1993 Peugeot 205 STDT

Did a little work on this recently.

New brake pads have improved braking a bit but need to let them bed in. Finally got correct GTi ones sent.

Changed thermostat. Initially got sent the wrong one, took me a while to find the right one as nowhere seemed to list the correct one for an STDT. Ended up with a BX 1.7TD one which does the job. Heaters improved massively since, had to turn them down when they started getting too hot. Temp gauge sits at 3rd marker in now.

Next things are to change passengers wishbone, change timing belt and fit GTi springs + adjust torsion bars.

If this ever comes up for sale, please let me know.

Awesome car, good work.

Seems I have a leak from the pump which is probably causing the poor idle issues.

It seems to be from the back/bottom of the pump. The spindles are fine.

What's required, other than a Bosch pump itself to fit a Bosch setup? I believe I already have a Bosch screw on filter housing fitted. I'd like to tweak the fuelling a bit and think Bosch is a better starting point.

You can see the diesel on the block here:

The injectors and lines you have will work but the outlets are in a different order on the Bosch pump so you need to bend the lines a bit to suit.

You will need the Bosch pump along with the mounting bracket, injectors and fuel pipes.

I have these items and will post

With an exchange of PMs and readies they could be yours.....  :-D

It may not be the pump, it may be the leak off lines from the injectors, they go hard and brittle and crack easily.

Also, make sure you bench test the new injector pump before you fit it! (even if it is from a trusted Shiter!) Stick 2 long M10 bolts in the mounting points in the bottom of your Bosch pump, clamp them in the vice, take out the stop solenoid plunger, stick the inlet into a can of fuel and spin the pump hard with a socket and power drill on the drive pulley bolt. It will take a minute to prime but then should spit fuel out of the injector ports.

Pumps are reasonably difficult to set up, but there is plenty of information online. Dont worry too much about getting it set up perfectly, as long as it is timed up correctly it will run and you can go from there, adjusting idle/fuelling etc. Get it on the car before you start tweaking it up.

The central locking will be fitted on this model and the most likely problem with it will be the solenoid/motor in the drivers door lock, it has a switch in it for the rest of the system, and a 2 terminal connector. Easy to replace, PM me, I have one for postage and the price of a pint 😊

The suspension set up on this is the same as the 1.6 GTi (spring rates, torsion bars, shocks, track) so unless its knackered you aren't going to get any improvement with standard parts. If you decide to swap struts, I would strongly recommend standard springs, Bilstein B4s (£120/pair online) and if you are really hooning weld in some strut top strengthening plates (£20 online) this set-up was brilliant in my 205.

Oh, and avoid trees.

Cheers for all the info Will. I'll check the leak off lines and if they're okay likely get the lucas pump on offer from LP.

Also PM'd about that solenoid. Mrs_Derskine keeps forgetting to lock the passengers door.

Here's some better (still shite) pics for the 205 lickers amongst us. It blasted up to Aberdeen yesterday for our trip to the field of dreams with ease.

Shame about the bonnet. They tend to get a hard life these models, and show it.

Is the bumper damaged to the O/S of the number plate too?

Posted

Think bumper is okay. It's had a bump before, I think just the bonnet/headlamp were affected though.

Well... it's fucked.

Gave Mrs_Derskine a lift to work yesterday morning and it wouldn't idle at all. It would just cut out after a few seconds. Did manage to get it going eventually but it was a pain.

I've got a lucas pump from FOAD's scrap c15 van with a DW8 engine. Hopefully this should fit if I swap the stop solenoids?

I'm not in too much of a hurry to fix it though. I'm back to my trusty Volvo 360 and the heater is other worldly. The 205's is fucking shocking.

Sorry my Lucas pump isn't available yet, trying to source a pulley for the Bosch pump.

The C15's pump may get you going but it won't have a boost compensator.

Are you sure the pump is at fault?

Have you checked for air being pulled in with the fuel at all?

I have a Lucas TD pump from one of these if it's any gid. It hasn't been on a car for a good 8 years.

This. Check, check and check again for air ingress - just about every 205 XUD I know of has suffered from this to some degree, struggling to start and idle usually being the first symptoms. The fuel filter/primer, leak off pipes and fuel feed hose up from the bulkhead seem to be the prime candidates.

LP: I didn't consider there would be a difference between n/a and turbo so cheers, I'm not going to bother sticking FOAD's on and would still be appreciative of your one.

I'm not sure if the issue on Sunday morning was related to the cold start lever. The cable for it didn't seem hugely tight when I was starting it from cold last night. It started okay this morning.

The pump is definitely leaking diesel, it appears to be from underneath. I checked the leak off pipes, and they're fine, the fuel inlet pipe also seems good.

For some reason this 205 has a bosch filter head and spin on filter fitted, so I don't think it'll be suffering from the typical lucas filter housing issues.

I've not stuck a clear pipe on yet to see if theres any bubbles pre pump, but I'll give that a shot this weekend.

Unfortunately, the gear linkage support bar snapped on my Volvo so that's out of action. I'm using the 205 just now.

Perhaps I should explain the symptoms a bit better. I've not owned many diesels so haven't really encountered things like this before.
When starting the car, it will sometimes cut out immediately after starting. Once going, the idle hunts up and down from 500-1k revs or so until I start driving, at which point this seems to clear up.
When cold, the car idles at about 1.1k and when hot at 1k - I understand this is high for hot. When idling hot, the idle will "chirp" a little bit and hunt slightly between 950-1k, however, not when cold.

Not sure when fuel filter was last changed, but I will do this before doing anything else.

Here is the Lucas pump I have it is still connected to the engine mounting plate so timing should be correct. It is also bolted at tdc as I'm sure I removed it locked.

The cold start cable is also connected to the whole thermostat housing.
