One taken from the family album of the town where I grew up and first worked at:

One of my Flickr contacts (who has a fantastic collection of old images) recently found an earlier view: https://flic.kr/p/2c6AUu3

In 1989 I moved to Ipswich:

Just the other day I stumbled across some great shots in this article: https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/past-pictures-of-ipswich-over-last-100-years-1-5918640

Including this one, taken very close by with my old house somewhere on the right:

I reckon that would be my old place with the fire hydrant sign on it:

What a fantastic early 70s period pic SpottedLaurel. I wonder where these kids are now.

Is that a Raleigh Chipper? ( not Chopper, smaller, and no gears)

Or maybe a Tomahawk? That's what I had, bought secondhand at the old Ranelagh Road Cycle Warehouse, which was just a few minutes from where this photo was taken (even though we didn't live in Ipswich at the time).

Another interesting nostalgia article in the local paper: https://www.eadt.co.uk/ea-life/nostalgia-gallery-of-crown-street-ipswich-1-5932499

Anything unusual here, or just typical grey porridge?

Early-mid '60s Mopar of some sort on the right?

I have an old ad scanned-in for the garage:

Interesting, even if it is mostly porridge.  I looked hard but could not see anything foreign.  The Ford Pilot (V8) on the left may have attracted an admiring glance from the people there, as would the pale Vauxhall driving towards the camera.  The Mayflower may have received glances and mixed comments.  I like the Minx parked with its back end roughly in line with the old Ford exiting (or looking for a space!), mainly because Dad had one in 1959ish when they were only about five years old.

Any idea what football ground that is?

Looks like Celtic versus Hearts and judging by the size of that stand, I presume Celtic Park.

That A30 in the foreground is an AS3 variant - from the first year of production.   All later cars had a revised fuel tank arrangement with a filler on the rear panel.    Not so unusual then but relatively uncommon nowadays....

  • 1 month later...

Queensway, Southampton, c.1962.   One of the two Mobil garages survives as a Texaco, the other is now a Halfords.   Most of the buildings on these two pictures are still structurally there (except the factory and steel stock-holders) but of course now surrounded by god-awful student accommodation, etc.

Revised dash too - the original had a round central speedo...some other bits and pieces changed too. Never seen one in the metal. The dash was David Baches first job - he was then at BMC

Can't remember the last time I had an attendant fill my car. Much more common in rural Spain though.

There's one in Dorset I know of, at least there was last autumn. Has the cable you drive over that operates a bell in the shed that the attendant sits in too.

Probably taken from (by) the Eastgate clock on the city walls, thought to be circa early 1960s. The view now won't be much different, except it's one way now heading away from the picture.

Circa 1940, the old market entrance (to left of town hall, where the cars are parked) has long since gone. Whichever planner/s had it removed and replaced by the bloody horrible thing there now deserve to have a fe sleepless nights.

Further to the left in this picture (not visible in it) was the first Halfords in town.
