I had a Mk2 1.8GLi on an 87D if I recall. D679 MRH

a ridiculous car for an 18 year old at the time when my mates had shitty Novas and fezzy pops.

Nice. Less impressive but when I was in lower 6th form a chap in upper 6th form had use of his dad's Cavalier Commander. Iirc he claimed to get 118 mph (???) from it.

I owned a b plate 1.6gl 4 door in a lighter blue than that, and my brother had a 1.8sri hatch in gold on an a plate. He crashed it and replaced it with a d plate 1.8gli hatch in the same colour as this one. To be honest I preferred my own one over his 2, as I prefer the 4 door, and mine was pre facelift, which I also prefer. Out of his two I preferred his sri, also because it was pre facelift. However this one is some restoration and going to be better than new.

Looking good this. Is it painted in Monaco blue?

It is! The original colour according to the chassis plate.   :)

Mate that's a fantastic bit of work 😎

Who did the spraying for you ? (if you don't mind me asking), as I'll be needing someone to spray something when I'm done, and not a million miles away from Cheshire. Do feel free to P.M me if need be.

Once again, sterling work

Many thanks! Paint bloke isn't interested in whole car paint jobs unless the rubbing is all done. If your preparation is decent, he might be prepared to get involved. :)

The underside tape pretty much came off in one piece, so a bit of wax application was due.

20210911_100951.thumb.jpg.2e223f27284a6567569bf68d3f399328.jpg

I did the front footwell/lower bulkhead parts first.

20210912_161000.thumb.jpg.fe2a919c55b0d1a624f87c14d4a1dadc.jpg

The rear inner arches were done next, preparing me for the misery of lying on my back getting showered in wax mist.

I called it a day before doing the underside proper - I'm planning on using some old throwaway clothes when the time comes as I'll be wearing a fair amount of the wax by the time it's all covered.  :(

Another one of those less than pleasant jobs done this afternoon - the underside is now sporting a decent layer of wax.

I masked up the lower bodywork first to avoid having to clean any overspray off it.

20210917_142624.thumb.jpg.ab6d301b79422dd19b5456fb51326bae.jpg

A couple of hours was then spent unloading the cans of Dynax UB onto to the entire underside.

I'll leave it to harden up a bit, then I can start putting the brake and fuel lines, tank  etc. back in.   :)

I spent too much time finding some new screws for the fuel pick up in the tank today. Eventually the screws and seals were found, and the pick up and gauge sender were fitted to the new tank.

The top half of the tank was then keyed up with some 180 grit sand paper to prepare it for a good coat of stone chip paint,

I'll do the bottom half tomorrow,  then once it's been coated with the underbody wax, it can be fitted.  :)

Got the day off today, so got on with this in between other jobs.  :)

The underside of the tank was stone chipped.

20210920_182221.thumb.jpg.0615eb5162eea497f8a99a13798513a3.jpg

Then the top side was waxed.

20210921_064014.thumb.jpg.88015cd8fcce3d3fd9ed2c95411b3a3c.jpg

It then went into position (easier said than done!) leaving the underside unwaxed so that I didnt leave hand prints in it and generally end up covered in it.

20210921_093747.thumb.jpg.083a37e8ab39dcd32f58d372b03f6b80.jpg

It was then propped in position so I could wax it before putting the straps back on.

More underside related goodness to come at the weekend.  :)

Brake lines went in this afternoon, I had to paint the front lines as the green coating had been damaged.

20210924_162613.thumb.jpg.be769bd137325dc07d9270054876e361.jpg

All clipped in on the bulkhead.

20210923_193411.thumb.jpg.7ddfc22cd9bd964395cfbc0a942c9031.jpg

The same out back.

20210924_163046.thumb.jpg.5322804bd40b00b4035dd96ec0f59e6a.jpg

Then given a good spaffing of wax to protect them.

20210924_163222.thumb.jpg.c879a24dd522cbe685f80997a45cadfb.jpg

Should hopefully be fuel lines next.

Fuel pipes not arrived yet, so cavity waxing today.

20210925_151458.thumb.jpg.6e69782f652aaf9a1c53c8dcfe61a402.jpg

Plenty of wax dripped out of the drain points! I'll check to make sure coverage is  good with my endoscope once all the excess has dropped out.

I dug out the new door aperture vents now that the waxing of the inner arches is done.

20210925_134204.thumb.jpg.40ae2a77d523958d35c8b2bc170cae8a.jpg

And chucked them on.

20210925_151310.thumb.jpg.974a5d320b5aaf65cb87f022abc16ba2.jpg

Before I finished the session, I put the rear bumper on for a look.

20210925_172140.thumb.jpg.2f2f120229dca7b09d02c3298f1f601a.jpg

It does let the side down a little as expected - I may try a textured paint to spruce them up a bit.   :)

Would the heatgun trick work on these bumpers?

