2006 RX8 project - 55K/new clutch/needs brakes/cosmetics. FREE (but you can pay for some parts if you want)

There's a thread for it which ended up in the Modern Shite area.

2006 RX8, 192/black leather/Bose. Two keys, some history, 55,000 miles, new clutch recently, new plugs and leads (not needed for running, it ran well, but was a service item), new battery (higher-end Halfords with warranty, 4 months old, cost about £90 with trade card!). Problems are: Front brakes seized, part stripped/removed, one caliper has piston very firmly jammed. Rear brakes sticky. ARB drop link popped. Wheel arch liner removed. Light surface rust on floor (some underseal stripped) and around mounts for liner, not serious. Some paint removed from front wing lip to investigate bubbling rust.

It will roll but has no calipers fitted at the front. It starts and drives but hasn't been on the road since April, as the sticking caliper meant it was taken off the road before MoT expired, then life got in the way.

Ideal track toy, they're quite expensive to insure and tax - another reason the mojo departed, losing half my work and then facing £100/month on those two items.

Having done my best to put you off - I paid £350. It comes with £100/worth of plugs and leads (more by UK prices), and £35 of new pistons and seals to rebuild the calipers. It will need pads, they were screwed, and discs. If you want to make it driveable here you can bring a set of calipers, fit and bleed them through here.

I'd like it to go fast. Want the lift it's been occupying free to work on the silver SLK, and want the money as all the stress lately means I've put a deposit on a new, warranted vehicle for work/life stuff. Maybe you don't want to spend £350 on an RX8...

but £5?

Pictures can be found in the appropriate thread until I edit this to have some.

Before the caliper jammed it was bloody awesome to drive. These are great cars.

(Also: Yes, I could keep the battery and unfitted NGK leads - it has the new plugs fitted, the leads were fiddly for me to fit during eye operations - and I'll take £250 for it in that situation. Likewise I might consider breaking it, but it'd be a shame given the rate these are being scrapped at...)

I can reassemble the brakes - I'd finish rebuilding them if I didn't have to invest in some way of holding the bastard caliper still while trying to force the piston out - but I don't disagree; this is offered for people who do disagree and will think it horrific if I carve the bloody thing up.

Because that's pretty much where I am with it. Remove seats, no reserve auction for those, same for lights and wheels, keep the battery, sell the doors and bonnet, the lights, offer the engine and gearbox together, then get a cutting wheel and remove the car in handy bite-size chunks.

Hell, I feel that way about the HGF Sera and that drives and has the parts to fix. The month I've had, fire on everything seems like the best solution :D

Aye, it would be a real shame to scrap a runner - most of them are binned due to engine problems, which I can understand as not many people want to be messing with rebuilds and "specialists" offering exchanges on a sub 2000 car.

Unscrewing the end of a grease gun nozzle usually reveals a male thread the same size as brake hose fittings. Screw it into the caliper and pump it full of grease - even the cheapest chinese grease gun can create phenominal pressure like this - and the stuck piston will usually come out fine.

If I were closer etc etc, usual excuses apply..... but my latest failure at long distance collection has left a sour taste in the mouth.

If you're really into them then a rebuild makes sense if you're getting it done from a well renowned specialist, I have my red one in at RotaryRevs at present but I wouldn't go anywhere else. That said, there are loads about, I almost bought one last week for £500 running just for some bits for my red one, you could have made it back and more just breaking it. If you do decide to go down that path let me know as there may be one or two bits I could use for my red one.

If you need any bits that are worth the effort in terms of putting money back that I've spent on the new car's deposit, I'm all ears ;)

Ah, I did not know this - I knew about the grease gun trick but hadn't tried as I'd assumed it needed some adaptors. Will go poke it. I haven't chucked away the old pads yet so I could probably get it rolling if this works.

IT FITS! But my grease gun was empty. ARGH.

FWIW, I think if these cost the same to tax and insure as any other banger, people would be rapidly consuming the surviving models.

This is the killer, I had one for a while and loved it. I keep coming back on here and then persuading myself not to go for it, calipers are expensive if the ones on can't be saved but its the tax that's a killer. I would want it as a summer plaything but £50 a month is a nightmare. BUT I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't had one, they are amazing cars and everyone should own a rotary at least once in their lives. At £350 it's a great car for the money, in ten years time we will look back in amazement at how cheap they were.

It's why I'm suggesting it's an amusing track toy.

Calipers aren't expensive. Refurbs are under £130, I've seen some for £75-90 but don't know what the quality is like. I just don't want to spend ANY more money on this, or time :)

The car is an utter bargain, there is 100% no doubt on that, but £250 for the calipers makes it a £600 car, and the possibility of it needing trailering. I know it's a ball ache but if you could get that sorted so it's driveable, even if you stick £100 on the price, would make it sell I think. I know I would struggle to resist.

That said I am amazed it's still here, I saw it and thought it would go in under an hour. When you look at what these cars are like when sorted I don't think you could get anything close for the money, perhaps a mk2 MX5 would come close.

If it does come to a Roffle I will have a ticket please.

It's got calipers. One of them is dismantled. One needs the piston extracting. I have a rebuild kit including new pistons. If I have an indication that someone will actually take the thing away, that'll motivate me to prod it more, but I won't be painting the surface rust exposed bits - it'll still be a project, just one that can be driven to an MoT.

You could fill the grease gun with brake fluid....even engine oil, I suppose....It will still create the same pressures.

I use a grease gun as a basic hydrolastic pump with antifreeze as the fluid.

Those look right.

Near Lutterworth. LE17, J20 of the M1 basically.

If you want to bring some brake fluid and brake pads (£26 for Brembo off Amazon) then it'd take about 40 minutes to put the calipers on and bleed, I have a pressure bleeding system.

Piston extracted with old ATF in the grease gun, easy as anything. Now to clean old calipers up and rebuild tomorrow.

(Of course, now I have a grease gun full of horrible ATF to deal with...) )

Asking price remains £250 if I reassemble the brakes. If you want in on that PM me, you can add £26 to have new Brembo front pads fitted.

Richard,

Would love the car, but the Tax and Insurance cost are putting me off,  however if I won the car in a raffle............ Then its a free car right :)

Not sure on the man maths, but would £6 a ticket cover you to include battery, leads and pads etc.

If the brakes are "working" would defo have two  (28 & 44) for the full monty/package (price of ticket adjusted accordingly)

Cheers

I'd originally gone for £6 ticket including bits apart from the new pads. Have been 'irked' by non-payers on the Smart roffle, but this is entirely up for roffle (as the ad says) if there's demand.

Compromise. £5/ticket. Battery available for £50 if wanted (but to be fair the one in it is fine, it's just slightly too tall to fit the plastic cover - it didn't need a new battery, I just got carried away wanting to make it right). Brakes will be reassmbled assuming cleanup and refit of pistons is okay.

You have far more time to throw at this than I, and I appreciate your taking it :D I should put some new pics up to show where the paint has been removed from the OSF arch to see what the rust was like. Now stylishly black and blue-ish.
