Bertie the R75... Rovering onwards (towards the MOT)

So no residue/outline from where there could of previously been a badge?

I assume the badge is 'stuck on' rather than screwed on via the back of the badge and through the metal? I guess there would be a couple of small holes there if it was.

The badges are stuck on, but no, no residue or sign of it ever carrying a badge. I wonder if there was a delete option from new...

Had a waft up to Oxford in this today and it does drive really well. Clonk when steering let's it down - I've got it booked in for an MOT on Wednesday so we'll see what happens. Tbh I expect it to pass and the clonk to be top mounts.

The 2.0v6 really is a smooth engine and this one is beautifully quiet from cold - no rattly flaps here! It does seem a bit flat though. I'm not sure whether I'm just used to the remapped diesel or it needs VIS motors looking at.

My day off today so I've seen the car in daylight for the first time when it's not been raining! Standard giffer stuff applies, few marks here and there but no dents. Here we are this morning ready to go MOTwards!

MOT was achieved. Straight through with 2 advisories for light surface rust on 2 brake pipes - standard stuff - pleased with that! So I decided to treat it to a jetwash which would also give me the chance to check the seaworthiness of the boot - thankfully all remained dry.

Back on the drive, ready to go back into the garage for a while:

Bit of a fleet update!

I've managed to muck up and let my MOT expire on the diesel. I had the 27th April in my head - it was the 7th. I haven't got time to get it done until the coming Wednesday, so I've been barging around in the V6 for the last few days. I've done about 800 miles in it now and am starting to bond with it :D

After it passed its MOT the other month I decided it was due for an Oil and Filter as it had been done a year ago, however only 3000 miles ago. Done anyway for peace of mind. The autobox could do with a change too as it's a bit clunky when cold, but nice and smooth when it's warmed up - although interestingly seems to be getting a bit better with use. It'll get a change soon enough anyway.

The V6 felt really quite flat in comparison to my old 2.0v6 manual which I put down to the VIS motors needing attention, but after adjusting the throttle cable to take up the slack that created a deadzone at the top of the accelerator travel it feels much sprightlier!

Still a couple of little things that need sorting:

  • Clunky top mounts
  • Gearbox oil change
  • Front passenger door has a lazy door motor
  • Driver's side powerfold mirror needs a new worm bit
  • Driver's seat doesn't quite sit straight, has a tear in the leather at the side & the backrest doesn't adjust.

Have some photos:

And how about a Kv6 startup video?

Very nice car, its sounds nice, your 'To Do' list is a lot shorter than mine though.

When you say clunky top mounts are you sure its the top mounts?  Drop links often fail and cause a knocking from the front end, mine have started to slightly knock again over recent weeks.

Nah the droplinks are good on this one. My diesel likes to eat them though!

The only symptom I've got on this one is the 'click' when steering at low speeds - over rough surfaces it's actually really quiet which is nice :)

Update!

I’m 2000 miles in with this one now, and just got myself well invested by sorting a ton of niggles out.

SInce I’ve had it, it’s now had:

1. Oil / filter / coolant change

2. Full exhaust system including cat

3. New top mounts and bearings

4. New track rod ends

5. Full laser alignment

6. Autobox fluid change

It now drives better than any 75 I’ve previously owned as I have a habit of living with ‘niggles’. Now it just needs a new driver’s seat, and probably due for an aircon Regis’s (although it works alright).

The Rover has been in hiding since early November due to wintery conditions, and I'd like to keep this one forever.

Due to emergency & unforeseen Volvo shenanigans after a pothole incident I've had to wake the 75 early in order to get to work and all that bollocks. Is was sans battery as I used it in my old diesel one as the battery died a death when I was trying to sell the thing. Thankfully with a brand new battery the V6 fired up as if it was a warm start and immediately idled nicely, no smoke, no tappet noises... Perfect.

Got it out in the daylight and checked the tyres and fluids all of which were honkeydorey. that was the easy bit, but the rest of my day has been a bit like this:

  • Drop Volvo outside Kwikfit at 9pm last night (didn't have time this morning to drop the Volvo off then walk home and get the 75)
  • Drop keys for Volvo into Kwikfit on way to work
  • Receive call from Kwikfit at work to say it needed to rear springs, but they explained they couldn't do it until Friday
  • Called a Volvo / Saab specialist to enquire if they could do it - no problem drop it round ASAP
  • Left work at 2pm, drove straight to Kwikfit
  • Left 75 in Kwikfit carpark while I took the Volvo to the specialist 10 miles away
  • Wait 45 minutes for a taxi to turn up to take me back to Kwikfit
  • Receive call from Specialist while in taxi to say coil springs were fine, but its a split shock mount
  • Arrive back at Kwikfit, collect 75
  • Arrive home, drink coffee

They reckon they'll have it done by tomorrow evening, and for a very reasonable price, so so looks like I'll be going back there again. Nice people.

Do you know what though? I forgot just how bloody lovely the 75 is... It might be 18 years old and with 108000 miles on, but it is THE best driving car I've ever owned. It seriously drives like a new car - lovely.

Little update. MOT ran out middle of February and I had been a bit lax in getting it arranged. Took it to my friendly MOT place (no, not like that!) this morning and kept an eagle eye on the MOT website.

Oh well - not the end of the world! They're keeping the car and doing the work for me, as well as a service as its due. Pleased with no advisories though (considering it had advisories for brake pipes last year, which haven't been replaced!)

Fair enough! All being well i will be taking the 75 to exhibit again this year. Last year I said I wanted new bumpers (both have iffy repairs by the previous owner) done & the bodywork touched up by the BMC day this year - alas it's not happened. I do have the car back though, with a nice clean MOT sheet. I can honestly say I've never been happier with a car than i am with this one.

Bought unseen from 60 miles away, collected in the dark & rain, but it's the best 75 I've driven. Yeah I've had to do a bit of work to it, and under my tenure it's now had:

  • Full service 2017
  • Top Mounts
  • Drop Links
  • Laser Wheel Alignment
  • Full Exhaust (inc. cat)
  • Lower suspension arm / balljoint / bushes
  • Full service 2018

I now need to get the cambelts done (eek), and the gearbox is due a fluid change. But it drives SO SO well.

Had I mentioned that?

Not had this car out for a month or so, due to being busy with work. It’s going off to have its cambelts done on Wednesday so thought I should get it out of hiding to ensure all was well. Of course it was.

I found the rear interior courtesy lamp hanging down though, and looks like it had been glued up previously, so I’ve stolen the one with intact clips out of the diesel for now to keep the V6 complete and spiffing.

I need a few interior bits for the diesel at some point anyway.
