richardthestag
Thanks Mr Tidybeard Much appreciated. and yet I will do a early late RRC light video and how to spot a ringa Today however much ballsache. Engine now balanced and running, however blowing oil on overrun - Valve stems and ticking like a bastard 2 or so hydraulic lifters are not working. Going to get a quality set of lifters and investigate oil stem seal which iirc this head cannot accommodate. so valve stems are too worn. gah I do have a fresh set of heads ready to drop on, just 1/2 days work to strip down the top end, replace gaskets and reassemble. Pics and diagnosis to follow this weekend. MoT has been pushed back to next week Carlosfandango
LightBulbFun
I look forward to the Early Late RRC video bollocks to the engine issues tho! put the 4 pot diesel in from the other RR in and hope no one notices? (whats the plan for that one btw? leave it with the diesel or put a V8 back in?) richardthestag

mat_the_cat
Great work going on here! And good info for anyone else working on Range Rovers or Rover V8s. How are you for carbs? richardthestag
Beautiful peoples Episode 17 is on yootoob, without realising it is the least sweary episode yet  now onto the next stage and some spoiler for episode 18 which is still being processed. Firstly engine oil burning issues were down to a blocked breather pipe on the RH head! such a silly problem with such a massive impact. Sleeping on it helped me find the problem next day with zero dismantlage and more importantly zero expense. Barely a week ago I was at home, blasting stuff clean, getting busy with the wire brush on the angle grinder. Here is why I do wear a carbon filter mask when doing this sort of shit Results were good, next up was satin black powder coat distracted briefly to help Mrs Thestag at a carboot sale - fucking hate them. BUT did bag this baby for 50p This is the pipe that caused me so much bother, looks fine here but when the air filter is installed it is kinked. Tailgates fitted beautifully. more issues were to follow here, because the tailgates are 2mm too close inside of bonnet was grit blasted back, epoxy primed paint on, not the greatest but for inside of the bonnet it is tidy enough finally got the 3/16 threaded rod so I could link up the carbs correctly. Did a massive choon up and got the carbs and engine running sweet. It was at around this point that I noticed the buring oil in the exhaust Irritated by that issue I moved onto other stuff, proving that the diff lock was working found an electric issue with the bulb circuit in the cars original switch. This was one I borrowed from one of the projects. electrics are good on this but the vacuum switch is fubar. made one good switch out of the two Nice 3d number plates arrived, super quick. Very pleased with these. Makes a massive change from the horrible trend of pressed aluminium plates on everything! Wired up the number plate lights, the caps are in queue for powder coating tomorrow I think this looks the bollocks, re powder coated bumpers are being picked up Tuesday, back end will be finished then Having fixed the oil burning issue drove up and down the field but could only get into 3rd gear even with low ratio selected. Might have been for a whizz around the block. Transmission is silky for an LT95 which is agricultural at best. Only issue really is that the tappets are tapping, maybe 2 hydraulic tappets have not settled. oil pressure is good. New quality set are on order but not due until Wednesday/thursday. Easy enough to fit but inlet manifold needs to come out again gah Back on track for MoT next Friday paulplom, 500tops, somewhatfoolish and 13 others

richardthestag
that ^^^ doesnt quite bring the story up to date so here is the spoiler fixed rear window clips, the clips that hold the sliders in place are unobtainium but did manage to sort it using my bench shear and some brake pad antisqueel shims MoT needs all doors, and tailgates to open and secure properly! top tailgate was cause of much swearing until I resorted to butchery of the utterly useless brand new seal top tailgate catch y-tho etc Cooling system now pressurises that I have replaced the expansion tank pipe that had worked loose. Glad I powdercoated it Powdercoated rimz and bumbers looking smart Pas belt arrived and the system was bled through, works and doesn't leak Blue bonnet refitted for trip down to garage first drive, one tappet still resolutely clattering away, alas check over found a dozen or so issues that would stand in way of Mr MoT. So I delayed it by a couple of days Rear seat was fitted to avoid an advisory (whatever they are called now) that no rear seat was fitted. This is the retrim done by Nationwide trim. i am not happy about the metal surround on the seat back, grit blasting it has exposed way more rust pits than I anticipated. Seat fabric is fooking beautiful though Had time to spare to trimmed up both doors which now "ker-lunk" closed Nervously waited and MoT was issued! Fuck yeah Interestingly I tried to take it off SORN just prior to MoT and computer said MOT was needed despite Historic status. This I think is because last MOT was 2010ish Trip up to get tracking sorted Then a slightly fraught trip home due to an intermittent ignition fault cutting power to the coil. No tools, no spares, no mobile signal. Managed to limp it to here, where phone signal exists'ed Called fatha thestag who came out with my 93 vogue in case of tow being needed. ran a spare 12v feed to the ballast resister straight from the battery and drove it back to centre of operations with no further drama. I know what the issue is, and how to fix it but ran out of time. Also the tapping tappet is driving me up the wall so have ordered a set of higher quality items for install this week adw1977, Springer, The Moog and 11 others
