It's grim up north....tales from the Primate House

There was actually a second dead red VAG offering relocated to the workshop yesterday too…

E91D78E3-E88A-435B-B6BE-AB9A17B528AD.jpeg

I’ve only driven it once when Ceri dropped it off last year, whereupon I drive it down to the barn where it then cut out and refused to restart.

I thought it was about time to drag it over to the workshop whilst having a tidy and give it a bit of a fettle. It’s the first time I’ve seen underneath…it failed it’s last test on various bits of welding and other odds and ends. It’s actually pretty solid underneath…just three small bits required on the jacking points but otherwise it’s quite sound under there.

That leads me to my next dilemma…do I just sort out the bits for a test, deal with the atrocious lacquer peel and sell it on as the base model Golf Driver that it is or revert to my original plan and drop a more interesting engine in.

If the latter, do we go for the ubiquitous 1.8 20v turbo or the equally reliable old 1.9 tdi and a nice remap?

I love the old MX5 (and more specifically the gorgeous exhaust note) but it’s not the most comfortable thing to drive to and from autotesting. A nice mk2 with a 180hp engine and a fruity exhaust would be equally entertaining and a lot more practical to boot… 🤔

All thoughts welcome.

By the way, apart from getting rid of the alarm service required message on the dash, the new alarm module has made bugger all difference to the current drain on the C70.

The only other obvious lead is the roof control module which isn’t showing any communication with the main CEM and the associated lack of roof operations. This is also a common source of flat batteries but at £175 for a second hand module, it’d be nice to know for sure it’s the actual unit itself and not the can bus wiring to it that’s fubarred.

Anyone got a good spare module I can borrow? 😂

Yep, parked up awaiting the fitment of some uprated shocks and springs that have been sat in the stock room for far too long followed by a visit to my MOT man for official affirmation of its overall excellent* condition underneath. I bet it comes out with fewer advisories than its last test at ATS…. 🤞

Pre-PD is your best choice honestly. So you'd want either a 90hp AGR/ALH or the 110hp AHF/ASV according to t'interwebs if you plan on stealing from a Mk4 Golf.

Being built like a small cathedral Id be making the Golf more interesting to drive as something that would likely be more comfy to hoon about in.

That said Ive just bought a small tin scrotal sac. So I cant really talk can I?

My thoughts exactly. I love the 1.8t engine and can only imagine how much fun it’d be in something approx half the weight of the A3

So then…the red & dead A3.

A little bit of an anti climax to be honest. The water pump and cambelt kit arrived, I found my VAG timing tools to time it up, stuck the belt on, turned the key and…..

..…success!! Fired up straight away, ticking over beautifully.

I feel elated and a bit shit in equal measures. Happy obviously because it’s been a fairly easy repair but also annoyed that it was effectively written off when it wasn’t as terminal as it could have been.

To be honest, I can’t believe it didn’t do more damage when it failed. Effectively, the water pump seized completely when it was being cranked and the belt stalled the engine turnover. If it had actually fired up properly, there’s no doubt it would have stripped some teeth then valve and piston intercourse would have occurred and it would have been a lot worse.

Anyway, it’s going to get an oil service and a good valeting tomorrow before commencing daily service with MrsNM next week.

Other small jobs required include removal of the stuck CD from the head unit, replacement of the black trim behind the passenger door glass and re-lacquering of the boot spoiler. It also needs the drivers door lock looking at as it will lock on the remote but not unlock. One day, I’ll buy something VAG with a fully working compliment of door locks. Although probably not.

Today’s job was a spot of lacquer replacement.

First up, mask it off and attack with a scotchbrite pad…

Then mix up some 2k…

Add aforementioned 2k to spoiler…

That’ll do, donkey…

Had to go out this afternoon so it’s currently sat up in the air overnight with the sump plug out, awaiting a new filter and the proper VW 507 oil in the morning.

Oh yes, I also found a dried up tube of tiger seal in the back of the cupboard so I cut it open and got enough out to reattach the drivers door trim that had detached itself, followed by 45 minutes of removing excess tiger seal from various areas of the workshop and my body with thinners.

Tomorrows exciting instalment will be a good vacuum of the carpets, some snow foam and the attachment of some sticky back plastic to the nearside b pillar. Bet you can’t wait….

I’m not sure she’d want this one. Most of the lacquer has long gone from the other side and roof, it needs a tailgate, the bonnet painting and a bit of welding here and there.  Oh yes, it doesn’t currently start either, though I reckon that’s down to a blocked up jet in the carb. It’s definitely a project…the interior is mint though…

No idea to be honest…once I’ve got it roadworthy, I’ll see how much I’ve got in it and decide then whether to move it on as is or continue with an interesting engine conversion.

Ok…what you’ve all been waiting for*, Jaaag update time.

First of all, let’s plug the scanner in and see what’s what…

Could be worse…at least the phone module seems ok. Actually, most of them are related to low battery and once cleared, have not returned 😂

Up in the air and the general consensus is it’s a good, solid car. The rear brake pipes that looked a bit crusty on the POs pics are actually pretty solid and just covered with road muck. The subframes front and rear are solid and just need a good wire brush and repaint and everything else is very clean and solid…

It really is like new on the sills, jacking points etc…very clean indeed for a 18 year old car.

