Learning to rebuild engines - where to start?

The veg burning Yanmar (clone) L100 air cooled single cylinder 400cc diesel in my motorbike could do with a rebuild/rebore.    Curently 5 minutes  running sprays 500ml ofengine oil on the garage wall.  The cylinder is cast with  part of the crankcase then liner pressed so no whipping the barrel off, The workshop manual is straight forward and even gives measurements for acceptable baring and bore ware.

Why rebuild it properly?

Learning to measure the wear etc is the important part. You can sling it back together with old gaskets, bearings etc for the experience of building a lump from scratch.

For me, the rebuilding it properly and hearing it run would be the confidence builder for next time. If you just slung it back together there'd always be that nagging doubt...

The only engines I have rebuilt have been 2 stroke motorbike engines, after spectacular failures to proceed.

an RD350LC being the one I'm most proud of. I wish I'd not sold it in 1988.

With cars, there's usually a scrap yard full of engines, especially from specialists.

I know with our fleet, it would be easy enough to find a standard low mileage engine for less than the cost of the gaskets and bolts (probably)

I have replaced Spitfire 1300, Polo 1.0, and CalibrE 2.0SEH in the past.

If I were building a track day car I might consider building a tuned engine. Like a Supercharged 1.6 MX5 Mk1. But CBA

Is that one of those Enfield based things ?

id say take a free engine and take it apart and re assemble for the fun of it

all the talk of proper rebuilds will soon get tired when you price up machine work and start finding all the parts to do a proper job , then youre stuck with an ametuer rebuild no one in the right mind would pay top money for

i have a free rotary petrol mower, it is in north devon but my bro lives near Alverstoke so we might be able to relay it to you.

the motor still turns and ran, the mower is otherwise fucked. learn all about cranks, pistons and stuff for nowt

dug it out, old grass box protecting it from the weather

Bloodlyhell ,that's awfull. Well done .

Enfield might have been a Robin engine ?

Mine now looks much worse then in that video (postcards available).

There are several different Enfield diesels and Robin is one but this is probably the best "quality",

there's a UK company making some as well and another  http://www.pricepartmotorcycles.co.uk/ourshop/cat_314298-Diesel-Engine-and-Conversion-Parts.html      selling   all the bits to bugger up your own bike,

Honda CBR125 repsol CBR 125 learner legal spares or repairs project bargain

This bike was in everyday use until a week or so ago. It was running fine until it made a bit of a clatter and came to a stop. I have not stripped it as i don't have the time to do so. I have taken the spark plug out and the end of it is mullered so i assume that the cam chain tensioner has backed off causing piston/ valve damage but this is a guess judging by what i have seen. Its best to bid, assuming that you will need to source a new engine. If you end up just rebuilding the top end then that's a bonus. An engine can be purchased from ebay for as little as £200 making this a very cheap CBR125.

A perfect project?

This has been an ambition of mine for years, i never seem to have the time and skill is something thats stopping me quite a lot! I suggested it to the wife a couple of days ago, something i could do with my son, he's only 9 but by the time I'm ready to do it he'll be about 20, (hopefully do it next year!) I have a selection of three cars to strip and play with but I'll probably do the 948 Herald. would be amazing to get it back on the raod, it's been untaxed for 30 years!
