibly defensive.

 

Anyway... Volvo going in to the bodyshop tomorrow and decided to sod it and have the exterior made perfect. Why not?*

 

*Because it's a 15 year old Volvo and I'm insane.

Dunno, I assume some giffer from the British Legion (with whom I, regrettably, have to share my works car park with) has reversed into it. The car park is gated and I've not had any visitors, so it's got to be one of them or theirs.

 

As per they've not left a note or any details.

I think it must have been a Legion regular. I saw where all my contractors had their vehicles and I just can’t see how they would have hit my car where the damage is. A reversing pensioner parked opposite, however...

Been stuck on the A41 for a few hours this morning. Volvo looked right at home & I enjoyed a flask of coffee, a sandwich and some biscuits - it's actually been quite a lovely morning.

Unfortunately I’m falling into the trap I always do with cars. I seem unable to run cars as bangers because I get emotionally attached to the stupid things.

 

Therefore; by the end of this week I will have spent nigh on £400 on the sodding thing.

Gearbox fluid change, update & reset achieved. I’m up in Hull visiting the parents at the moment, so popped it in to a Volvo specialist while I’m here who had it all sorted in a couple of hours. He’s flushed it through, updated the software & reset all its learning ECU thingy.

 

Definitely drives better! He did say I might get the odd funny change while it re-learns everything, but he reckoned the old fluid wasn’t bad at all, but now was the right time to get it done.

I grew up in Ferriby & the parents still live there, so I’m here visiting!

 

Done 50 miles in the Volvo this afternoon and pleased to report that the gearbox work has transformed it. The drivetrain is SO smooth now.

Update time.

 

Volvo is doing alright. Haven't really fallen in love with it yet though. I've been working through the Volvo forums trying to figure out if all of the weak points have been attended to by the previous owner. I have gleaned that:

• PCV has most likely been done
• Clocks have been swapped for the newer ones with silver ring round the dials
• Throttle body looks to have been renewed

In addition, I have had the gearbox fluid changed and software reset, which is another worry less. All in all it's well sorted, but it's going through that bit in a car's life where it needs a bit of money spent before it can go shooting off towards 200k miles.

 

At the moment my main concern is the noises coming from the rear suspension. The nearside has been noisy since I got it, but has got worse. Had it into a few garages who couldn't find a lot wrong, and in the end settled on having the rear top mounts renewed - unfortunately it hasn't solved the noise. The offside if now becoming noisy and clattery. I firmly believe it is the shock absorbers, as if you bounce the car there's a loud 'sucking' sound as the car levels. Previously this noise has only come from the nearside, but now the offside has started doing it too. Most garages seem very reluctant to start pulling the rear end apart though.

 

Also got a slight knock from the front, when low speed manoeuvring and near full lock. If the wheels go over a modest bump it clonks at the front, but in normal day to day driving it's fine. I suspect top mounts at the front or drop links? Again, garage have had a look and can't find anything amiss. I'll get the rear sorted first and see how we go.

 

I think the fact it's got that dent in the rear quarter has taken the shine off this car for me - which is stupid and I need to get over it. I keep looking for 'nicer' examples, but trying to get something anywhere near the price I paid for this one with under 180k miles on is a tall order! In my head - with its current issues - this is a £500 car. But I think it's probably closer to a £1500 car that I just need to value a bit more, if that makes sense!

My S60 has been making clonks, groans and various other poltergeist noises from its front end for 15k. I've been assured by three separate (and trusted) mechanics that 'all is fine' and by one that 'it looks bloody tidy under there'.

That's what I'm being told.

 

But it's getting slowly but steadily worse at the rear & the nearside certainly rattles and clonks over every bump / pothole (despite trying to avoid them!). If I test drove a car that made these noises I'd be walking away!

 

I'm sure there's something brewing under there, in my case, but everything keeps getting ruled out: Stabiliser bars (no play), top mounts (replaced) etc... I'm not getting any funny tyre wear or anything though.

All did not end well.

It was left parked while I was at work and I came back to find the whole side of the car had been opened up - like a massive tin opened had driven past it. I suspect farm machinery or the back of a lorry's trailer etc...

Sold the car for peanuts to a guy off here (can't remember the name). Seems to have been MOT'd since then so it lives in somewhere.

Update!

