*Good Sir, what appears to be out of sorts with your motor-conveyance?

At first glance

Broken front spring, clutch less functional than Boris Johnston.

And much much cleanery.

  • 2 weeks later...

This has been resting in my new lock up for the last couple of weeks.

Today saw much cleaning taking place as she'd been parked up manky ( having lived under trees for a few months at the house.

Young Mr IainL came over to help, as did brutha_touring.

To say it was manky would be an understatement.

  • 1 month later...

Had a spare hour available today - so got this prepped for some work.

Firstly, I had to shuffle it to the other side of the garage - being in a semi circle, the rear of the garages are wider than the front.

This means you can get ample room to work at one corner of the car with some shuftying.

This involved me squeezing my fat carcass out the passenger side.

Then it was out with the hardly ever used toolkit and Jack.

Then it was up in the air and on an axle stand for some perusal.

It's pretty obvious where the fault lay..

So I soaked everything in Remonstrating Fluid, and will get a spring ordered up.

Finding a clutch cable is proving somewhat more difficult.

It has a self adjusting one fitted, but I need to see whether I can find a part number to check against those available.

The clutch is poor on the car, and I don't know how much is down to terrible Giffer owners prior to me, and how much is the fact that the self adjusting clutch cable doesn't..

We'll see!

Confusion reigns supreme re getting a clutch for this car..

I asked an eBay seller re a kit that was available and got this back:

"Hello,

unfortunately the data return on the vehicle Reg look up is incomplete and also we believe some incorrect information also exists in the data for your vehicle.

The system is not giving us your Chassis number, which we need to confirm fitment or not and although it gives us an engine output figure, we believe it's incorrect.

The system also shows your car as power output 40.3kw (54hp) which as far as we are aware does not apply to any 1.6 litre, it's far too low and should be from 71hp to 100 hp depending on engine. Our guess is that you have the 54kw / 73hp engine which is fulfills the engine cirteria fitment for this clutch ......but.....

Your vehicle is shown to be registered 23rd March 1993, so falls into the month / year period where the chassis number is required as there is more than option clutch around this period.

You need to check you chassis number against the information we have provided in the listing.

Sorry we can't give you a definate yes or no. (without the chassis number and true engine output we would have to say no)"

Fair play to them for being honest - guess I'll be doing some chassis number checking when I get in:)
