The Moog Posted February 17, 2020 Author Share Posted February 17, 2020 Mini is a great shout. There is a guy who normally campaigns one and it is seriously quick round the course. It's the cheapest Motorsport day out - don't delay. Taxi would be shit as it is a) slow b ) very big. Ideally for autotesting you need a smoll light car with quick off the line acceleration. Someone was running a turbo car yesterday and he struggled as it kepts getting on and off boost meaning it was a challenge to drive. I was all set to road rally the mini, until my eldest came along but this seems perfect and a little less damaging on the car! Seems cheap too! I have entered the next Autotest on 13th August in Errol. It is on an airfield so should be a hoot! The Moog Posted April 7 Author Share Posted April 7 Last night was the navigation rally. What can I say but what a hoot. For anyone who hasn't tried it, I highly recommend it. The premise is simple - get from point A to point B within the speed limit. The hurdles are that you get penalised for being too early, penalised for being late and penalised for approaching the checkpoint from the wrong direction. Along the way there are signs with numbers or codes on them. Miss these and guess what - you are penalised. It's mostly B roads, in the dark and being Scotland it is flooded/rutted throughout. The other cars were pretty much rally prepped with massive front lights We took part in beginners category that got us a marked map If you go for Novice (next level up) these are the type of instructions you get These have to be deciphered and plotted on the move. Some of the rules It's incredibly difficult to convey the fun that is had. The first half took about 2 hours, in which time it is unrelenting. Navigator has by far the hardest job, being chucked about, trying to read a map, keep eyes open for signs and then watching the clock. We finished back at HQ around midnight to a feast of rolls and cakes. Managed to finish without breaking the Merc and still speaking! My major issue this morning is that I fancy doing more in future but don't think the turbo Mx5 will cut it. Might need to upgrade to more of a rally car. We always welcome people from other clubs or indeed anyone who wants to give it a go. Last autumn the club put on a training course for this, as a result we had 12 new people doing the Gropers Rally last weekend. We will probably put on another course this autumn if anyone in the area is interested in giving it a go. Post here or by PM if you want more info. dome Posted April 8 Share Posted April 8 I was aware of this rally but was on a night out on Saturday so couldn't attend. A friend of mine is an ex driver/navigator so we plan on taking part at some point this year. I used to do this in the late 90s and can agree how much of a buzz you get. Yes, the event is planned around an average speed of 30 mph but if you have 10 miles to do in 20 minutes that's all well and good. If you spend 15 minutes working out the clues then progress has to be made 👀 Weapons of choice back in the day were a MK2 Golf, my 205 1.9 GTi and my mates Puma. All absolutely perfect for the task of hustling down country lanes. I was a much better driver than navigator but I was a very average driver at best. The Kangoo would be perfect for this but I'd probably do the first event in the Focus with some driver aids to give myself a chance 👀🫣 The Moog 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
