Now for some unusual reason I actually have some wisdom to impart despite never owning a W140. A close friend has one, he also churns through cars at HMC rates but so far he's held onto it. Perhaps there is a cure?

I believe there are two different tailgates. I think one has angular corners on the lower edge and the other has radius corners.

Edit: change that to pointless wisdom. Your car has radius corners too by the looks of it.

Well without a plan i sold the xk8, and the fiat 500 twin air is waiting for parts to arrive to fix a coolant leak. Hence i have been using the samara - which is no hardship as the heater is excellent.

But also i have done a buy. Cheaper than w126s and simpler than w220s, w140s are something ive been back to a couple of times.

This s320 has been in the same family for 20 years, and has some latvian gangster spec panel damage…

Pre-fl like my 500SEL has squared off corners, taillights and reflector band are all different. Facelift like this has the rounded ones.

Oooh I do like this shape of S-Class.

On my walk to school in the late 90s there was one in a driveway keeping a W123 company. Over time the W123 became more and more mossy and then one day disappeared. By the time I was in 6th form (about 2002 IIRC) it was time for the S-class to go full algael as a newer E-class replaced it.

Its here, aside from the panel damage its clearly been loved and looked after, and drives wonderfully.

I have two theories:
(1) Hit job.
Vinny Jones lookalike reversed into 'the mark' at 30mph  making a person sandwich between bootlid and Bad Man's Black 4x4 (e.g. Range Rover for BBC, G-Wagen if Netflix).
If you squint sideways, in a bad light whilst munching an onion you can see the dent (top right of the big dent) that matches Bad Man's shoulder holster.

(2) Stamford Hill parking dent.

That's a fairly faithful recreation of Tavi on market day.

That looks absolutely sensational @HMC, can we have a health report please?

Also fun options count eg pop up bumper markers for parking...

Replace the door and bootlid with a matching color one and paint the bonnet and this will be a fantastic car! I test drove a very cheap S280 a year ago and was surprised how well it still went despite being the base engine in a very heavy car, the extra 40 horses in this one should make a decent difference.

Lovely, lovely old thing. You can't beat this era of Mercs. Proper brick shithouse vibes. I seem to remember watching Punchson test driving one of these when they were new and being astounded at the features, massaging seats and all. Not sure if TADT.

Me too!!!

And that one came up, and all of a sudden I was pricing up s/h boot lids 🤣

Good to see it here - maybe I'll get a go in it after all...

On an N-reg, it won't have that

Mr Chowdhury rarely had rear passengers- so much so that the rear doors eventually became stuck.  My gut feeling after a google surf was that a small spring loaded connector had got gummed up with old grease through lack of use rather than a failure of any kind, in the lock mechanism internal to the door, on each side.

This is made more complex by the door being jammed- making access difficult to say the least  without destroying things. i ended up drilling a few (hidden) holes and managed to sort it…

so its back to being a 4 door saloon again..

Car door surgery

Sounds like the basis for a TV show.

'Car Door Surgery' - fronted by whichever presenter the BBC have not sacked yet.

Or 'Back Door Surgery' - but that would be on a pay-to-view channel.

My W140 had the same issue on one of the rear doors, especially when it was cold outside and the grease even less greasy. I managed to get the door card off just enough to spray the hell out of the lock mechanism. That fortunately did the trick. I haven't opened that door in the last 2 years so crossing my fingers that its still working...

The WAFT on that.

Spotted this for sale a few days ago, I won't lie the crinkly boot did put me off, is it on the register?

Clearly double-skinned - but with the rear skin out it might well beat out to something fillable rather than replacing it?

Or maybe not...
