Took this over to work on @captain_70s Dolly at @GingerNuttz today.

Great fun was had, much conviviality occurred, and a progress of sorts was made.

WHIT A LINEUP!

after dolotinkers, it was off to a mates to help bleed the brakes on his 2005 Ford Galaxy.

That all went swimmingly, and the pedal feel is much improved.

I drove for home, and about 5 miles away, I noted the brake warning light glowing - not fully lit. A gentle saunter home.

Handbrake off

IMG_20200719_185957.thumb.jpg.61177a3e459861295862a3a44ff4aa5c.jpg

The brakes feel fine. I have parked it outside the house on tarmac so I can see if there are any leaks.

Joys.

I have also compiled a list of the other work I want to do:

Currently:
Paint
Coolant refresh
Timing belt
Water pump belt
Alternator belt
Engine mount front
Fix temp gauge
Fix rev counter
New dash clock
New gear gaiter
New brake lines and flexis
Front shocks
Front arms
Rear shocks

Oh, and 4 new tyres.

Today was a positive day on the Toledo.

First up, the glowing brake light was resolved.IMG_20200724_134704.thumb.jpg.e5577d9942f80c3ead09f4be2f7dd858.jpg

To sort it, I pulled off the connector and cleaned both sides using a cotton bud. Reconnection and firing it up showed the light went out.

Result.

Next up was sorting the grumpy performance. Despite the new gasket on the inlet to injection unit, it still suffered from a delay and some rough running.

My suspicions were all located in this picture:

IMG_20200724_134706.thumb.jpg.15265487b449be648446d2af019420de.jpg

Firstly, I was sure the sparkplugs would be sooted up due to the rich running caused by the fuggernatit gasket.

IMG_20200724_134947.thumb.jpg.960b19b360a4e79a7ad0418b18d27a62.jpg

Suspicion confirmed.

All four were removed and cleaned.

Next up, the Dizzy cap and rotor arm

IMG_20200724_135816.thumb.jpg.cd4c780bd096810a99fe43d44845c517.jpgIMG_20200724_135810.thumb.jpg.778b16e7f1c2879c1d14d24b4aadca4b.jpg

Aye, that needed a wee skate with some Emery paper.

All back together and a test drive proved that improvement has been achieved!

Not much done on this today - it was the service wagon for taking me to tinker with the Oxford - update to follow.

One thing I did do was get the boot tidied - it's been a midden ever since I had to clear the ML boot into it.

This was part way through emptying it. The boot holds a lot of stuff, some would say too much.. my personal record with the original one I had as my first car was 1 tonne of bricks in the boot.

IMG-20200725-WA0006.thumb.jpeg.f67a263ba75f4312e007864a72e8858d.jpeg

IMG-20200725-WA0012.thumb.jpeg.9122d89390ce535c4fe4f52cc621b003.jpeg

Here we see @captain_70s mid shuftery bopping as we sorted out the myriad bags and boxes that littered the boot.

I then took the opporchancity to deploy the hoover - leading to a clean boot space.

IMG-20200725-WA0010.thumb.jpeg.5522aafc8d2487dc43da6e69360675e8.jpeg

This was promptly polluted with shite that needed taking on a tip run.

When we got back and had finished our repast, the boot toolery was rationalised and loaded.

IMG-20200725-WA0014.thumb.jpeg.5b5dd5854fa8f43abc3ae4c3d7989eb7.jpeg

After this shot, the shiny new jack was loaded in too. The boot on this is tremendous:)

Slowly getting there!

Some Action shots..

Up in Stirling to meet some friends

IMG_20200729_182149.thumb.jpg.b2c55580fa4d15a13f239bbfbc3caa89.jpg

As a service barge for other car tinkering..

IMG_20200730_182518.thumb.jpg.06a9fa1eab38b16f5c1dfc07cfee9b11.jpg

This is due to be the conveyance for a trip away at the weekend..

So far

The exhaust rattles (but thankfully doesn't blow)

The interior trim rattles

The new clutch cable isn't self adjusting properly

Got at least one wheelbearing making itself known.

Happy days! Will try to resolve some of the issues before we head..

When the Clutch was first done, the clutch pedal was lovely and crisp.

This then slowly degraded into a floppy pedal with no feel. However the clutch still worked well, and the gearchange was good.

It seemed that the "Self-adjusting" clutch cable just wasn't. @Mk2 Craig wasn't pleased with that. To his considerable credit, he decided that it would be best to switch to a manually adjustable cable.

This was collected on Wednesday, and he came over to fit it.

First up, the "self-adjuster" was removed from the gearbox end. The cable is only held in place by a clip that slides into the end of the cable

IMG_20200805_123618.thumb.jpg.c4fbbb8964456250efd1e940f1018989.jpg

You can see the release arm has dropped and the end of the cable is the silver bit just above the release arm

IMG_20200805_124020.thumb.jpg.02d37bc690cb888365dd620bd823fa9d.jpg

The other end of the cable was removed from the hook at the top of the pedal, and then it was pulled through the bulkhead.

IMG_20200805_124736.thumb.jpg.c76387428251644f11abff9e506d3b7d.jpg

The clutch cable is the top cable with the shiny metal on it. It passes through the bulkhead above the pedal, and then through a grommet and hole in the scuttle panel

IMG_20200805_124724.thumb.jpg.2def94578e028f09ed5cfcfc39d629f1.jpg

Whilst doing this, we discovered that the ECU was loose, so it was reseated

IMG_20200805_124803.thumb.jpg.d333054acf959f6c363cd8c2b8b2219b.jpg

The new cable was made ready

IMG_20200805_123710.thumb.jpg.3aef076f2bae22a1fc02b662e75a176b.jpg

Thankfully it slipped in easily (ooh err) and was clipped onto the pedal.

