Tempted to get out the masking tape and the white aerosol rattlecans?

Interesting US advert and spec of it's time.

Unfortunately they completely missed the clean lines of the Cappa II.

I would love to be able to afford a Mk2 Capri, esp a 1.6 Pinto. There is a brown mk1 in Septic spec minus bumpers on egay atm for daft money, that appears to have a pinto in it, I think it is a 2.0.

My perfect spec Capri 2 would be a 1600L in dark green, with black vinyl roof, and tacky white Weller steels, and Dixie air horn, cream interior on it too

I WILL be getting a US market Capri after I’m done on this one! A US spec mk1 is what I’m after.

It won’t be instead of this one of course, it’ll be aswell as!

Posted this elsewhere on here a while back. Nice little runabout.

How much Capri can one person handle?

Felly is on the money!

I’ll complete the set eventually. Mk1,2 and 3! Then once that’s sorted I’ll continue to complete the entire range.

You are a very bad man!

I want that badly. I have the cash to buy it and get it here... and I like the colour too.

Just ordered a load more bits. With any luck the rebuild should start next weekend, assuming the first bits I need arrive in time.

On order are:

Sound deadening/heat reflective pads for interior are, floorpans etc.

Cavity wax. I’ve stuck to the Bilt Hamber products as it’s worked best for me in the past. 8 cans of Dynax S50 for the box sections and panel cavity’s (already got 2 cans here) and 2 cans of the clear UB wax for areas subjected to lots of potential wet/damp etc but that I want the body colour to show still.

These bits will get done first as access will be as good as it’ll ever get to put it all into the shell. The waxing job sucks arse but it’s got to be done, on a hot day ideally! Joy!

Some parts I’ve got ordered aswell for the follow on jobs from the above:

Heater matrix.

Heater resistor.

Heater box seals.

Heater hoses.

Bonnet release cable.

Throttle cable.

Clutch cable.

Speedo cable.

Tailgate gas rams.

Brake + clutch pedal bush kit.

Wiper mech seals.

Exterior door handle to body seals.

And since I like shiny shit:

Brand new old stock pair 1600 black with oblique wing shield badges as seen on the previous page here.

A pair of the correct door mirrors. These being rare as fuck and only used between Jan 74 and Nov 74. I’ve been after these for years and these ones (from a place in Germany) might or might not actually be available but if you don’t try you don’t get right!?

If I can’t get them I might opt for the very similar mirrors fitted to mk1 Capri’s which you can still get. Just have to see.

Next items to get are the brake line kit and sort the wiring looms.

Hhhmmm.

I'd be looking to run the brake lines - at least front / rear before I waxed it up.

A real horrid job after....

Your probably right actually. If I wax first it’ll be dripping on me as I’m fitting them won’t it!

The brake line kit isn’t listed for this model, so I’ll need to call them and see what they can do. I’ve still got all the old pipes as patterns just incase.

Just ordered the new brake line kit. Apparently they come cut to all the required sizes, ready flared and complete with fittings already on. All you have to do is bend them up to fit then fit them onto the car. Sounds easy...

I’ve got a pipe bending tool coming with it so I can make the bends look professional and neat and I’ve also ordered new brake fluid.

Normally I use normal Dot 4, but this time I’ve ordered some silicone Dot 5 fluid. I figured since the system is completely empty and new now I’d use this as there’s no cross contamination with old Dot 4 remnants left in the system.

Alleged benefits: lasts longer, doesn’t burn, doesn’t harm paint, doesn’t absorb moisture. It’s expensive though compared to Dot 4 but I suppose you won’t have to change it anywhere near as often.

Anyone got any thoughts on silicone fluid?

Does this mean your Capri is getting silicone implants?   :signs053:

She’s old now. Needs a bit of a lift to freshen up!

Cavity wax and sound deadening are here now. Heater matrix should be here tomorrow. Other bits following soon.

It’s looking good for the 74 only door mirrors too. Seemingly they’re not originals, but made in small batches to original spec! Fine by me, as long as they look the part and are decent quality.

You keep going down and licking it don't you? I can't imagine what the Ace of bASe Sierra would have been like if you had it, would have ended up as minty fresh as your Capri

I’d probably have ruined it tbh! The difference between BI’s Sierra and how this car was were that the Sierra wears it’s age and past well. It’s looking good but not over done and still shows it’s past if that makes sense. This car however was looking a right mess before. It’d been poorly painted which was embarrassing and the rust was getting to the point where something drastic needed doing. It looked ok in the ‘before’ pics but up close it really was a turd! Knowing now how bad the rust actually was it was becoming a bit of a liability too, if it was in a crash it wouldn’t have been pretty.

