Is that a crank handle hole in the bumper? Still active at that age?

yes, not tried to start it on the crank handle but it is dead useful for setting static points and stuff like that.

Maybe I will try crank starting it when warm, what could possibly go wrong :D

Can you heat up the plastic coating on the wheel and melt the crack away?

No, sadly not, only way to properly fix it is to strip the rim back to it's bare frame and build a mold to re cast the rim.

cost = IRO £400 + Vat

https://www.famousfour.co.uk/new_parts/ff_part?part=19312

window rubbers come first. I did paint the tools though and they do look better :D

edited to add - found the company that does em, down to 325+vat 4 day turn around. tempted.... watch this space

Also engine now has one noisy tappet, investigation found not oil pressure related.

Just had a look at this on the Brightwells website. It looks so good, sure it will sell this time

I sure hope so, am worried that I am going to get bored with doing it!

in other news today...

I have funding for the door window rubbers :D

Fatha thestag confirmed that the tapping tappet is back on a cold start, not oil pressure related! on start up oil pressure is instant to 40psi, one of more tappets clatters like a good un for 2 seconds. not good enough! they are supposed to have an anti drain back feature, becoming clear that items fitted have failed in that dept. ffs.

Brake caliper replacement should be pretty straightforward. that doesn't worry me, I just hate doing things twice and those types of jobs seem to be stacking up on this project. I wanted it away to Brightwells next week but that is looking less likely!

Good news is that more work is appearing on the horizon,

Fatha thestag accidently snapped this up from a chap at the pub for a bargain price that we are both delighted with :) (i would have bought it but am borasic at the moment + Mrs thestag who just doesn't understand these things would cut me balls orf)

Last on road 2 years ago wcpgw,

Also via youtube videos I have been contacted by a chap who wants a spanish 2 door range rover converting to rhd + other odds and sods. spoken at length on the phone and plan to go see it next week.

Ohh love me a proper series Land rover :)

Top work on the range rover, its quite interesting how you go over the paint like that and how even the smallest imperfection gets corrected, if I ever want my Invacar looking a million pounds I know who to send it to :) (although good luck finding the correct colour paint for it  )

now to finish watching Part 26 (im about halfway through) :)

also found the Yaris window fix and Land rover hand brake fix quite interesting, I think my Invacar Model 70 has springs that go behind the the brake shoes in this case, like that as well which as you say makes them a massive PITA apparently, (I have not had to work on them yet, but as she pulls heavily to one side once the brakes are done doing fuck all. the brakes defo need attention)

Looks fucking lovely that. Steal of a price nowadays?

Being a project manager, could you not do a 6 month contract at lucrative rates to top the toy funds up?

Yay for door rubbers.

And accidental series purchases at the pub.

Read this in a pistonheads article and thought of your views on “pataina restorations”.

it’s noted by the guys how a change in buying demographic is influencing what they make. They talk of the older owners “happy to be under the bonnet when things go wrong” being replaced by a younger buyer raised on modern, reliable luxury, and expecting similar of their classic. “If it’s halfway as capable as their Range Rover or Bentley, they’re happy,” says Watts. The younger buyers want to drive their cars, hence the push to reversible enhancements

I'm glad this is heading to Brightwells.  Much more serious and respected than Silverstone and the Leominster location is the right demographic for this sort of car. I've only ever had good dealings with Brightwells in the past. There's always a danger a car will be 'tainted' if it doesn't sell at auction but, honestly, Silverstone is so far below the radar that most won't have noticed. Wishing you good luck and eager bidders, particularly because I'm really looking forward to seeing you crack on with the next one.

Landie is a pearler

I could go back and do a contract but that is now part of my old life, cannot stand all the bitching and moaning of a corporate job. Not sure I could stomach going back to it. I am adapting my business model and will survive :D

As an aside I have a short (and pretty bloody pointless) story about one of the cars in this upcoming auction...

20 odd years ago I was flush with cash and wanted to buy an Alfa Giulia Spider (Day of the Jackal shape).

I had looked at a couple which were a bit rusty when an middle aged guy in the Alfa club said 'come and look at mine'. So I arranged a day and drove 30 miles to see his car. I looked it all over and asked him how much he wanted..

'Oh no, its not for sale, my son will have it one day, I just thought you would like to see it'

Son has now put it in the auction.

yay another update etc.

