Apocryphally a BAOR squaddie stole one to drive home when he was denied leave/spent all his money on herfies/in receipt of a 'dear john'. I forget what the outcome of the dit was. It's probably recounted on ARRSE.

Hmmm. Thinking about this, I'd suggest saving your money and investing it in restoring and maintaining the growing fleet of awesome toys you have already and also put a bit away in the bank towards the next property. You may want to buy your own place again eventually and it's always good to be able to put down a decent deposit, to minimise the mortgage payments!  If and when you need to move the Stolly, which won't be very often or even that far, get a plant/agricultural machinery/rail vehicle moving services contractor to do the job for you. They will do it safely and efficiently and fully insured, at less cost to you than buying, maintaining, storing and running your own HGV to do the same.

Obviously it's your call at the end of the day, but you did ask for thoughts! :-)

True that would be the sensible option. And yeah I don't want all my cash tied up in trucks. Maybe a future purchase then....  😀

That Foden is epically awesome.

IIRC there's some serious issue with those huge 8x8 Fodens, something like them being too wide to comply with C&U regulations so they can't legitimately be civilian registered. There are a few that have been registered in the past but it seems they've been fudged in some way that isn't entirely legal so there's a massive can of worms just waiting to be opened there. The older Scammell/Leyland-DAF DROPS appear to be okay though so one of those might be a better bet but I'm no expert on these things.

Wouldn't surprise me - I know width was a big issue with the Stolly itself - so something even wider would likely be a headache!

Kind of how you can longer register a Stolly for road use as it is also too wide apparently.

I finally found that Truck magazine with the Roadrunner ‘scoop’:

Let me know if you want some photocopies of the article chucked in the post - or are you coming up to the FoD this weekend?

I was tempted to paraphrase Jaws when I read about the Stalwart - ‘You’re gonna need a bigger truck’ - but you probably don’t need any more encouragement!

Those HX flatbeds are really more designed for having kit lifted on and off them, like a normal flat wagon for general haulage. If you somehow managed to find tough enough ramps to drive a Stolly up on that bed, and found a way to strap it down, it's going to be extremely top-heavy and unstable. IMO you're better off going with a proper beavertail type wagon like someone suggested earlier in the thread, if you can find one that isn't totally shagged for cheap money.

Alternatively, if you want to do it really Autoshite-ly, how about an ERF B-series 8-legger with a Gardner 180? There's a recipe for going quite slowly 😁

Also, without doing any research at all because tired, a 2-axle HX with 9 ton on the back *might* be over the 18 ton limit for 2-axle trucks (regardless of axle weight capability). You'll be needing at least 3 axles.

Or just get a professional moving company to do it. There's plenty of them out there.

Ah, but when you're driving a 9 ton amphibious vehicle, you can do that...

Really? I would have thought that when trying to own and maintain a 40+ year old specialist military vehicle in need of both repair and modification, and people who understand and have experience with them are offering advice, the sensible thing to do would be to at least listen to them.

That entire thread reads like you putting your fingers in your ears and shouting LAA LAA LAA LAA over and over again.

Pretty much 😀 None of them cunts actually own a Stalwart so why the fuck would I care what they have to say? I am already chatting to an actual fellow Stolly owner who will be present the first time I actually attempt swimming.

Same with your home made lawnmower tale, you said I  wouldn't be be able to drive it..... I would love to able to prove you wrong 🙂

I already own and successfully maintain one 50 year old vehicle which is even rarer. The Stolly is just bigger, handily it happens to have a built in crane so it can do it's own lifting of heavy parts 😀

Why on earth would you want to prove me wrong?  That's remarkably childish.

I don't currently own an XUD.  Does that mean my experience of them is completely invalid?  I also don't currently own a Series Land-Rover.  Again, does that completely negate my experience?

You seem to have a very self-assured view of everything.

The 12 year old child in me wants to prove you wrong, the same child that made me buy a Stolly in the first place.

I do have a self assured view yes 😀My life is excellent at the moment, I have a job, friends, family, a bunch of cool vehicles that all work. I have the utmost confidence I will be able to maintain my Stolly perfectly. If I didn't think I could look after it I wouldn't have purchased it.
