One of the first 18 tonners I drove was an 03 plate example of these about 6 years ago now, I rather liked it and it had that unmistakable knock that Mercedes lorry engines seem to have. Good luck with the driving assessment Shep..

I love the sound of a M-B truck engine, especially at high revs in a low gear :)

I do like a nice DAF. I passed my test in a CF :)

Yep, they are a nice drive. The only lorries I’ve not enjoyed driving in my time doing this job have been Ivecos, from 7.5 tonners to 6x2 artic tractors, they are all complete shit and I’m amazed that Iveco are still in business...

Many drivers have told me that Iveco trucks are hapless devices. I've yet to drive one myself.

Best truck I've driven so far is a 1997 Volvo FL7 flatbed. An oldie, but a goodie ^^

What's classed as high mileage for a truck?

Over 1 million kms is classed as high, but age depending. We look after some 62/63 plate Actros mercs with upwards of 900k and some well into 1m kms and they’re still going, just about. After that milestone they become export territory.

Dunno how I’ve never seen this thread, considering I work on trucks for a living...

I got a few photos of interesting trucks last weekend at the Grampian Transport Museum for there military day. There was more but the weather changed by the minute.

And my favourite, which I also have a video for, is this. It’s the truck from the first photo but it’s towing a Centurion ARV! (Sadly can’t see much of the Centurion in the photo)

Well the Centurain ARV did a short stint on its own...then ran outta fuel....leading to a curious Sort of Tug to come the rescue with several Jerry can's, letting it  make it back 'home' (other end of the track, which being GTM is a very small track) before it made other track appearances ( second one was when being towed) . I think Supernaut got a few photos of it running on it own steam and also being towed.

Either way I was happy seeing the Centurian run, its the first time I'd seen an actual tank move (okay its not a full on MBT, but being an ARV it was originally a MBT) and every bit as amazing as i'd hoped! :D

You want to get yourself down to Tankfest at Bovington, great weekend watching tanks and ARVs hooning around.

Aye, I posted a heap of photos in my spotted thread, and the videos of it running.

I remember the info sheets stuck to the side of it said it did about 5-7 gallons per mile.

I was aiming to make it this year, as taking my dad down there for his 60th Birthday present.  Hopefully making it to Tiger Day if we can get holidays to align though!

How do they go on when they export them to Africa with the plethora of diagnostic equipment they’ll probably need? It’s not like repairing an old Foden with an Eaton splitter.

A lot of them get down graded to euro3. I didn’t know it was possible until a couple of months ago but you can program these mercs to a lower euro standard which eliminates the need for the nox sensors, regens, egr, adblue etc etc. All for the third world economy.

This old girl has recently been retired after being deemed uneconomical to put through its annual test, it was my regular steed about 4 years ago and we now have just  one other Foden left on the fleet, the removal of parts to keep others on the road has started....

What a pity! At least it will help keep the other on the road for a bit longer.

I have a real soft spot for Fodens, which initially stemmed from the young me finding the company's logo, the styling of the company's 1970s and 1980s models, and the way that the name Foden sounds when spoken to all be quite lovely.  FODEN. FODEN. FODEN. ?

I get a real thrill if I see one when I'm on the road, still doing what it does best. I'd love to have a drive in one, if only to say that I have :)

Went to Malvern Truckfest at the weekend. Obviously there were a load of new, shiny trucks but there were some gems too. As always, feel free to correct me when I've blatantly called something by the wrong name.

Couple of nice Renners. The only one of either that was there as far as I could see, doesn't seem long ago a truck festival had swathes of Magnums.

Likewise 142/143Ms.  This got so obvious, Mrs Pillock called me out on having a favourite truck. I've spared you some of the others. I do imagine a 450hp V8 beavertail goes well.

This looked absolutely smashing

This looked fucked. Part of the recovery demonstration I think although we went Sunday Afternoon when they weren't doing it.

IMG_20190630_131725.jpg

They also had a knackered bus to drag around, some trailers to demonstrate lifting, and I think they were bringing along the cars that the monster truck was squishing and then taking them away afterwards

A Dodge Commando in what might be described as in rather tidy condition.

48186108381_0282353a2a_o.jpg

By rather tidy we mean that virtually everything on the cab is brand new. The new cab came out of Renner's place at Dunstable complete with doors. Look! Seams where there are meant to be seams

48186170047_3062898b2d_o.jpg

48186108596_c83ebc14e3_o.jpg

And door bottoms where there are meant to be door bottoms.

48186108686_83f8c1d880_o.jpg

Virtually everything inside the cab is new. I think you will agree that it is looking quite tidy in there.

48186108471_825513c419_o.jpg

And by new I mean taken out of its genuine Renner trucks bag. Seats, dashboard, mats, headlining. seals, blanking plugs, the lot. A new instrument panel couldn't be found which spoils the effect a little.

48186170162_c81fee23ca_o.jpg

Perkins engine rebuilt at no trivial expense. Rebuilt means that everything was new barring the block and the crankshaft. Two speed Eaton axle fitted. New brakes all round, rebuilt power steering. You'll note that this one was taken before the body went back on it.

48186169947_8537e2b3e1_o.jpg

It's been up for sale for a while but no one wants to pay even semi-sensible money for it.

Wow, that must be the best Dodge Commado left! They were great workhorses back in the day as I recall from when I was working at a Leyland DAF dealer in the late 80s and early 90s when we looked after 4 of these for an animal feeds company that had quite a mixed fleet and the Dodge   Commandos were the most reliable on said fleet....

I do like an F-series. Fordy’s F12 (as pictured) is nigh-on perfect to me.

The Roadrunner was on display down at Stithians truck show a few years ago, glad to see it still out and about.

I’d like a truck to go with the bus, just the small matter of getting my HGV licence first. I was offered a Scammell Crusader for not a lot but had to turn it down.