New Volvo joins the fleet. This time it's a 2003 XC70 D5. Really tidy thing which was very cheap on account of an oil leak. It's the dreaded crank seal which means the gearbox has to come out, but my mechanic reckons a days labour which I'm quite happy with. It'll still be cheaper than the next cheapest available once I've paid out on getting it fixed.

It drives really well, with no nasty suspension noises, the engine seems really sweet & importantly the Aisin Warner gearbox seems perfect. Unfortunately the bits my mechanic needs for the job are not available through Volvo until 5th June due to Covid-related delays. Fair enough - we'll get there with it!

This is still waiting for the parts for the crank seal renewal to be available from Volvo, but in the meantime I've given it a good wash & polish, as well as giving the interior a good clean as well. It wears its miles really well inside:

There are a few cosmetic / minor issues on the outside such as a missing centre cap, smashed foglight (I'm guessing a stone was thrown up) and a seized headlamp wiper motor. 

Despite my mechanic saying the bumper would need to come off to renew the headlamp bulb, it was actually a very easy job without having to remove anything, so it's no longer a "one-eyed monster".

Really can't wait for this to be fit for daily use!

Try calling FRF Volvo in Swansea, they have a discount scheme for Volvo owners club members, I ordered a pair of engine mounts on Thursday lunchtime, they didn't have them in stock but did have them to my door by lunchtime the next day.

Given that I'm in Lincolnshire and they are in Swansea, that's pretty impressive!

Since the Volvo has been parked up, I've been trying to get through some niggly stuff before it is pressed into daily service. I currently have the following on order:

• Replacement front fog lamp (to replace the cracked one)
• Replacement front nearside headlamp wiper motor (to replace the seized one)
• New handbrake gaiter (current one is worn)

Today I've been trying to clear down the error messages on the dashboard. I had the dreaded 'Alarm Service' message, but this seems to have disappeared after changing the car's battery (I've not touched the alarm battery / sounder etc...). The alarm does work, so we'll see if it pops back up at some point. It was also telling me that there were multiple bulb failures. Initial inspection showed that everything apart from a headlight worked, but on further googling there are a lot of secondary bulbs at the back, and they all have to work. Now sorted!

 

Et voila... No warning messages!

Well the mechanic has the parts, so I'm just waiting for him to let me know when would be convenient for him to have the car back and sort the oil leak. Despite a sizeable patch of oil under the car, it hasn't lost enough to actually show a loss on the dipstick. I took it out shopping today, just to give it some sort of run and get some juice into the battery. It really does drive nicely although the ride is a touch crashy - nowhere near as bad as the V70 I had previously though!

Still can't wait for this to be in daily service.

Good news - I have the Volvo back. Seemed to be a bit of a theme with oil leaks, and a few other parts that were noted so quite a lot of work was done in the end. Overall the car is still cheaper than the next cheapest XC70 on Autotrader - still happy.

We're now error code free, with no leaks or obvious mechanical maladies. Filled the tank yesterday and it's estimating a range of 700 miles... I think that might be a bit optimistic, but anything over 400 will be better than my other cars (adjusted for tank capacity!).

Mini roadtrip today in the Volvo to meet up with Father. His 75 Tourer makes the Volvo look like a Tonka Toy.

It's settled at 46mpg for the moment on the OBD. 50mph send to be the sweet spot where you can keep the consumption figures over 70mpg, but at motorway speeds they seem to suffer a bit.

Had mine just over a week now and I think you’re right 50ish it will do mega MPG but even at 70 with the cruise set I got 59.8 on the way back from Burnley. Currently doing 45 locally!

Mine's not getting figures like those! The OBD has settled on 46mpg over a few hundred miles, but we'll see what the full picture is when I fill it up again!

Been running mine since 1st May but haven't had a chance to go on a longish run. Mixed driving gives 48-49 or 50-52 driven gently. I was hoping new tyres and proper wheel alignment (which was way way out) would have added another 1mpg but not seeing anything yet. I'll be brimming the tank at the next fill for a real world mpg calculation.

I filled up today to work out exactly what MPG I'm getting... Only over 280 miles so hardly conclusive, but only getting 38mpg.

I presume XC70, Geartronic & AWD to blame...

I’ll have to double check in the morning but I’m deffo on for 550-600 miles to a tank. OBC said 600 miles plus. Haven’t officially worked it out and not had it long but it seems to be pretty good.

My '55 v70 2.4d got 58mpg loaded up on a 800 mile trip to France. I filled up with 80 miles to go on a quarter of a tank. I reckon it would have done the 800 miles on one tank full.