They're not really faded, they're just sporting a few scuffs and nicks that will irritate me when the rest of the car looks half decent. I may have found a new pair - just need to scrape some pennies together!

This is fantastic and threads like this encourage the rest of us to get on with our simpler projects.

That new petrol tank.  Is it a GM one or a pattern one?  I had a pattern one for another car that rusted horredously without leaving my garage, perhaps due to modern petrol, or perhaps it was just uncoated.  I gave the replacement a coat in some expensive sealant and reckon it was worth doing to a new tank as the surface was very clean and would take the sealant well.  Just a thought.

Many thanks! It's from ATP in Germany - I've used replacement tanks from them before and not had a problem with them rusting inside. I've heard that some of the tank sealing products available can be dissolved by ethanol, I don't have any personal experience of this though. I don't intend to use E10 in any of my heaps until I have decent proof that the fuel safe additives like Startron etc. do actually prevent E10 from ruining older fuel systems.

Chassis legs and bulkhead structures cavity waxed today. I'm unable to grab images from my endoscope to post, so have a couple of pics of the side trims going back on instead. :)

I was worried that the clips wouldn't fit properly as there is a fair amount of paint on there, but they went on a treat.

Rubbing strips went back on with similar ease.

Hopefully fuel lines next. (again)

Still no fuel pipes, so got on with putting the rear running gear back in. The built up beam was slid under the car on a piece of carpet.

20210928_113821.thumb.jpg.de21e23694dbb165261e75cad85b80d0.jpg

The body of the car was at a height that allowed the mounting points to be shuffled into position without lifting the heavy assembly off the deck.

20210928_121721.thumb.jpg.49b660ec6efb0bd286eb99876d7303ea.jpg

A bit of jiggery pokery with a couple of trolley jacks saw the springs and shocks in position. I'll leave tightening the beam bolts until it's been sat on its wheels for a while.

20210928_134236.thumb.jpg.e418d4df961fdb01001fbb080924f11b.jpg

I'll fit the handbrake cables and adjust them up next, then I can button up the drums and get it sat on some wheels.   :)

A short session today, the hand brake cables were fitted and adjusted up. A pair of 6N Polo wheels were then fitted to enable the removal of the axle stands.

Once all the fuel lines are installed, and the rear suspension is waxed, the back end can be dropped onto the deck. The "front end" phase can then begin. :)

This has stalled a little at present, one of the fuel hoses is on back order (two weeks) and one of them is the wrong size.

20211003_172105.thumb.jpg.8a673c1414b6b33a85bb1843d096d7bb.jpg

All the fuel filler stuff has been cleaned up ready for when the necessary stuff arrives.

20211003_172050.thumb.jpg.873eee33cd77e7f3399b0951487b6f2e.jpg

I still need to stone chip and wax the inside of the front wings, so at least I've got something to be getting on with in the mean time.  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Been busy with other stuff for a while, but got a few bits done on this recently.

The wings got a good layer of stone chip, still waiting for more wax to arrive to finish them off though.

20211008_164523.thumb.jpg.904e05fac41e6de9046993786520594f.jpg

Got the metal fuel pipes mocked up, the one that runs down the offside rear chassis leg is also done. (All three are now painted too).

20211009_161601.thumb.jpg.bf79e62d491172d998163972fc72b024.jpg

The steel fuel pipes that enter the engine bay are in the process of being cleaned up prior to painting.

20211012_185238.thumb.jpg.d4f8b2f9ba3990a7f29e411eead3e2db.jpg

A couple of shiny bits arrived today too.

Hopefully more to come at the weekend.   :)

PS: When are you getting a Mk3 to complete the fleet? :)

No plans on getting a mk3 - even if I wanted one, theres no more room for anything else. I really need to jettison some of my crap, but can't bring myself to part with anything!

Good to see you back on here chief - hopefully when this turd is finished I can bring it over so you can check it out. :)

I've decided (after a couple of close calls) that the wings are less likely to get damaged if they're on the car. After fitting and gapping, the fasteners were hit with the underbody wax.

20211017_174315.thumb.jpg.de11b4d9518deb36d66d45c0a5b860aa.jpg

20211017_174259.thumb.jpg.77599e3f0740126e103c80be9c5057e1.jpg

I then fitted the little brace bars between the wings and valance.

20211017_174129.thumb.jpg.02332016e027d7078f69623c4b2973db.jpg

Before realising that the chin spoiler type thing needs to be in position before the brace bar goes in.

20211017_182151.thumb.jpg.1cc935b211f3a12c773ae4ff642d9793.jpg

All in position now.

I'd love to see it (and the Mk1) when finished, weather permitting could whang up on the Lambretta one day. Been trying to find the P.O of this Cavalier, but seem to have lost contact details for them, they'd love to see pictures when it's done.
