sierraman
I need a new washer for my record No 3 vice. Where stocks shit like this?
Dead_E23
Must it be a proper OEM washer from the Record factory, or would any old repair washer of approximately the right size do? (If so, eBay!)
sierraman
It's a funny size, it has a large centre hole to it. I could fashion one but unsure it would be sufficiently strong.
Dead_E23
Googling 'record vice spares' turns up a few places that sell replacement jaws and so on, but they all seem damned expensive for what they are and I didn't see anyone selling the washers separately. I'd try enlarging the hole in a penny washer or something. The worst that can happen is that it'll get chewed up the first time you use the vice - and making holes bigger is much less of a fiddle than making them smaller! One problem though: how are you going to clamp the washer whilst you're working on it? Skizzer, mat_the_cat, Cavcraft and 3 others
Jifflemon
Funnily enough I'm in the same position of having to repair my record #3! Don't know if I need a spring. Washer or both!

sierraman
Might use the die grinder to enlarge a penny washer as you say.

sierraman
Purchased the washer and the relevant sized split pin. Including postage came to £2.49 on EBay. Anyway on with the stripdown... This is the Vice in question, a Record No3 made probably 5 miles away from where I live!
sierraman
Underneath there is a pin that stops the Vice from opening farther than it should... knock this out with a drift. You can spot it from underneath... Dead_E23 and brickwall
sierraman
As you withdraw the thread you can see the missing washer and the fucked split pin. Started degreasing with some 'Elbow Grease' - a surprisingly effective machine degreaser you can get in cheap shops. Whilst the Vice is apart I have some black enamel. Should I stick with the battered finish or give it a coat of paint??? brickwall

Jifflemon
Purchased the washer and the relevant sized split pin. Including postage came to £2.49 on EBay. Was this generic washer and split pin or proper spares?
sierraman
Generic imperial 5/8 washer sourced from EBay. Wouldn't have found it in a hardware shop. The Record 24 has quick release as well. EXTREMELY HEAVY!!!! tooSavvy and Jifflemon
