NEW New new new New top gear ON HOLD, RIP?

I think Clarkson & co. from about 10 years ago will never be matched. The chemistry on screen was magic. The last few series they did together though, were tired and very much a case of flogging a dead horse.

The latest trio in my opinion, although better than the other recent presenters, are ok but aren't great. Better than watching Call the midwife though, so I still give it a look.

Look back at the early years of Clarkson,Hammond and May and I think the current trio are further forward as a group and are still finding their feet. Was worried last season as they seemed to be taking the banter with Chris Harris a bit too far, but have sorted that out now and all seems fair.

Flintoff is a cunt. I don't understand why he's presenting anything on television; he's not funny, entertaining or knowledgable. Same goes for McGuiness, although he does at least seem to be genuinely interested in cars.

The other one seems alright, but the first two make the program completely unwatchable, so I don't.

That vw ID-R was so fast! Only 12miles range though! ?

I saw it at goodwood last year. Very, very fast. However I don’t think its record stood on the hillclimb as it was only an unofficial Trip, not the Sunday timed run when it didn’t race.

Tonights episode was superb. A long segment dedicated to The legend  of Colin McRae. I loved everything about the bloke. He was the Gilles Villeneuve of rallying. Didn't know how to drive anything less than utterly flat out.

I shall actually watch it again soon, which is something I never thought I would say about Top gear produced in recent years.

That segment on Colin McRae was great. Harris pretty much perfect to play a part in that.

However, the rest of the show I thought was shit. I always FFWD through the star in the car, and I did the same after a couple of minutes of the emergency services section. Then it was finished.

Was that the series finale?

If so, my personal summary is that the studio sections are all too often toe-curlingly uncomfortable. And, if that BMW M8 review was anything to go by, Paddy is not a motoring journalist. I wasn’t in the slightest convinced about what he was saying.

Some good stuff generally over the series though.

Agree with this totally.

The McRae section was fantastic, but as a season finale, the rest of it was a pile of dung.

Genuinely felt like they'd blown the entire series budget on the trips earlier in the season and realised late in the day they were 1 episode short.

Paddy McGuinnes doing a test on the track looked more like a last minute thing done because Chris Harris was away doing something else and they needed a filler.

The Emergency services challenge looked more like they had whipround and got a few cars out the scrapyard. Everything else was just using what they had lying around, the celeb car, one of the old Lianas and whatever end of life vehicles the services brought along on the day ?

They'd have been better just extending the McRae film to include the years after winning the championship, moving to Ford then Citroen etc.

I don't think i'm too far off the mark either with the whole last minute, no money thing. I think the whole series planning probably got fucked by what happened the last episode when Harris and Flintoff went in to do that Baja 1000 even and retired at the end of stage 1. They basically threw a ton of cash at that and lost most of an episode by the failure, so obviously with PM not being there, got him to go and film the BMW track test at short notice for some filler and moved what was originally intended for this episode to fill that one instead.

Overall it was a good series though, but it did run out of steam. Think the 3 of them do work better on the trips, the studio element is still lacking. Don't think anyone would complain if they binned it almost entirely and just focused on doing a shorter series of 3-4 big trips (perhaps a couple spread over 2 episodes to give a 6 episode series).

I do struggle a little at times with Flintoff, think he tries way to hard to come across as a "lad". But when he's actually focusing on something like a motor sport event, he's far better.

That was mcguinness first piece of straight up solo motoring journalism. I imagine he was bolstered by the TG scriptwriters, and I noticed     he refered to Davos and knowingly looked at the camera “if I knew where it was” Made me wonder if that was a back room discussion with a scriptwriter that got chucked in by paddy to show he’s not Clarkson or may.

I enjoyed tonight's end of session episode as did the wife and my eight-year-old son. There aren't too many shows that can offer something to entertain most, but Top Gear is one. If I want to watch something that get the grey matter going I can nip over to BBC Four. TG is a decent bit a light entertainment. Top work gents.

I'm glad I didn't turn up to the filming. Never before have I seen such a collection of try hards in a small location since I last went down Broad Street on a Saturday night.

Good fun though. Surprised they let Chris Harris drive a Ferrari and allow him to be negative about it.

I was there at the filming of episodes 4 & 5. There were some proper knuckle-dragging knobs in the audience, including a Scene Yo! Lexus with a load of TOWIE wannabes smoking spliffs. There are some good things coming up.

Did one of them do Paddy's hair?

Because they have no choice to if Ferrari want to be on primetime British TV. Before Harris got on Top Gear, he was banned by Ferrari from reviewing their new cars after he wrote this article:

Thanks for digging that up. I’ve said it before, I think Harris is a top bloke.
He’s the type of guy who comes over to you at a car show and shows a real interest in your mk3 escort when your surrounded by a bunch of fancy £50k plus sports cars as he knows you have real passion about it.

I've never met/seen him around but I know he lives in Bristol.

One mate got chatting to him at some special event at the local Aston Martin dealer. He turned up to have a look around too and came over in his 205 Rallye. My mate chatted to him about Lotuses for a bit and apparently pretty cordial.

Another two colleagues had a good half hour chinwag in a pub in Clifton. Mostly about his racing career and his Le Mans experience. He was more than happy to talk about that and much preferred people trying to quizz him on his Top Gear work. Apparently he can't talk about that much for contractual reasons. He probably also liked the fact there was two car nuts who knew him for far more than that bloke off the telly. Anyway Chris was with his mates and they all had a good natter as if it was just random unknown people in the pub you were chatting too.

Apart from his 205 Rallye, he also bombs around in the city with his 2CV.

Those two colleagues also saw him further down in the line at a voting queue for Brexit. So he must live around the Clifton area.

But yeah from those three people, none had a bad word to say about him with their encounters.

I wonder if there will be any used car on a budget road trips this series? They usually kick off with something like that but if filming was slated anytime after March in the UK that clearly isn’t now a thing.