Your Capri sound a little bit like SS theres bits on my car that were only on for 6 months and you cant get earlier or later alternatives :(

Where are you getting all these bits? You havnt got a Portal to 74 have you? If so can I come next time? I might have to hang around for 12 months for my bits to come along mind.............................................

The earliest mk2’s were a bit of a hybrid really of mk1 and 2. It looks like a mk2 but there’s still a fair bit of old mk1 parts bin stuff that they used up on the early cars. That, and this one being a base model mean some of the things on it are quite specific. The wing shield badges for instance were deleted on the 75 on cars in favour of the ‘1.6 etc’ badges. L badges changed when the GL replaced the XL (76?).

The door mirrors I don’t get though!? They’re slightly different to mk1 items so must have required new tooling to make them then they decided less than a year in to ditch them. Why?

I suppose you don’t ‘have’ to go mad like I am, you could use anything good from any model or year and it’d still look the part and it wouldn’t let the overall job down but I just want things to be a bit more accurate. Don’t really know why?! It’s just me making things difficult again!

The bits come from literally everywhere and anywhere.

There’s a German company that I’ve used for all old Ford bits for years, they seem to have vast stocks of all sorts that nobody else has.

eBay, naturally comes in handy.

Some bits came from the US.

I bought lots of bits from scrapyards too quite some time ago when the cars were a bit more common. The grille I’ll be using actually came from a car that ended its days on the banger track.

Of course there’s the usual old Ford and Capri specialists too.

Sadly though I’m not in possession of a time machine otherwise you’d be welcome to come along! It’s on my to do list though!

By the way, if anyone’s wondering what mirrors I’m on about, these ones.

post-3771-0-28700400-1528838547_thumb.jpeg

Similar but not the same as mk1 mirrors.

It’s actually not that easy to even find pics of them. Most 74 cars are now wearing post 74 style mirrors instead for whatever reason or aftermarket ones.

Nice green one here wearing those mirrors. https://goo.gl/images/w5urWG

Guest Hooli

It looks bloody fantastic on your drive Dan.

I’ll pay your train fare down if you want to rebuild it for me!

Since I’m sat around at the min I’ve just done a google search for Ford VIN plate decoding. Very interesting if your a really sad sad bugger like me.
Tells you how here https://www.classicfordmag.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/ford-vin-plate-decoder.pdf

So using my VIN plate.

Type = BECP = Capri Coupe built in Great Britain
Version = L
Vehicle number (first letters are the important bit) = BBECPJ = Britain, Halewood, Capri, Coupe, and the final two letters are the month and year of build. PJ = May 1974. So that hand written doodle I found must have said May not March. It was faint to be fair!
Drive = 2 = RHD
Engine = LC = 1600
Gear = B = 4 speed manual
Axle = W = 3.778:1
Colour = 34 = 3 = Stardust Silver, 4 = 1974
Trim = A1 = Black Cloth

All checks out! So that black interior is almost definitely this cars original.

As to this, on cars I've found trim dates they are often from a few months before the car was made. I assume factories do a run of one colour & stockpile them to use as needed. So the doodle might have said march after all. My old XJ40 had trim dated three months before the car but with the model code for the model after mine!

Kunifer?

Came from here https://www.automec.co.uk so copper or copper nickel.

Most stuffs here now so hopefully I’ll be getting some work done this weekend.

I’ll need to dig out all the floor pan bungs and plugs. I’ve seen them somewhere. They’ll need a clean up, coat of paint and refitting before I can do the sound deadening. Brake lines can be bent up and go straight on too along with the servo and master cylinder.

Should I, paint the new pipes once they’re bent to shape etc. Or, give them a coat of clear lacquer to stop them going green/oxidised?

I think they’ll look good with the blue paint if I clear lacquer them. Should keep them in that nice copper-ish colour.

Heater box can now be stripped and rebuilt too. I’ve got new seals and matrix now so might do that in the evening after work some time. Once it’s clean and rebuilt that can just go straight back in the car then.

You trying for a 100 point- er?

Lacquering brake pipes? Have you no life.....

I'd major on keeping them straight, if you want it looking professional. Too easy to get little bends, kinks in them .

God I have gone a bit like that haven’t I!! I’ll be sat next to it in a field with a knotted hanky on my head and mirrors under it next!

Keeping them straight might take some doing, the new pipe sets come with their longest runs in coils.

I’ve got a bending tool for the bends.

How’s best to do them? Should I use the old ones to bend the new ones to shape on the bench then drag that under the car and fit it or run it under the car bending it as I go?

Shouldn't they be green paint anyway ?

I think so yes, there’s little/no paint on my old ones left.

But, my cars blue. You know the old saying... blue and green should never be seen. Would it look right? Or would lacquered copper look better?