Down in Devon so episode 27 on da toob will have to wait as no high speed internets

New front calipers had to go on due to seep from the n/s from caliper. ffs all have been rebuilt, two pistons out of 12 leak! I will find out why

20190820_112108.thumb.jpg.094b44e8cd47cd3be91543fe69bc385b.jpg

I had to remake the brake lines that go from caliper to flexi because new calipers are metric and old are imperial. I now have no idea why I would persevere with imperial fixings on OE calipers. not like even the most anal of concourse judges would ever know. just saying. learning etc

20190820_120340.thumb.jpg.f46ea1bfc654fb4a3220e08f1fe10e60.jpg

New door quarter light rubbers arrived.

frame is out of the door in 30 mins, dead easy. 1 hour later it is all back together.

passenger side done also

I then went on a marathon polish and wax session

seeing double, too much drink.. or not enough

long shake down drive finds the car in rude health but with a wheel vibration. oddly I found a small pile of wheel weighs on the floor.

in other news, the daily needs my attention. The drivers door top hinge has worn so bad that the top edge of the window frame clatters the b-post when I close the door. Been like it for over a year, time to do something about it

20190822_160903.thumb.jpg.96cc51378fb9d4ac11a8fa0c6bb23525.jpg

Door is easy to strip and remove, root cause was kind of opbvious

20190822_165359.thumb.jpg.57f6763e25ae19c59f83b6054129df78.jpg

Stripped all the bad areas back, top hinge is on right of the following photo. There is a fracture through skin and panel underneath

20190822_171825.thumb.jpg.978aeda2de88a5304dd1a3f85ea48241.jpg

skin came off with mr dremel and mr chisel. Obviously there is no paint between these two layers at all

20190822_172824.thumb.jpg.b82cb4233790bcd5e57f821d7506b7af.jpg

cut  1mm slot down the fracture on the inner layer and welded it back together,

20190822_174459.thumb.jpg.b87118e48b514141e26cb9934a952083.jpg

repeated on other side and flapped the fuck out of it.

20190822_175414.thumb.jpg.859f69be9cbd6fd6540610fb6ec639aa.jpg

made up a template for the outer skin, bit of paper helps here

20190822_180426.thumb.jpg.2422680d09c9254ac880e6d577d02d7f.jpg

welded in, piece of piss, not bothered about the section in the middle that the loom goes through. hence tags rather than seems. Being v careful of proximity to outer door skin

20190822_185626.thumb.jpg.2cdebb66cf2bb4dd0066238c9eb0a921.jpg

Then grinder packed up, £2.99 of brushes ordered but had to wait until next day to get another cheapo grinder to finish the job this weekend

20190823_114921.thumb.jpg.72b2561f39da63f9c092122016c77268.jpg

sealed, hinge in place and spacers added to allow for ker-lunk door closage

20190823_122901.thumb.jpg.53c11975dc29306365059e8494cb875b.jpg

when/if you ever do this make sure the mirror electrics are in place before you assemble the whole damned thing. else it needs to come apart again

20190823_135803.thumb.jpg.5725815e7c562ac4b54d53221cf98f58.jpg

next up, not many photos, lots of video

brake modulator thingy (RRC ABS master cylinder) has been dripping brake fluid past the pedal pushrod. not catastrophic, brakes still worked but carpet getting wet with brake fluid and etc.

20190823_155626.thumb.jpg.d74e486e0a2d71b8ea39396f512b310c.jpg

fitted unit I liberated from this over a decade ago. worked a treat and cost me 2 litres of dot4 brake fluid.

Great video thanks for uploading.  I love these Range Rovers,  always wanted one ideally an early 90's 3.9 Vogue SE with hard dash.  (much like yours)

I did once test drive one in 2006 for £1500, it was a 92' K reg IIRC, one of those 'I should have bought that' cars although the tailgate was rotten and wouldn't latch shut.

yes, auction was a brexit and government fuelled disaster.

Despite folk crawling all over the car - I was there, It bit to £23k. bidder refused to go higher. worth more in parts.

It is difficult not get get really down about this, I certainly took it better than I did after Silverstone when I was utterly devastated to be honest. My second auction, second failure. Am I jinxed?

Up until lot 91 pretty much everything below £10k was getting close to lower reserve, certainly would have breached it with buyers premium. Couple of odd ones a very nice 2 stroke saab bid over the upper, a hanging but complete SP250 went strong and a very straight T2 Bentley was strong despite having been painted by a drunk camel. Honestly you could see the orange peel from 6 feet away.

Discussion with similarly pissed off looking folk around the room sold the same story. uncertainty in the countries immediate future is making buyers nervous. anything that could be a daily driver seemed to sell reasonably well. anything a bit specialist or thirsty floundered

Three dealers I spoke to told me the car is worth top money all day long, just not yesterday! or until next year maybe?

I am not even being greedy with the price, when there are hanging projects selling for around £2k surely 1000 hour resto with 20K invested is worth more than £23k

Currently skint, looking to sell a project car, probably red shed to get a couple of bag in to live off. finish the 109 quickly and move it on and get on with customer work, I have a couple of big projects coming up.

I shall have a good old sweary rant on a drunken youtube video when I have calmed down

next year, June is 50 anniversary on Range Rover Launch. I might just hide this car away until then

Glad you've got some work coming in but cash flow can be a right arse.

I saw those RR projects go through. Noted one of them looked to have the driver's door hanging off yet yours is only worth 23k.... yeah right.

Don't suppose you know of any decent dealer types that could do a sale or return type thing? Got to be worth the right money when all this uncertainty has calmed down.
