85 Talbot alpine Rapier

Seems logical as it does have rear speakers. I’ve seen switches like that in Fords but its usually near the driver.  I find the switches in the car quite odd but then I'm very unfamiliar with French shite.  Took me a while to work out that you have to rotate the indicator stalk to use the headlights.

its definanly going to live again im looking forward to getting it on the road.  i shall definatly be joining the club, thanks for the info on the mirrors i was struggling to find any really good pictures of what they should look like as their is nothing left of mine.

 

There are three different 'makes' of mirrors used. Dynaparts, Magnatex & Britax. All three are very similar. Pics attached of Magnatex and Dynaparts. Also used on the Solara, Horizon and Sunbeam. No idea why they are all uploaded upside down, sorry.

thanks for the pictures and the info i shall keep an eye out for some. ive got some early peugeot 309 ones ordered to see if i can mod them to fit temporarily.

Evening all

 

i have mostly been sourcing parts ive got pretty much everything to rebuild the brakes new brake hoses, wheel cylinders and pads i also managed to get a pair of refurbished calipers for it aswell as some engine service stuff.

today i took the drivers side arch liner off just to check behind it and was pleasantly surprised to find it was like new behind so i gave the inner arch and a good clean and was impressed how well it came up , i also treated the rust spots on the wing.

Was going to comment that IIRC the Horizon mirrors are identical fit. The Nearside mirror in particular is quite hard to find, as many of these only had an offside mirror, the nearside one being a cost option on lower models. When I had my string of Horizons about 20 years ago, I found a nearside mirror (with interior winders for adjustment!! luxuree!! no winding down the window and reaching outside for me!) in a breakers, and then swapped it from car to car to car over the next 4 or 5 Horizons as none of them came with one fitted.

 

I *might* even still have it somewhere. I will looook.

Great find, and one of the last ones as well. History looks strange - tax was cancelled early July, but there's no MOT history online? Low owners too; looks to be a decent starting point :)

 

I suspect its been on a sorn, then transferred into trade, that would explain that?  looks ace :)

evening all

 

seriously long time no update, i still have the car ive been doing little bits and pieces when i can find the time. i managed to get the front brakes all rebuilt and now it stops pretty well, i managed to find a solution to the wing mirrors, i found early peugeot 309 wing mirrors will fit with some  modification and look pretty in keeping. and i think it only cost me 20 quid for a pair of brand new lucas ones.

one problem this car had was the gear change was like stirring coal, i found the linkage was totally worn out. this car has the be1 peuegot gearbox i found a company online that sold a linkage kit for 205 gti with a bit of modification this fits perfectly on the talbot and now the gear linkage is really tight.

 

one thing i did was clean the front of the engine as had about 2 inchs of oil covering it and now it looks abit better i also gave the alternator a good clean.

i replaced the inlet manifold gasket as it was having some weird running issues.

i also found some nos tailgate gas struts.

one issue i had when i was was moving the car around was the steering wheel had started to disintegrate, it went all sticky and crumbly in places, i couldnt find a replacement standard steering wheel but beacuse the steering column is from peugeot 309 i manged to get a leather 205 gti steering wheel for a really good price and fitted that which is much nicer to use.

i  started on repairing the rust in the passanger rear sill end, it had been  plated before and was looking rather crumbly.

crunchy, so at work i made up some new outer sill pieces and a new strengthener piece.

with those made i started to repair the inner sill .i also bead welded the nut for the rear subrame on as ive heard these can spin out if you try to undo them .

Morning all

 

a little more progress has been made on this triplerich popped over one weekend and had a look at the non functioning rear wiper after stipping it down it became pretty obvious why it wasnt working.

its been full of water for some time rich gave it his best but it wasnt going to live. i  thought my chances of finding a replacement would be zero but i remembered i bought a new old stock trico rear wash wipe kit about 4 years ago that fits a few cars and one happens to be the talbot alpine so that kit shall be used.

at the same time i remembered i had got a smiths fuel computer so at some point we shall fit that aswell.

i also managed to do a bit more welding to the passanger rear wheel arch and door step.

Great to see an Alpine. My grandfather had an early one from new, base spec 1300 but nevertheless badged GL. RRM 948R. One of the best cars he had. He kept it four years and then inexplicably replaced it with a Fiesta1.1. The Alpine then did service as a minicab around Penrith. Hope it all goes well for you.

Time for a thread resurrection!! with the lockdown I’ve had some more time on my hands to remember I had this, id be lying if id said I had done anything to it in just over a year about the only thing that happened was I moved it when I sold my calibra.so I decided I should probably take a look at it now my brother wanted to have a go at welding it as he has never done any welding and this would be some good practice. I wasn’t planning on this so didn’t bring home any of my equipment from work so we made do with the stuff I had in the garage which isn’t much.  their was two large holes in the rear inner tubs that he welded up.

the top one was his first attempt and overall I think he did very well for his first attempt at welding with the not very good welder I have here at home it only really has two settings doesn’t weld anything or so hot everything melts, but with those done he moved on to some smaller holes in the tubs and under the rear seat.

with those done I gave him a hand to fix the hole in the passenger chassis leg  and b post.

with those done that was pretty much all the holes that would fail an mot.so I went on to finish tidying the repair I did to the driver rear sill some time ago.

looking much better I did paint the sill with some silver paint that is close to the original and then  game it a cote of lacquer but didn’t take a picture of it. I also made an attempt to tidy up the drivers rear wheel arch now the rear section of the arch by the filler cap is completely rotten the last owner looks to have made a section out of plastic and filler now I have two new wheel arch panels to go on but I didn’t want to do it with  the welder I have here I also have no air tools here so I ground back the worst of it put some rust treat on it and re skimmed it with filler.

now I really don’t like doing stuff like that but it looks a lot better and should hold it back for a while I also did the other side as well which is in far better shape.

