Dacia Denem hunt

Depends on your perspective.

Helpful in that you now know the answer. Unhelpful when you're trying to buy one.

HML is not famously accurate, but in this case I'd say that's Bob on. If there's one hiding somewhere then it's not been near a road or SORN for about 15 years.

Yeah, the owner has brought it over with him and had it re-registered in the UK - the "N" at the end indicates it is a 1973/74 car.

My dad had a 1974 Renault 12 so have a lot of affection for them. Very very rare indeed over here nowadays. I dont suppose Dacia sold the Denem in other right hand drive markets like South Africa, Australia or New Zealand?

How many were sold in the UK?

I was in the retail motor trade 1985-1996 working for Volvo, Citroen and Vauxhall dealers and was never offered one in PX.

Prior to 1985 I managed a motor parts shop and don't remember being asked to supply spares for one.

I have driven a Renault 12 TS and it was very nice.

ISTR there was an article in PC a few years ago about Mr Glover's epic trip to/from Romania to pick up an ultra-rare 2-door coupe version of the Denem. Didn't hear what happened to the car after that.

For the record...Dacia were not sold in NZ, but Polonez was, they sold 8 before giving up. Lada were sold in relatively large numbers as during the bad days at the end of communism they were swapped for dairy products, or how many pounds of butter is a Lada worth.

Reminds me of this, from 1978 ...

STUNO is in NZ, there are a couple of others but he's the only one whose username I can remember, might be worth a PM.

Watch out for import taxes. I nearly got MIL over there to buy me a Renault 5 - identical to my first car but minus the rust.

By the time shipping and taxes were roughly worked out, my $500 folly was shaping up at around £2000 sterling - just thought it's worth mentioning so you were aware early doors

And the exchange rate which was £1:$2.40 around 9 months ago is now £1:$1.90.

Don't get me fucking started on the brilliant idea that triggered that fall....

I can't put a proper link as I'm on my phone, but this Shifter was for sale last year on Retro rides, it's a 4wd version with a knackered gearbox. Chrisdcapri was selling it. It might still be around?attachicon.gifP1010138_zpsa683e36d.jpg

I've seen a video of it made by the new owner.Just search on YouTube Dacia Shifter. It is made by someone named Nigel Moore.

The cars for beef / butter story reminds me of a wind up my dad's mates had with a Moskvitch owning colleague.

They put about a story about East Germany exchanging Moskvitches for West German porn.

The punch line......

It was a tit for tat arangement. ☺

I don't know what happened to Sam's Dacia 1410 Sport, but he asked me if I know someone that owns one of those.I know someone that lives on my street that has one of those that has been sitting in his garage for many years,it still has old license plates from the communism!I was thinking about buying it,but his son-in-law(it think)doesn't want to sell the car.The car nearly looks like brand new! With original paint!
