Moogs Motahs - sinking the seat

yikes - shouldn't you be wearing gloves when handling that toxic looking goop ? and what is it doing to the grease in the balljoints ? should look a treat once painted and bushed though, good work :)

have you priced up a new set of 8 alignment bolts yet ? ?

It's safe goop. I guess you don't want to work with it everyday without gloves.

Ball joints are going to be changed they are knackered - might as well do it properly once.

Alignment is a bit further down the road. Get it bushed and jointed then get it aligned . The bolts are a bit crispy so was going to get the mx5 specialist in Burnley to sort them out and set it to AVO specs.

funny you should say that, I'm taking mine in to ak automotive this week to get it set up - to AVO specs - it was them who set her up last time and they did a bloody good job :)

My paint arrived - bought from Amazon

9d10b8d3c4cf116916425d4117afb1cd.jpg

First coats on

Looks ok. I did the stupid thing of applying too much paint so it ran a bit.

Whilst that was drying I cut off the abs sensor bolt on the arm as I don't need it and wanted to be able to paint underneath

Grinder tickle

Northern monkey also lent me his BJ puller.

It's a meaty bit of kit

Made easy work of it
a3617c2eebb458f57a46eddf695fd464.jpg

Took the arms out, washed and let them dry. Then painted with two coats

I thought I was being clever and warmed the first arm on the BBQ which meant the paint bubbled a bit
5da903d8b7aa943105815748351f56d3.jpg

Makes it look like it has got scabies

Pushed all the bubbles out and gave it another paint layer

Left them drying

I need to source front and rear lower arms which don't seem to be that cheap at the moment. Half thinking of just sticking the car up on stands and taking the existing ones off to do.

Love island was on so I took myself to the garage.

Time to get Brazilian and remove the bushes

Northern monkey lent me his bush puller so after some testing this happened

I'm not sure how you are fixed tyres but I just happened across this very good price for track day rubber

xl is the one with the firmer side wall, designed for heavier cars but I have these on mine and find them to be brilliant on track (although comedy in pissing rain, like we had last night on the way to sainsburys, so much sideways)

Finished the upper arms yesterday

Gave them all another coat of paint
92748b98c794deaf004e2ceff58bbc48.jpgf52aad4e03acc2886a362c338f4579dc.jpg

And let them dry.

Gone from this

If I had the ability a sandblaster would have made short work of the rust and is probably a quicker way to clean up the arms.

My new* brake stopper arrived yesterday. Was cheapish on eBay so couldn't not get it.

I thought it was blue in the photo but reality is that it was quite manky

Wire wool plus Dremel reduces the rust
ef9ae3559ae0b310d5f6a8cf4e1e4570.jpg985d3bc6adff473c78eaa69da9fd1b88.jpg

Then couple of coats of chassis paint and looks good

Need to get some lower arms now and some grease for the poly bushes.

Good work, thats well worth knowing re the deox-c stuff - looks to have cleaned the rust right up on theose suspension arms. What do you do with the contents of the bath once you're done de-rusting the parts? Can it just go down the drain or does it need disposing of by a team of men in hazmat suits?

What is the brake stopper? What does it do? excuse my ignorance!

The black mix went down toilet. It is biodegradable and safe according to the bottle.

The MK1 mx5 bulkhead flexes under hard braking. The solution is to create a brace for the brake master cylinder. There are different options this one triangulates on to the chassis - it also means a front strut brace can be fitted as doesn't use the suspension mounts

They are normally north of £60 so this one at £20 was fairly bargainous.

neat bit of design that, I've seen these for sale but never figured out how they fit. should make a big difference to your brakes

I am not sure what that bolt hole is for, don't know if it is for other markets or abs or soemthing. Very tight fit, but I guess that is the point.

He is going to attempt to bodge a P38 filler neck into place. It’s still a Rover, innit?

The 205 has returned to base yesterday.

d3521e46c054c89b1f8eb02dbf1b3de1.jpg

In the brief time before the heavens open I fixed the few issues that I knew it had.

287bb713b1f7f6ca8d7999022435f7db.jpg

First up new indicators have been procured .