I also re stone guarded the passenger sill and painted it too.

with that done it looks much better now I had to remove the tow bar as every time I’ve walked past the back of the car I’ve hit my leg on it which was annoying also I had discovered it was rotten when I was looking underneath at something else so off it came.

to my amazement all the bolts came undone really easy which was nice. while that was off I cleaned up the spare wheel mount bolt and repaired the stripped thread on the end witch I believe is a safety.

I also painted the interior door handles as they were really badly faded and bugging me.

now this is where I have hit problems pretty much everything I’ve been looking for is really difficult to find it, or you need to modify something to fit. I had been toying with the ideal of selling it when I got the Hillman I’ve also wanted to get a mk2 Astra for long time so I’ve pretty much decided that I’m going to put it up for sale so if anybody is interested I would like 650 for it as that’s what it owes me so if anyone is interested send  me a message I can list every thing it needs. I don’t want to put it on eBay if no one wants It shall keep it.

I spotted an identical one in the wild on a B plate (you might need to squint a bit!) :

Mid 1980s Talbot Minx (Alpine)

bloody hell that’s a rare sight good spot I think the last time I looked theirs less that 12 alpine rapiers left with only 2 on the road. its a shame it doesn’t use more Peugeot parts its silly things like inner driveshaft boots usually the shaft is around 20mm but these are about 42mm I’m not sure why with only 90hp. the closest I could find was 35mm boots which might work.

So.... to be clear, the absolute last thing I need is any more two tone blue Talbot Alpine Rapiers...... but For arguments sake, say I had a friend who was feeling philanthropic  to the point of wanting to rehome any further orphaned Alpines..... what work does this particularly fine example need doing? (I’m asking for my friend obviously!!) 

On a side bar...... How many two tone talbot alpine rapiers is TOO many???

Good memory Dan!          I do indeed own a late model Rapier ( B plate) with similar issues.
 

I fitted a set of larger (15”) Alfa rims,  ( I considered the original 13” alloys a bit under- wheeled, these days).
 

Also replaced the starter motor ( twice, the smaller 1300 4 spd one doesn’t ‘ quite’ fit) , serviced the engine ( helicoiled a dodgy plug thread in situ -& got away with it!) and stripped the exterior door handles off.    
 

An absolutely splendid design- the pin rusts in its plastic housing,seizing the handle in the open position - curiously locking the car!
I had to lever, wrestle & strip all 4 doors down to get them off, and they’ve been sitting in diesel f r a few weeks.. Two currently shown signs of partial recovery......One on EBay £40. Fat chance....

Mirrors- I rebuilt the originals. 
 

I’m a bit “ meh” about it, frankly. It’s in reasonably nick ( prima facile- I haven’t dug hard)  But I can’t enthuse. Perhaps I will, eventually. 

Parts Aren’t  especially difficult. Speedy Spares near Brighton ( the boss is Sarah, really knowledgeable o things Talbot) or the usual sources
 

Hope it sells ok, don’t really want another.           Do I?

I actually liked your one, I didn’t think it’d be my sort of thing but I actually quite fancied it myself! Nowhere to put sod all mind and I think I need another old car like a hole in the head at the moment!

I remember following you when we picked yours up. Quite the sight!

I’ve heard of speedy spares I need to contact them about some parts for my 64 super minx I didn’t think they did anything for it as it  seemed on their site that they mostly did 60s and 70s stuff. I’ve had the same fun with the rear door hands on mine lucky mine freed off with a bit of wd40 and now seem to work ok. my mirrors were so smashed  their wasn’t really anything left of them I ended up fitting 309 mirrors which kind of fit. I’ve managed to source some parts for it I’ve got genuine outer cv boots, rear wheel cylinder’s and flexi hoses also track rods, I’ve also got spares carb on the way from Spain I order a few weeks ago as mine still has running issues. the main issue is bushes pretty much most of them are dry rotten they don’t haven any play in them that i can feel but I think they would fail an mot the worst bush being on drivers side front lower control arm which has been soaked in oil for years and has gone gooey, the book says you have to take the torsion bar out which looks really fun. and the other issue under the car is the drivers rear trailing arm has a very  small rust hole near the spring cup this is the one that really stumped me as your not supposed to weld tailing arms but i don’t know where you would find another one.  their a really quirky car especially when you throw in the random Peugeot bits.

It’s difficult to spend time/ money on it,  yet alluring like beaten dog . it’s a strange mix.  

Talbots do have  a habit of getting under your skin. It's a weird one indeed, maybe it's a combination of rarity with a sensational drive. That's why mine is currently having an engine rebuild
