The last year for 205's in the UK was 1996. The back panel changed in '93. The range was odd, offering a myriad of models, a lot of them seemingly conflicting. The GR was reasonably mid range, but could be had with either the 1360cc engine - for the lifespan of the model, or the 1124cc engine for 1990-1991 model year only. In the 5drs only the GR or GT came with the 1360cc engine (GR - single choke carb. GT - twin choke carb), anything higher - including autos came with the 1580cc. Lower - with the 1124cc or 954cc.Really early ones had the 'Lay back and Die' engines carried over from the Visa/104/LNA/R14, they whine like mad as the gears are in the sump, Think these stopped in '84/5 when the TU engines started.The badge designation generally means the bodystyle and spec, so three doors were 'X' i.e. XE XL XR XS. Five doors 'G' GE GL GR GT. Exceot the GTi and AutoI need to get out more..... :shock::D:shock:

Yeah, they seemed to make a bewildering array of models. The one I had seemingly DOES NOT COMPUTE when you ask the 'experts': I had a 1991 registered 205 'Trio S' 1.1 which afforded jazzy seats and green seatbelts, but came with zero luxury and a 4-speed gearbox (this is the bit that foxes people). Belting little car that was, absolute hoot to drive. Only sold it when I started driving more motorway miles. Oh and Mrs_Pog hated it, due to the manual choke....

Yeah, the proper French spec Rallye model had twin Solexes on the 1360 cc TU lump. The Rallye we got was a stripped out special edition based on a UK spec XS. I keep telling my mate Jack this as he's got an example of the latter, but he won't have it.You also get the odd converted Mi 16 engined 205 GTi running twin Weber or Dellorto 45s, the misabs are quite easy to get.What I didn't know until recently is that you could buy OEM Mi 16 engined 205 and 309 GTIs in France. They were known as GTi 16s and they were built for touring car homologation (well, the 309s were).

The French spec Rallye had a bored out 1124cc (to 1294cc) TU engine with twin weber carbs. Giving 102bhp.As you say the UK did get the 1360cc engine, with 75bhp.1000 were produced for Germany with the 1.9 engine from the GTi, but the extra weight makes them not as popular.Can I remove my anorack now? :lol:

The UK GT did come with twin carbs, as i nabber a pair of solexes off one in the scrappy many moons ago.I also must profess my 205 love, i've got the ex reallyloud / Ratdat '84 1.1GL 5 door, and it's a proper hoot. The comfiest seats ever, and the ride is teriffic. :)

yup thats the ones i think ive got some lying in the garage aswell :roll: but they where off a late xs which i broke to fit the engine in my samba note the heart shaped plastic intake a dead giveaway

Ah, the Lay back and die engines - XY? - that came from the Samba to the 205 had that set up (80bhp). The later TU's had the Solex twinchoke (85bhp).*Passes anorack on* :lol:

lay back and die engine i wonder how they got that name as the one above had done 165k before being fitted to the Xer,have you ever tried to kill one crickey it took some punishment on the track it was redlined in 2nd and 3rd for the 3 years it was in the samba :wink:

It was a name that they were given in a citroen specialist I worked in, I think because they were generally a pig to work on, you had to pull the engine to do any headwork, and setting the valve clearances meant looking like you were being eaten by the car.

That's why the valve clearances in mine still need doing!!! GR8 4 nutting the bulkhead!

the engine is a dodle to remove though and i would have thought the quickest option

Look at this 'pizza delivery spec' 106 van, it's well nice, much better than your average van chod. I could see myself blezzing about with this, my stinky blind dog sticking his head out of the window. Much more stylish than my current van, which is PEZ

72 degress to the vertical IIRC.

- also the same set up on the painfully shite pre TU 1.4 BX engine with Mini style gearbox/ sump combo complete with whiney transfer 'box..this engine arrangement is the cutting edge of shite

This is ridiculous, if I could set myself up in France and transport all this stuff over to the UK, I'd make a fortune. I even did French at school! Sadly I spent the lessons drawing in my book margins and covertly reading Sega Saturn magazine, so all I can say is "un, deux, trois" and "pommes frites". Great if I want to buy anything up to three portions of chips, not so great if I want to negotiate the purchase of a Tagora diesel.
