nisfan
I'm nearing the final stage of getting the xud9te? engined 305 ready for an mot. While it's not an mot phail there's a lot of clag on start up and a slight misfire, after about 30 seconds or so it's gone and it runs fine. Was just looking for any ideas on what it could be? Glow plugs? Injectors?Ta
bramz7
So my ZX smoked like buggery on start up and it went when the glow plugs were changed. And it misfired.
artdjones
Also could be one or more injector nozzles leaking diesel into the cylinders overnight.Probably nothing to worry about if there isn't excessive smoke when the engine is warmed up. cpjitservices

jonathan_dyane
Might be worth checking the valve clearances if you can be arsed...
nisfan
I was going by FOADS many diesels which havent smoked at all, its supposed to be a low mileage engine.
derskine
Some prime clag.Mine doesn't smoke at all either. Did you not reckon the pump had been messed with?
dean36014
Also a slight airleak will cause a misfire and smoke on start on start up. Both my xud's do it, and both fast passed on emmisions mot time.
cpjitservices
Also could be one or more injector nozzles leaking diesel into the cylinders overnight.Probably nothing to worry about if there isn't excessive smoke when the engine is warmed up.This is what mine does, smokes like a chimney when I start it and idles lumpy for about a minute. I suspect as you say Diesel leak into Cylinders.
Lacquer Peel
Could be poor injector spray pattern too, indirect injector nozzles are fairly easy to set up and replace. I guess it hasn't had a good run in ages.

kee616
On xuds it common to replace the black hose from the top fuel filter to the fuel pump with a clear piece of hose, as said a air leak could cause this and you'd be able to see any air getting in Lacquer Peel
mat_the_cat
Which glow plug relay are you using? The XUD9TE needs the glow plugs kept on for 30 seconds or so after a cold start, otherwise it'll smoke like buggery...Check by keeping the glow plugs on with a jump lead for a bit after starting, see if it sorts it. Bobthebeard
One faulty glowplug? White ish smoke being un burnt diesel, hence the misfire?
nisfan
I'll replace the glow plugsonce it's moted, it starts fine when the starter decides to work!
mat_the_cat
Before you spend any money and time changing anything, check the glowplug relay! The donor vehicle would have had a timer relay which keeps the glowplugs on (even though the light itself goes out) after starting - unless coolant over a 60 degrees C or throttle is opened past a certain point. You will probably still have the switch on the fuel pump and the temperature sender for the glowplug relay on the thermostat housing. If you're still using the 305's glowplug relay (which goes off immediately after starting) then this could well explain the smoke, and it's free to check Rave
nisfan
Thanks for all the advice, the glow plug light goes out on the clocks but you have to wait a further 5 seconds before hearing the relay turn off, its more than likely still the 305 relay
