Those spaceship Civic suffer from bad rust around the top of the windscreens I think it was even a recall.

One of my pet hates is people calling Sierra Sapphires, Saffies or 75 Connoisseurs Connies. I really shouldn't irritate me but it does. See also any 4x4 being referred to as a JEEP.

They do suffer, but no-one has ever reported it's caused a leak though or got that bad. Maybe in another 5 to 10 years it'll be more of a problem.

Basically it's the rubber seal rubs into the paint. The fix is a bigger seal. Mostly seemed to affect the CTR - suspect because harder suspension caused more rubbing.

That looks horrific, good luck!

The relevance of this quote will soon become clear....

Usual story, browsing Gumtree  for spares or repairs and and repairs. Picture quality on the ad was special. These are the best ones.

It broke down on the guy (in Fife, naturally) when he tried to leave his Mums house and it didn't start. It was then recovered back to Dundee.

AA guy prodded and poked and diagnosed that the timing chain had slipped and that's why it wouldn't start.

Google was consulted, it turns out this is relatively common on these things with chains needing replaced on 100k This one is on 116K from memory,

It also appears that they can slip without valve piston interface.

This, my friends, is the gamble...

I shared this with the brain trust on Facebook and a helpful gentleman who we all know and love(The very same tickman above) volunteered to view it on my behalf.

He was duly dispatched and sent me some more pictures and an honest appraisal.

"Front left wing doesn't seem to fit right.

Back bumper on passenger side not fitting quite right.
Roof has stone chips on it that are quite large and rusting.
Brake pads appear fresh but discs are not."

I chewed this one over and sent a derisory offer which was declined.

I forgot about it and was arranging to view a Celica 190 to break for the engine for the MR2.
As I was arranging this CTR boy messaged me with a price which was exactly what I had in my head.

At this point it was looking like two 8000rpm Japanese hatchbacks were coming into my life...

Fortunately* someone beat me to the Celica. A deposit was dispatched on the Type R and John(Tickman) offered to tow me to his lockup where it can await its destiny.

So, tonight after work I headed north to sunny Dundee, met John and headed to pick it up.

As found.

Have fun doing the timing chain . Having done a couple in situ I’d be dropping the engine and box out together on the subframe . Can be a right twat getting the chain case unstuck

Words of encouragement please, words of encouragement.

Hondas can be a PITA for access on some things, cambelt/chains especially.

Rear bumper fitment shouldn't be hard to sort, it'll unbolt fairly easily and it'll just be a case of bending the iron/crash beam back straight.

Can't speak for the front panel gap though.

Values for EP CTRs are on their arse atm, it's time to buy.

So, I waited patiently* for news of my impending arrival today.

Shiply dude was running late but no big hassle.

And she's off!

As I was working I asked him to call me when he was half an hour away. This obviously failed to register as I got a call "I'm in your street" Ah, bother (or words to that effect. I got home to find this.

Noice

I had to go back to work after squaring him up, he told me to contact him direct in the future if I need anything shifted which was handy.

After work I gave it a quick wash so as not to offend the neighbours.

I then enlisted help of 3 mates to push it up our steep drive.

This will no doubt become a familiar sight...

I suppose I could just have a wee look?

Hello you...

post-7629-0-59571300-1525377633_thumb.jpg

I can't find the timing mark on the crank but pulled a plug out and had a go on finding TDC on No. 1. Note the extension poking out the plug hole.

A message to my mate (Honda Service Manager) confirmed that it has jumped 3 or 4 teeth.

To be honest, I'm too tired to begin to get my head round what's going on

What I can confirm is that it's turning over fine with decent compression.

All I can do is fit a new chain and see what happens?

I'm surprised you haven't fitted a winch in the back of the garage to pull up all the broken cars back to the top.

That was actually discussed tonight...

Found this image which kinda helps makes sense of the above pic.