sutty2006
Where did you get those number plates from? I quite fancy a set for my 76 Manta. Great work on the resto, best thing to do with those V8s is throw the strombergs in the bin and fit SUs. With only one carb connected it is running weaker than it should so would be utterly gutless on the road. For balancing you want each carb to draw exactly the same amount of air, that is what that tool is doing for me. You need to juggle this activity with getting the mixture right on both carbs, I use a CO meter usually but lifting the damper and listening gets it close. Whatever I had it bang on I reckon because on a 25% hill in reverse gear and low range it crawled up backwards at idle. I will do a better video on chooning two stroms, people think it is a ballsache and end up lobbing fixed jet webbers on that are not jetted right and have all manner of PCV issues associated with them The Moog and LightBulbFun

LightBulbFun
very awesome stuff on the MOT pass  (interesting the DVLA page says October 1972, but the MOT page says 1st July 1971, wonder what thats about, although from all the invacar stuff I have done I know just how accurate* the DVLA can be!) its still so "weird" (but not in a bad way) to see Range Rovers on such early plates/suffixes (especially when I saw one on white on black plates) I always used to regard the RRC as a modern day car etc possibly I guess because they where sold for so long, and so where always relatively common, and the fact the styling does not look all curvy and old if you get me LOL so I didn't know until maybe a year ago or so just how far back they went  very interesting stuff on the carb front thanks for explaining it  so its effectively 2 carbs in parallel rather than 2 totally independent carbs? richardthestag
richardthestag
been a fun packed week with shitefest19 bang in the middle. For those with time and interests, episode19 is on youtube, alas it is out of sync with this thread. This episode runs up to MOT pass which you know already. Trying to catch up but takes an hour or so of valuable beer time to edit up a video. I am 2 episodes behind Episode 20 is ready to upload and 21 is in process. If you don't want spoiler for the next installments of youtube stop here!    still here? then let us begin first up, fix that irritating ignition issue, ended up pulling the whole engine loom apart and then found the fault within 0mm of the connector to the main loom! gah, still at least I was able to identify areas of the loom that really needed replacement. bored with wires and waiting for supplies from vehiclewiringproducts I diverted my attention to ticking tappets, in a nutshell, bit of a cockup in measuring hydraulic tappets. reduced size of shim by 15thou and everything is perfectly perfect. That green bonnet is next, teasingly rust free but struggling with an interesting paint issue test sanding found that the issue went down to the primer the paint was clogging the random orbital sander, so dusted off the top mm or so of paint with the prep wheel. The paint was blistering as I was doing this and I was very careful to avoid any heat in the panel nearly 5 hours later and some spent discs found a better back seat back than the one I have fitted. Had to weld up some self tapper holes for later carpet fit, flat it back and prime it, then flat it back, and fill it and prime it again. Not getting it perfect, it needs some patina but not so it looks orible. And yes that is a saw bench Painted I am very very happy with it. not bad for me, out of the gun new back wing was supplied with very nice etch primer. note not all black coverings are etch! some might as well be cheese. This stuff was good filler primer went on too phat which meant that I spent an hour flatting it back next day Having prepped and primed the rear bumper corners I marvelled at the complex details. Not one straight line on the whole thing! How the hell they pressed these things out of 3 chunks of 2mm steel I have no idea. Then today opened the drivers door and found that the seat belt had become trapped. fucking fuckedy fucksticks cunting bastard wankstain! then it rained... A lot managed to find time though to lay paint on the rear wing, which is 99% but has three fish eyes. Paintjob guru chap told me not to worry, he will sort it when he polishes and details the car end of this month Last thing I did today was sort the fuel leak to the near side carb. Much much more to come Oh and bobtail is next  danthecapriman, Banger Kenny, sutty2006 and 8 others

richardthestag
