XJ6 4.0 Sovereign - any update since I sold it?

A strange day yesterday where both me and Mrs Cheeze both bought cars. She is getting a 65 plate Civic which she says she will keep for 10 years - hopefully.

I got a Jaguar XJ6 4.0 Sovereign for significantly less than the cost of her Civic. I'd been keeping an eye on it on Gumtree the last month and the price had been creeping down and I managed to get it a bit cheaper still. With a bit of googling it appears it went through the Morris Leslie classic auction in August. I paid a bit less than it went through there at.

Surprisingly Mrs Cheeze likes it and my Dad loves it. There is some rust on the roof and a giffer repair on one of the arches but it seems solid. Scabby bits here and there but nothing terminal. It has done 59,000 miles and only seems to have done a couple of thousand in the last few years.

It drives nicely but doesn't change up as soon as it should I feel. It isn't going into third until 30mph and fourth isn't until about 75mph. You can induce it to change up by booting it and backing off but thats not ideal. I need to check the fluid level. If it is still doing it after that I'll get a gearbox service done on it.

It is surprisingly small inside. I went to pick up my big mate last night in it and even with the passenger seat right back he was struggling. He managed once I had reclined it a bit.

Some pictures. The pictures flatter it.

Thanks for all of the nice comments. Like I say, it is a bit rougher in the flesh.

320touring, I've just had a quick nose at your Daimler, very nice. Now I want picnic tables! I was surprised that the gumtree advert for my car never appeared on here. It kept on creeping down in price.

It may sound obvious but are you sure it's not on sport mode? The speeds where it's changing gear sound an awful lot like my old X300 4.0 in sport mode. Or it could be stuck in sport mode (my 605 did that, and to my knowledge, two years later, it still is).

These seem to be coming the new XM on Autoshite - remember a couple of years back it seemed every bugger was buy an XM every week?

And Eddy, go for it. It's bollocks that these bankrupt you. They will if you're daft enough to throw good money after bad, but if you're realistic about what's worth doing and what isn't they're no worse than a Rover or some eclectic French thing. If you're in it for the long run, then maybe. But with the length of time many of us keep our cars for I can't see them being too bad.

Thanks for all of the nice comments. Didn't expect it to be so well liked. The photos are making it look better than it is. I took my mate who isn't into cars at all out in last night and even he was impressed.

I had a nose at the V5 earlier as I need to post it off. Previous owner had it from 2005. With a bit of googling I found he has a holiday cottage. I've cheekily emailed him through that for some history,

Might as well say it...ex John Prescott?

Took me longer than it should have done to realise that comment was about more than it just being a Jag...

Ps- like your driveway, is it oil resistant?

I can squeeze four cars on the drive. With my MX5 in the garage and leaving a space for Mrs Cheeze I still have two other spaces to be filled...  The drive is actually stained with Kurust! My MX5 was pishing oil from about four different places but I got it sorted.

Got one myself, they are such a wonderful way to travel, quite unlike anything else on the road. A beautiful car to look at and one that you will always remember owning. Love that colour too.

It is really nice to cruise about in. I always associate the colour with the XJR or even the sport but it works on this as well.

Lovely car and well bought. Pics of meekanicals please.

I'll need to get some. I found the wee toolkit under the bonnet yesterday. It has only been opened at the top to get a bulb out. When I opened the bonnet with the engine running last night I couldn't believe the heat from it. Temp gauge was just below the middle though.

It being stuck in sport mode has crossed my mind as well. The light for sport mode isn't on. Only comes on when I flick the switch. I haven't had a chance to check the gearbox level and fluid colour. There is a local gearbox specialist that was very reasonable years ago when my Golf needed selector cables. I'll go bend his ear.