The side mounting point for the passenger headlight had snapped so the headlight was insecure. Funky non gingercators were the cheapest option for £18 delivered

d9b9753ebe2602f8372648937552bd8a.jpg

You can see the mounting point snappage
696c06efdfef5d734db93748a3f3477b.jpg

Someone had been in there before as connector had been replaced by spade connectors
4514290eed40f8f240d7aaf4a16d2399.jpg

After a bit of fiddling it is all back secure
259ad23de1dee10199ca3b38afce6b7c.jpg

A lack of tootage was dealt with next with a Mondeo horn donated by Mr Monkey - all tested then butt connectors applied

917a6aab162c037f0864c6e1e40848cb.jpg

To mount it, I used a bolt hole a bit further down. a659dc27c9b4e120b10e231e80c49dea.jpg

The indicators are a bit dicky - googlefu says it is often linked to the hazard switch.

bd67c36345c377186771aaabb2119488.jpg

Pulled the fascia off and cleaned it out
28352a75d0c5eda933ad27b33c72355b.jpg

That seems to have sorted that issue.

Whilst there I had a probe of the dodgy heater control. When I pulled off the front this fell out
e752740342a86b1522ee098e730976b5.jpg
I think it is the metal contact that sits behind the plastic wheel and completes the circuit
4b3cf946db1719cb0a70f809c954eb71.jpg3502a7cb66960cbc27c4d96af4be3ea6.jpg

Looking on eBay they are about £40 so once it has an MOT then I will change that out.

So as it stands with its new front face
d36c990b33932655400be55ace3997ab.jpg

Left to fit are front discs and pads plus book MOT.

Procrastination kicked in so rather doing my assignment the call of the 205 was heard.

The blower issue was on my mind. Taking the plastic dial off the front I could see where that metal bit fell off from.
029e1a01a1afddf4287491063eabd617.jpg

It is a copper spring which pushes on the metal element thus making blower work

b5e84e8d0141b22627493110c4e8c829.jpg

Cleaned up and a smear of Vaseline to hold the metal bit in place and reassembled.
3906be557a3fd018db2adff889395405.jpg

This worked we but I kept trying to optimise it
bb79c88b11881a39a5396ccbca21ce7d.jpg0698e7fc82cd1d0986652ab92e0d11c3.jpg

It seems to be happy now and blows merrily although sometimes it isn't quite on full power.

Next up was handbrake warning light. It didn't come on with handbrake so would fail MOT.

Start with easy job first - handbrake cover off and get the switch
49ae67056ae52076103d7036a1d3d8ef.jpg
cleaned up and tested and it seems fine

The issue was that the connector fitted under a metal cannopy I couldn't get at.

0d0b817b6484d5ec68516f271ef73d64.jpgf3601265ee734be1358efb0b5123e551.jpg

Macgyver time and some flex was used to extend the connector to the switch.
8f1b484fd2e63835af58251f9842a9b7.jpg

Then another piece of wire was used to fish it up and then crimped together
641381ca6c6a7b26a46e5f95fc669097.jpg

That didn't fix it so next was brake master cylinder switch . That worked fine so left one culprit - dash bulb.

What a battle as the steering wheel has to come off and binnacle out. 60bff20fe82e256fc6cc23bdf1a89408.jpg

Just for this bugger
77eae5c545bc1fa2cb87f92b354ee756.jpg

Swapped it with a known one and

048f4c7d01f726c5c139e03aece5c0f0.jpg

Current state of play
3fb94578a64d6dc045e328c4185c6417.jpg

I am going to swap them all before putting it back - but have no more bulbs - trip to Halfords tomorrow I think.

Putting my tools away I found a set of door locks I had bought for the pug.

Seeing as Bucketeer had spent quite a long time pretending to lock the car to throw off any burglars I thought I may as well fit them rather than watching the voice.

Interior door just pops off and get to the gubbins

Pull off the metal retaining lug and out pops the barrel

All back together

Both sides done so it is lockable now.

Also found the battery is loose so need to secure that for MOT man.