Lastly, it was fitted to the gearbox end, adjusted and locked off.

IMG_20200805_125902.thumb.jpg.469bd2b62b98e066ee1da4ebbc4c8e04.jpg

Biting point is where it should be, and the pedal feels lovely!

Thanks again to @Mk2 Craig for his professional approach and for sorting it.

Resurrected this today. Been sitting under a tree since early August. Battery has been connected all the time.

Straight to running first turn of the key😀

Luckily it was waxed before being parked up..

why was it resurrected, I hear you cry?

We are getting new suites this week, so the old stuff had to get to Fuck.

It's 30+ years old and humped, no fire safety labelling so can't even give it away

thats two complete wingback chairs in there - only slight* hammering needed.

The boot even shuts!

  • 320touring changed the title to 320Touring's 1993 SEAT Toledo- I'm Lazarus, NO, I'm Lazarus! 17/1/2021

This has been sitting a while, but what with the dismal Saab MOT failure, and an alarming lack of available alternative conveyances, it was time for it to step  once more unto the breach!

Time sitting had not been kind to it, as you can see here:

She was damp as a damp thing, and the paint was honking...

I'd dried it out after the first video, so it wasn't quite as foul, and cleaned the steering wheel.

Before starting her up, it was time to treat it to a new battery.

Out with the old 075..

IMG_20210117_133153156.thumb.jpg.d1da329743ace55eeb95bb822fd36d62.jpg

And in with the "whitever the fuck" from the Saab. It's a big bastards, and is hard up against the power steering reservoir.

IMG_20210117_133452135.thumb.jpg.45a34c03825946d76ae3c54bc3d441e4.jpg

Luckily, it's the right depth so fits in the appropriate clamp locations, and the terminals line up.

Then it was off to the local Asda for a fettle. All tyres were set (luckily the steel wheels mean they don't lose pressure - they were all still above 30psi).

I gave the vacuum a workout clearing the remaining water out. Then drove to Lidl to buy a wetvac 😂

It was treated to a wash and some petrol - I decided to be positive and fill the tank - in the hope it behaves..

Next outing is early tomorrow as I have an appointment to attend.

Going to try and source a new sunroof seal, and get some wardrobe dehumidifiers. The car hasn't been this damp before, and I noticed the sunroof seal was buggered.

Choon in soon for the next exiting* episode of this handsome Spanish basturt!

Good to see it up and at it.

Swing by from your appointment if you want some de-hum tubs, I have 2 spare. Thought I'd need them for the Audi but it's stayed dry so I don't need them.

Cheers dude, may grab them at some point. Am off in the opposite direction tomorrow.

This has its first real use today.

As expected it fired right up no bother, and happily was not too moist inside. I'm currently trying to find a sunroof seal ( same as a mk2 golf, by the looks of it) without spending £100...

Anyway, back to the driving.

Now, this is no ball of fire. 1.6 litres, 8valves and 75hp from the factory. However, the engine is absolutely brilliant. These 8v lumps are really well set up, with big slugs of torque low down - properly lazy to drive. Having had the 1.8 version in my first Toledo, they kind of set my "default driving style".

With the work that @Mk2 Craigdid on the clutch and gearshift, it's a satisfying shift.

Despite a fully loaded boot (tools) and a full tank of fuel, it'll happily pull 4th from idle at 22mph or so. Just roll into the throttle and away it goes.

The Saab on the other hand, was a revvy needing turd. 4th couldn't be used til nearly 40, and it didn't like anything below about 2krpm.

So far so good. There are some downsides though: in the braking department, it feels much closer to the Oxford than the GSA in stopping power and braking confidence.  This seems to be a MK2 golf platform TADTS, but I think I'll do a fluid change and bleed soon. I think I even have new front calipers somewhere.

It also doesn't have the expected options that it should have (being a MODRIN in my head, despite being 28 years old).

Traction control is useful for escaping my street in the rain - it's a steeply ramped exit onto a main road, so avoiding wheelspin is key.

I also liked the handiness of cruise for longer trips, or rolling past camera vans on the correct limit.

These are simple enough to live without, but add to the 'oldskool' feel. Much like the E30/GSA/OXFORD and MK1 golf cab. I like it!

It reminded me today that it sounds like it has a rear bearing on the way out. I have one in stock, so will try to do that soon - they're simple enough on these cars.

In the interim, a technical fix was attempted.

Firstly, assemble the parts:

IMG-20210118-WA0022.thumb.jpeg.2a62ea9df0588640ee60dfddf26be83c.jpeg

Identify where the solution is to be deployed

Extract appropriate attachments

Test fit to the solution

IMG_20210118_142011812.thumb.jpg.8c691ffd23b5b01c1e69baadd9caaf9a.jpg

Deploy to live

IMG_20210118_143742327.thumb.jpg.0edb46b46176785c9bdae886f37b9bc4.jpg

Obviously, it doesn't work. For the moment.

However it looks ace! I bought it off a shiter (think it was @ProgRocker ?)- thanks to them!

It's just occurred to me that the dash on these reminds me of a Corrado, that's why it appealed so much.

Interesting - it seems to be a mismatch of golf and Passat bits - hadn't ever considered the corrado. I can see what you mean!

I've just put a set on my 205 and they're good.  Of course they won't be as good as Michelins though!
