320touring
Whilst bimbling* about the Scottish countryside, the exhaust started rattling like fuck. Great. Got it up in the air, wheel off, and the issue was clear to see. Both of the front mounts for the backbox were cuntfuckulated. So much so, that the back box had been rattling off the damper. 320touring
With thanks to @outlaw118 for the title! In hindsight, I should have known to just head home as soon as I bit into the roll at 9:05am. A filled roll is a delight, the skwerr melting the butter on the bottom, as the brown sauce meanders down the sides of the black pudding. Truly the food of the Gods. But yet, something was wrong. The pungent aroma and gooey crunch.. the dawning realisation. Some cunt has put skwerr n onions on my roll. Nae black pudding to be seen. Fuck. At this point, I should have turned on my heel and went home to a cup of coffee and a day of pottering. I didn't. No, buoyed by optimism I pressed onwards. To the unit. Coffees made and approach decided. Toledo hoist aloft on the jack to cheers of joy at the working space underneath. (Another Stand was added after this picture!) Stands positioned, it was time to chase the first quarry. The rear brake lines were tired and in need of replacement. I mustered the pipe and union and set forth. Alas, the flexi lines conspired to thwart progress, lest they perish during disassembly. Another day, perhaps. Partial victory was achieved as two new rear lines were flared and bent to shape. Annotated, they sit expectant upon the roof of the Oxford. The next challenge was the subjugation of the surface rust in the rear part of the floorpan. Wire wheel and vactan the scouts for the cavalry of coating applied via air. Demounted from the stands, the Toledo rotates, ready for the review of forward lines. These are better, and not causing as much concern, but will be replaced in due course. Whilst in the engine bay, my eye is drawn to the timing belt, as it rests nonchalantly betwixt pulleys. I remark upon its slack nature to the assembled company, and determine to resolve it post haste. A short fabracobble later involving two torx bits and a long screwdriver and we have a rudimentary tensioner adjusting tool. Application is swift, and the correct deflection is restored to the belt. Reassembly prior to testing is smooth - plugs and airbox proving no challenge. Out the yard and left. Acceleration is reasonable when winding through the rev range, and I am feeling confident. An amateur mistake. Under load in 4th from low revs, it stumbles and hesitates. This is sub-optimal. More than sub-optimal - potentially catastrophic, for the Lady she needs the car on the morrow. At base we strip it down and re-time. Another test drive and no stutter to report. However the performance is abysmal. Third time lucky they say.. The cam and ignition pulley were perfect in their timing, but the crank was advanced. This effectively meant the ignition timing was retarded. All back together and the final test drive demonstrated an improvement in performance without the attendant stutter. A Decree rang out across the land: "Tis time to louse, and head for the fort. Muster the goods and load the wagons". The citadel achieved, there it sits That Spanish Bastard RoadworkUK, Coprolalia, outlaw118 and 6 others

320touring
After a short* period in primer, it was decided that some actual colour should be applied to the damaged flanks of the Toledo.. Today was the day. Initial prep was simple enough- mainly loads of sanding. I used a 2 step process Firstly, 240 grit on a power sander Then followed up by 400 grit wet and dry. Then deploy panel wipe - using an old t-shirt this gives you a reasonable key for the first coat of primer. a couple of places needed a very thin skin of filler to sort out some pitting once dried it was time for another pass with the sandpaper, panel wipe and primer after tacking up, it was time to shoot some colour. @GingerNuttz should look away now.. First pass wasn't the greatest - trying to get used to the can and the spray pattern It was decided that the second coat should basically they to paint the panels and blend it into the original paint. This approach worked much more effectively it still need clear coat, but it looks much better than it was previously... 320touring
After the debacle of me deciding to re-tension the timing belt, this has driven reasonably ok, if a little lacking in power. Until the NE meet yesterday.. It was happy on the motorway, but upon presentation to the Cunt o' a hill en route to @loserones it was seriously not good. Smelled properly hot, very little power. this was obviously optimal, what with @Tickman and I being about 160 miles from home.. at the time I decided to leave it well alone, as it would get us home. today I investigated: I pulled the plugs - interesting that they are much less sooty than previous.. I got the engine at TDC. crank/ignition pulley cam and flywheel marks all aligned fine. then it was time for the big boy pants - adjusting the distributor. All the information I read re the symptoms indicated the ignition was too retarded. Discussion with @blackboilersuit@Inspector Morose and @Jimbob McGregor Suggested ignition timing issues. I loosened the 13mm bolt to release the distributor and dialled in exactly* 6 degrees before TDC and buttoned it all back up. Runs much better, not hot on the big hills I can find. Feels more powerful, idle issue not there. Starts well when hot. Hopefully this is progress and should make getting to FOTU easier. As a reward, I stripped the passenger door, removed the green mirror and gave it some body coloured paint. Apologies for the pics, my camera ain't been the same since I welded it.. juular, RoadworkUK, Dyslexic Viking and 6 others
320touring
Sitrep: since Saturday 24th July, the Toledo has done 1000+ miles, transporting myself @jaypee and @Tickman to a couple of events. The last two tanks were 33 and 36mpg, and it is running pretty well after adding in the advance on the distributor. The 300+ miles home yesterday were comfortable, and it cruises happily at 70mph. all in all, it's acquitted itself extremely well recently, to my delight! I was asked on twitter (it seemed to find some fame there) if it was a CL - and it is. Basetastic but still named I hit up howmanyleft to see what the story was: looks like it's the only 1993 1.6 CL left in the UK with none on SORN.. Shit, that's a bit rare... beko1987, HMC, BL Bloke and 11 others
RoadworkUK
Well, there you go. CL is to Toledo as XN is to Peugeot 306. Stripped-out lightweight racing version. 320touring
Having returned from FOTU, the Toledo had 2 days well earned rest before being pressed into service going off on a short break.. Here it is with @jaypee's E30 outside wur abode. Cheers to @jaypee for the pictures! the water tower was pretty damn cool -spread over 5 storeys and with a verandah at the top floor affording tremendous views. Today was a short run down to Duns to see the Jim Clark Museum - a great wee place to visit, with a plethora of trophies and plenty information on the man himself. Top find was a SEAT trophy from 1965.. The trophy room was astounding - trophies from New Zealand etc, for a multitude of levels and classes. Not to mention the cars that were on display.