I know it is NOT autoshite and I will get back on form again soon by unbobtailing a 1971 bobtail! That might be triggers broom with original running gear and bulkhead but probably not a lot else. There is a S3 109 Landie that I have lined up next for a quicky* makeover. Don't let Mrs Thestag know. Work on Landies including a possible 1991 V8 SW (pretty much unique) and Stags is distracting me. I need money though, so no apology for going very un-autoshite. So where is the project? Well bustin my arse on it, needs to be at Silverstone 24 July, 18 days and counting. Everytime I fix something, 2 other faults are found. Loving 1970s British Leyland! Hang on maybe this is autoshite after all. Sorted out the poor quality seatback, with another I had as a spare, painted in 2k, happy enough with the finish out of the gun. There is a cover panel missing as it needed a bit of filler and prep Sorted the shite running, which turned out to be the nearside / lh / passenger side carb rod snagging. Ground out the end of the rod and reset the carbs. Now runs like a sewing machine Also prepped and fucked up the paint on the new drivers side rear wing, took a lot of flatting back and polishing but it is a lot closer than it was. here it is before I messed up the paint. Modesty prevents me from showing you what a bunged up air jet on a paint gun does. Now I check gun works properly with thinners and then with paint onto cardboard before going near a panel THEN a target date of 2 July was set, photographer from auction company needs to take piccies for website and catalogue. them interested can check here (there are spoilers in these pics  ) https://silverstoneauctions.com/events/2019-auctions/the-silverstone-classic-sale-2019/silverstone-classic-sale-saturday-27th-sunday-28th-july-2019/2pm-sunday-28th-july-2019-classic-cars-competition-cars/1972-range-rover-suffix-a Before that ^ could happen bonnet needed painting and interior installing. Hence me chasing my arse around Bonnet was stripped back - you know that already Is covered with dents, some from pressing, the only way to move forwards was to lob 1litre of 1k etch filler primer, flat it, fill it, guide coat it, flat it, fill it, flat it etc etc guide coat was rattle can satin black, cheap n cheerful, helped me ID all the dents, filled them Blocked them back on an evil humid arse of a morning, saturday 29 June 2 days to go! Horrible job but got it done, let the primer set over night and it pickled in a couple of places! FUCK! Flatted those areas back to steel Used a 2k acrylic filler primer to seal the 1k etch primer In between all this, interior is being installed Bumper corners were painted along with other bits, New gearbox cover was installed, from Nationwide trim, this is marvellous, fit like a glove Seats in, small issue with the runners being a lot sticky. working on that got a wee bit distracted when this beauty showed up outside..... stripped the spare wheel back for paint, me ears is still ringing started to sort through jack and tools Monday evening finished shovelling a 2k top coat onto the panel. big bastard flies landing on it and stuff! but fuckit ok for the photographer. still needs a world of work though Bonnet fitted on Tuesday morning d-day. slammed it shut and couldn't open it again! after fiddling with a spanner I managed to detach the plunger from the bonnet. Removed the grill and got around to adjusting everything. Photographer arrived and I was up to my neck in bonnets. delayed by 45 mins the chap had better humour than I did. Because of the bonnet shenanigans, I missed the chance to replace the shonky rear bumper and also install the sill covers. I am still annoyed about that but shit happens Made it though... and breathe 2.... 3..... 4...... location was up on Exmoor past Simonsbath. LightBulbFun
Bloody amazing stuff! that rush right at the end was nerve wrecking just reading it from the comfort* of my own bed! it might not be very autoshite in some places, but I found the restoration serise very interesting and very imformative, keep up the Awesome work and I look forward to whatever you work on next  (whats the Ford about? please tell me its one of yours?  ) timolloyd
richardthestag
since then has been an increasing flurry of activity, family drama and a wedding anniversary. love it Celebrated finish of the shoot and as we were passing the local seemed rude not to pop in Fix up the tools, which still need paint, or cleaning, or nothing and the cover which was a ballsache trying to work out how to install One issue that occured on the photoshoot was that the speedo started to click and read anything from 0-70mph constantly I had another speedo head which I swapped and it worked fine. However Mileage was different on the odometer. Oh Lord! what have I done? Worked though and speedo is now slightly over reading up to 60 mph spare wheel fitted up and uber rare boot floor trim installed. marvelled at the through the car look, before I noticed that the frigging o/s/f tyre was flat!!! arghhh Nipped off down to Exeter for a 36hour holiday break with Mrs thestag for our wedding anniversary Today I managed to invest nearly 4 hours of my time in getting the pin holes for the badge locations right.  I installed the wing/bonnet mirrors also, now the speedo drive has fucked itself again 190mile trip tomorrow in it.....  BlankFrank, LightBulbFun, Skizzer and 9 others
