Domes shonky autos-Starlet Express* Rejuvenation ongoing

Recommended Posts

It all started with a message from a mate last week. Want a free car? A friend of his was needing rid.

You can guess what my answer was.

I was sent this photo and told it had early stages of head gasket failure.

At least I new this one was broken. Whether or not it would make it home or not was a different matter...

Fast forward to tonight. Supplies collected and off we went.

Transport of choice. My mate is a shiter, he just doesn't know it yet...

On to the beast in question.

A 1.8 (it would be wouldn't it?) Freelander Serengeti. Phwoooar.

Initial thoughts under the bonnet-no obvious signs of being fucked about with, however no coolant in the expansion bottle and the dipstick was dry. No signs of Mayo anywhere.

Topped up fluids and fired it up. It was a bit tappy which is to be expected with no oil but quietened down. Let it warm up, bled it a bit and added some K Seal. I had a 25 mile drive home so better safe than sorry. I also left the expansion cap off and set the heater to max and off we set. Brakes were stuck on but soon freed off.

It only bloody made it! I babied it, not taking it above 3000rpm but when I got home it hadn't used any coolant. Gauge stayed bang in the middle and the heater was blowing red hot all the way.

I put the expansion cap on and let it run for a bit and it behaved itself.

Back home. Apologies for the pics, it was getting dark. Probably for the best.

It's a bit rough, stinks of fags and only one electric window works. It's had the prop disconnected so is 2wd. It drives OK, think there may be an engine mount gone and there something knocking front end wise. But it was free...

Plans? Clean it and work out what's wrong with the engine. The boy I got it from reckoned it had had the modified head gasket done before he got it, there are no receipts though...

Then smoke about for a bit and flog it. Probably to buy something equally broken. I don't get out much.

Well, so confident* was I in my new steed that I decided to brave the commute in it today-also becauee it's only insured til tonight and it gives me a chance to put some more miles on it and hoover it/check tyre pressures etc. I gave it a quick wash and it came up not too bad. I even refitted the expansion cap after checking the coolant-no loss in the 25 miles last night. Quick wash this morning as it was manky and here's the passenger side for the doubters ;)

Guest Hooli

When you say the modified head gasket has been fitted, which one? there were a lot of revisions. I think the final one included a new stiffer ladder which fits in the sump for the head bolts to lock into.

I have no idea and no bills or history for the car so your guess is as good as mine...

Started trying to get the stink of fags out of this thing. Knackered drivers side regulator and a chain smoker=filth.

It'll need done again. And again. Still stinks inside. Any tips for getting rid of the smell of fags?

Will try and get the inlet manifold gasket changed this weekend and give it a coolant flush and proper bleed if I get the chance, the Locost is the priority though if I get the head back for it...

Get the front seats out and have a good hoover underneath. Headlining takes a lot of stink too.

I've found steam cleaners to be pretty effective. Just watch out / becareful on stuff like headliners.

Thought I should probably start a thread, given that a few people have suggested it. For my sins, my first car was a 1985 Hyundai Stellar. Bought back in 1997, when the sun still shone, I had more hair, and the world was generally a better place.

This may be the earliest photo I have, I think from 1998:

Anyway, I drove everywhere in it, and clocked up over 100k miles before I was given an Alfa Romeo 75. So I took the Stellar off the road for some much needed TLC. Made some progress on it - Rebuilt all the suspension, fitted a rebuilt Cortina* rear axle, Princess 4 pot front calipers and Capri vented discs etc - before a couple of house moves and renovations put it on the back burner.

      * before anyone says they are identical underneath, there are some differences. I fitted a replacement axle fairly early on in my ownership, only to fit that not only was the propshaft flange the wrong size, the UJ was totally different so I couldn't even fit a new yoke. Finding a company on the day before New Year's Eve who could cut off the end, weld a new UJ on and balance it wasn't too easy, especially one that was accessible by push bike!

Anyway, late last year I found some renewed motivation, and have been working on it when time and money permit. Here is what it looked like in October:

      OMG barn find?

Front suspension OK at first glance...

...but it has turned out the calipers had seized (so are away being rebuilt) and all the (brand new) ball joint boots had perished:

Quite a bit of welding is needed too, but I had a setback just before Christmas when we were burgled and my welder stolen

      Crusty roof rail

I've cleared some of the crap away from it now (it's not stored at mine - I'd love to own somewhere that big!) so might be able to get more photos. Currently working on the rear brakes, and disappointed to find that the shotblasted rear axle is now starting to rust after two coats of POR15 and 7 years storage under cover...

      Greetings all.

After lurking here for a short while, frankly liking what I see and enjoying the various shite, the site has well and truly struck a chord with me. I'm a serial buyer of ropey sub £1k vehicles, don't have to but genuinely enjoy it.

I feel like I might (Just might) have found my 'spiritual' home here

I've been posting across the web on owner specific forums (Usually using either my JoeyEunos or RandomPrecion handles) for a while now, but from here-on-in I will pull my threads together and merge them here into one ghastly topic.

Usually my comute to work is boring and miserable, especially in winter. All of 4 miles doesnt even get the old girl warm. But yesterdays antics saw an audi Q7 side swipe me when he realised he was in the wrong lane and was too lazy to go back round the roundabout.

Now, I know this community is vast, and wide..... Ive found a drivers door in silver, but he doesnt have the rear. Has anyone seen or heard of anyone breaking/or a carlton in a scrappy thats silver? if need be, I'll get the door painted if its the wrong colour. Insurance have been informed due to the ill temper he had when we stopped... and the fact that he thought i was in the wrong when actually, I was right. (dash cams, i recommend them)

And yes, my old chod has been injured...... but she will live on!