The ZF transmission is as dry as a bone…there is a fair old oil leak but it’s completely clean above the sump line and the oil on the gearbox is what’s been thrown back from the leaky sump gasket…

Otherwise, it’s just random bits of trim underneath that need new fasteners. The nearside front fog light was missing it’s bolts…two new ones and it’s nice and secure now…

One of the rear exhaust shields was making a bid for freedom so that’s been fettled…

The handling is a bit twitchy at speed but all the wheels and tyres are perfectly balanced. The steering wheel however is 20 degrees out and the rear track control arms have both been replaced so I’m pretty confident that a full four wheel alignment will sort that out…

Other than that, the only issues I can find are a dead key fob and a (very slight) bit of corrosion on two door bottoms…

I’m going to replace the front track rod ends next week then get a full alignment done which will hopefully sort out the wayward ride, then it’ll be doing a niggle list to sort out all its little issues. Not sure what it’s long term future is on the fleet as I’ve another barge coming in this weekend but I’m really glad I jumped in to rescue it as it’s fundamentally a very straight and original car.

Oh yes. The so called specialist who tried to make it out to be dangerous and beyond economical repair really deserve to be shut down 🤬

More to follow once it’s been in for alignment.

Sorry about the foglight screws - I don't know where they went! They were T27s IIRC.

There's one brake pipe that I was concerned about but it's visible from above - and not concerned concerned, just didn't like the look of it - the one that runs across the front along the slam panel, so I saw it when changing the radiator. Any traces of ATF may be the small amount of spill when I swapped the rad, also.

You've got the space and the gear so I hope this does come together at last - if I'd had the facilities I used to it would not have gone to the roffle or been unrepaired for so long! Nice to see under it properly!

What about the air suspension light?

I will feel a bit daft if all it needs is an alignment, which is exactly what my local garage tolds me it needed to sort the ride.

It definitely has a coolant leak, interested to know if it is the water pump.

There’s two separate issues, I believe.

The slightly wayward handling is definitely down to the alignment, there’s no doubt about that.

Regarding the light, there is some sort of issue with the nearside front…I haven’t really looked into it much more at the moment but I think the noise is down to a worn ball joint…it’s too severe when going over a bad pot hole to be the pump which seems to be pretty well mounted. There is however occasional evidence of an air leak from that corner which may or may not occur with the occasional random warning light.

TL:DR it’s got a few minor issues which will be sorted and documented on here.

Now off to deliver and collect something else…

As mentioned on the collection thread, the knock on the front is down to a knackered ball joint on the upper wishbone. A new one was delivered yesterday morning but to fit it, the shock needs to come out to make room for the bolts to be removed and it was about this time I realised that one crucial omission in my tool box was a T60 impact bit.

Having ordered a set yesterday teatime for prime delivery today, the delivery time kept getting put back…it eventually arrived around 16.30 by which time I’d decided it was time to come home so the Jaaaaag can wait until tomorrow now to be rebuilt.

In the meantime, @sims00messaged me to let me know he’d very kindly picked up a spare set of 124 front wings offered up last night by @Peter C so I decided to dig out the Benz from its hiding place in the corner and make a start on getting it test ready…

CA22A308-8AE2-46F9-8CC0-856BDA2F1346.jpeg

When I first got it, it was a non runner…this transpired to be due to a full complement of furry fuse contacts! I originally cleaned up the one for the fuel pump at which point it fired straight up…I then got distracted by ordering up various NOS service bits from Amazon and ECP that were on clearance and sorting out the exhaust manifold blow by removing it and getting it refaced by my local engineering shop.

Since then, it got stuck in the corner and ignored until today when I found myself with a bit of spare time. I’ve finished cleaning up the fuse box and now everything works once more…even the sunroof and the period Hitachi tape deck! A few of the fuses are knackered so a complete new set is on the way at which point I reckon it won’t be far off ready for it’s first MOT for many years. It’s only covered 87k miles from new and is remarkably solid underneath so with a bit of luck, it may well be back on the road before much longer 🤞

Do you ever start something and wish you hadn’t? 😂😂

Following the FiLs fancy of my Jag, I’m taking back the CLK I gave him last year to use and as someone on here has expressed an interest on a deal with it, I decided to get it in the garage and give it a once over pending a new MOT on it as it runs out in a couple of months.

The only issues I could find were a bit of coolant staining around the water pump pulley and some play in the NS track rod end so bits were ordered.

The pump was indeed as rough as a badgers arse when the 20 foot auxiliary belt was finally removed so that was replaced for a nice new shiny one.

The track rod end? Not quite as straight forward unfortunately. The fun started with removing the wheel bolts…three were ridiculously tight and twi actually snapped off….joy! 🤬🤬

I thought I’d better check the other side and sure enough, one was seized completely so what started off to be a quick small job rapidly escalated as my OCD hates the thought of anything I sell not being right.

Today was spent replacing both front hubs and bearing assemblies and back plates (which had rotted away and allowed all the road crap to be chucked all over the exposed thread ends) along with new discs and pads for good measure!

As per the previous post, this is due to be delivered to its new keeper shortly and it’s replacement collected.

It actually should have occurred a hour ago but one of my customers rung me just after lunch to ask if they could call in to drop their car with me at teatime.

As a result, car swappage will now involve a stop off at Costco to spend more money as the Mrs will have finished work by the time I leave… 🤔
