What's the requirements around DCPC and so on? Mine's expired, but my licence etc., is still valid. I enjoyed various forays into the rock'n'roll/festival circuit much more than general haulage, so it might be something I'd be interested in.

As far as I know there is no DCPC or anything else. Just a Class 1 preferably  but a class 2 is also good. A few rigids pulling trailers here. Mind you everything pulls something. There must be twenty vehicles here and I've only seen one without a hitch. Showmen don't have the restrictions that everyday truckers have. No tacho so no hours, speed etc. What the money is like for that I don't know.

3 and half only for me. Missed 7 and half ton by about 6 months. I've driven wagons on site for donkeys years including the odd artic but can't on the road for obvious reasons. It's always been a bit of an ambition to get my licenses but it's a huge financial commitment for something I'm never likely to do for a living.

My first time back at the Gaydon show on Sunday after 4 years away. Loads to see but in prime position was a favourite of this thread, the one and only Bob Carmichael's Volvo F88, not far off its 50th birthday and still in daily use. Photos don't do it justice and in the flesh you can see all the fluid stains and brush marks in the paint. What an epic machine and long may it continue!

And just along from that, the awesome sight and sound of Tony Knowles's gas turbine Leyland actually running and driving. The noise it makes is just extraordinary, a high-pitched whistle that sounds like a jet plane taking off. Imagine if it was a success and the country was full of these howling and whistling their way down the motorways.

I wonder if the trailer is of similar vintage - I've only ever seen that logging crane, and a twin axle double wheeled thing is pretty old school now.

According to the article Mr Longbridge posted, it is. Crane is powered by a donkey engine.

Yep, unit and trailer both from 1973. Bob has been driving it on timber haulage since 1982, first for a haulier then when they closed down he bought it and went self-employed. Surely there can't be anybody else who has driven the same rig for 40 years and I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of miles they've done together. Man and machine in perfect harmony for sure!

Just a couple of the various nice lorries at the Heaven Farm steam rally this afternoon.

There were lots more but I managed not to take any pictures. Obviously.

Top picture, to me sacrilege, it's got a BL front hub bearing cover, not an AEC one

Second picture, I've driven a Chinese 6 version (twin front steer but single rear wheels) of one of those (ex Shell tanker) that was a recovery vehicle. A proper fucking "Man's" truck, no power steering, heavy clutch and lots of gears that were there when you realised where they were hidden.

I may* have completely blocked Battersea Bridge during an attempt to restart a Neoplan double deck coach with it.

More from the YORK Trailers archives.

You're never going to see a trailer with this livery ever again, behind an F86 or not.

Leyland, or should that be AEC (as they built them and they had the TL12 engine (turbo version of their AV760)).

IMG_0296.thumb.JPG.8e197042f801a9060f836158b10bbf80.JPG

Think this is a Leyland Buffalo (as the Bison was the six wheeler), again a drawbar.

IMG_0299.thumb.JPG.7cc8cb18b09fb1f512958744f99dba86.JPG

More draw bar action, Ford D type this time.

I'm guessing your local HGV Test Centre would have a heart attack if you rocked up with this trailer without all the modern side guards. MAN tractor unit.

Lets finish with a trombone, hauled by an Atkinson with a GUY hauling the tanker.

I have been working in Baltimore the past couple of weeks. I did get to drive this beast of a cherry picker (admittedly only on the industrial estate). In contrast to the ones over here that are made from meccano and tin foil to keep under the 3.5t weight limit, this one had the lift made from 1/2" & 3/4"steel plates, was on a 4x4 chassis and had a V8 Cummins up front. Sounded awesome and was surprisingly sprightly for something that weighed in at 8.4t.

Oh and you could drive it on a normal car licence. :D:D

Currently in France, Ford tractor units everywhere. I haven't been able to spot where they are registered but I know they have been big in Turkey for some time where they originate, but didn't think they were really sold in other countries. Unless they are now?

They're widely available in Eastern Europe, I think (if a YT video I saw is anything to go by) through joint Ford/Iveco dealerships. Full circle maybe, but I could be wrong cos I can't see Iveco giving up ground in a strong market for them.

Initially the new Fords were meant to be available in Western Europe too, but I'm not sure that's happened.

Mick Moody will import you a new Ford if you want one, there was a geezer running one on international event/music work. Ideal as I think they are only built 4x2 and LHD. Ford themselves have at least one on the road, you see it with a race/exhibition trailer behind it. I'm not going to pretend i know the in and outs of the cut throat European heavies market but it looks a good contender to me, I would have one. They look well smart I reckon and the cabs look as nice inside as anything else these days. The Brit fella who had the Moody one raved about it in one of the mag's a few years back.

I've heard rumours Ford UK are contemplating official RHD imports. Currently they only seem to be available in one spec (LHD 4x2 with 500bhp) which limits their appeal here. They've started to take off in western Europe recently and a Dutch firm (Pieter Smit) have several, some of which are over here supporting Ed Sheeran's tour.

Very similar to this one in the Britaniacrest Recycling heritage fleet, although it was built by County. I assume this AWD is not the same one that took over Bedford?

That Volvo F88 possibly for sale soon:

That'll be a sad day. Would be good if he could carry on until next February so the Volvo hits its 50th birthday, then somebody needs to preserve it exactly as it is. DO NOT PAINT!
